Better team won, but i was sitting right there on the first goal from the corner. It wasn't a corner and Pokle can vouch.
Again the better team won, let me reiterate, the better team won. But the center had a bad day. Both ARs were good.

To me, the biggest controversy on the 2nd goal is that the foul call never should have been made in the first place...that was really, really soft. Several have pointed out that no one asked for ten yards, but my perception was that the referee was backing up the wall anyway, in which case the kick would have had to wait.... And it's a shame, because the second goal really killed the game in my opinion. I do want to point out that even though I think the referee messed up a little bit on the second goal, he did a great job of consulting with his linesman and doing everything in his power to try to get the call correct. It was after a couple minutes of deliberation before play was restarted, and it's good to see the referee crew use each other for help in such a big game. Now with all that being said, the better team clearly won this game. Ben Franklin was sloppy in possession, forcing passes into spaces that weren't there and dribbling excessively (sometimes straight into pressure), whereas NLC took advantage of their opportunities and created much better chances, even in periods when Franklin had the edge in possession. In the end, Franklin's possession resulted in almost no penetration the entire night, because they almost always gave the ball away at some point in their passing and NLC's defense remained disciplined. NLC was aggressive, intense, and motivated from the very beginning and deservedly took the momentum very early on. In the end you cannot deny that NLC thoroughly deserved to win this game. I wasn't blown away by the quality of this game. Again the better team won, let me reiterate, the better team won. But the center had a bad day. Both ARs were good. Can't agree with some of the other posts, but I do agree with the parts of these two posts above, as a neutral observer, and I want to reiterate the best team clearly and convincingly won. BF's only shots on goal were right to the keeper at medium speed, and NCS had all of the best scoring oportunities. (I actually thought the foul on BF before NCS's second goal should have been called a foul on NCS! Also, I thought Vanya's going down in the box was a good no call and NCS yellow card for stomping/kicking a down player (couldn't tell which) could have been a straight red. Even with a straight red NCS still holds on to win up 2-0. They were clearly and convincingly better.) Congratulations to both teams for getting there, and to NCS for winning its first championship. To me, this was a textbook case in favor of athleticism, speed, and finishing over "the beautiful game" I don't think this gives NLC enough credit. To me, this was a textbook case of executing a game plan. And NLC's game plan tonight was beautiful! Though NLC had as much if not more individual skill (at least tonight), the game definitely had frenetic pace, which meant not much beautiful possession - but at this point it's all about winning. NLC was first to almost every ball and very physical (maybe a bit too physical at times, esp when ahead 3-0 with no time left), applying pressure almost immediately. This was a huge factor tonight. Both lojic and I thought Ben Franklin looked to be the better team for the first 10 or 15. After the debatable corner (I only comment since others have: def no corner, could instantly tell (besides seeing it hit off NLC player) because NLC players immediately started jogging upfield when ball went out), the tide turned. And a few minutes later, the nicely executed, quick free kick turned out to be the death knell (only comment on that was the center was a little too close to wall for my liking to not be backing up wall as if ceremonial free kick, but definitely no wait-for-the-whistle signal was given). Missed calls or not, it just didn't matter. BF just didn't create enough chances to (IMO) to make it matter. And NLC missed at least one wide-open sitter). Of course, BF had an off game, but I think NLC forced that upon them. And as young, frustrated, talented players often do when behind, BF tried to dribble their way out. But with no space to work with and multiple defenders on some players at times, I think it played into NLC's defensive plan. Then again, I'm playing mind reader here. Maybe no plan at all except to win convincingly: check!

Is it true that all of the scores that were made by NLC were made by Freshman?

Congrats to NCS and BF on a great game. I think the goals for NCS were scored by 3 different freshman. NCS back line did a good job clearing. Replacing them will be key for NCS next year.

It was nice to meet you Pokle. As well as Lojic. It was a good time hanging out with M-unit all game.
on a side note: the future of NCS looks bright. Three freshman scored tonight for Northlake, Timmy Lopez had the first, Weston Acosta had the quick freekick, and Zack Shaw had the last one.

Wow, what great experience this brings to those young men. This kind of playoff experience as a freshman is priceless. Congrads to the NLC team on its first State Championship. Will keep an eye on them next season too.

I must have been within penalty kick distance from you all, sitting front row, about the 10 yardline. Sorry i missed you. It was a little boring watching the game with no one to swap comments with. Maybe tomorrow. Regards.
Perhaps I wasn't paying attention to personnel, but usually BF has a tall center striker who is opportunistic and reliable. I just couldn't remember seeing him in the game tonight. Perhaps he was marked out of position.
The single effort that brought me to my feet was the overlap run by the NLC tall defensive-mid in the first half, two 1-2s, dribble, through into the box, open shot, but driven, not passed, bombed high. That was a nice play.

NLC's game plan seemed to be simple. Guard Franklin's top two players, #7 and #10, take them out of the game, and let the chips fall where they may. NLC did that, physically making sure Franklin's play makers had limited touches. #24 from NLC was my player of the game for the way he fought to deny the ball to Popovich. His one error was shortly after NLC's second goal when #10 beat him. It looked like a foul in the box, but none was called. Other than that, #24 for NLC dominated the defensive third of the field.
Lots of pictures shortly to be uploaded, including the leadup to NLC's second goal.

(now, don't get too big of a head after this one, but thought he definitely stuck out among the crowd tonight) ... #24 from NLC was my player of the game for the way he fought to deny the ball to Popovich ... Other than that, #24 for NLC dominated the defensive third of the field. #24 played very well too. as did the center(?) back, #14(?). Lots of pictures shortly to be uploaded, including the leadup to NLC's second goal. Timaeus is like Kobayashi to me ("The Usual Suspects" fans will get my drift) - he's there somewhere pulling the strings, I just don't know who ;D Looking forward to pics.

Was that you holding the program to the side so I couln't identify you? Geez, I can take a hint..kinda like saying " see you soon..." response, " not if I see you first..." ;D Went to use facilities, got distracted with some friends, didn't return to original seat. Yep, left my h2o. Sorry I missed you all. Tomorrow might be less attractive game on fast field that might seem smaller, filled up with those two teams. My opinion, first goal wins.

Anyone know what the official attendance was? My guess is 1,000. Both Division III games today were well attended. Breaking 10,000 for the four games is still a possibility.
There were a few people who asked if I was Timaeus tonight. No posters, just readers. I'm not that hard to find.

You will always have FANS say the Refs are wrong. In this picture the BF player no doubt is fouling the NLC player. The Ref got it right once again. Great eye ref. Imagine that, he saw it in fast motion. I could not be a ref. in any sport because many times (almost always) when I am watching soccer, football, basketball etc.... I scream NO WAY REF and my son is quick to add "that was a foul mom, you don't know the sport so don't yell at the TV". Those guys get beat up many times when they shouldn't. From people like me that think they know soccer and they really don't. So from all of us Knuckle Heads out here Mr. Ref we are very sorry.
