Was at the ISLANO "match of the century" last night. Could not believe how much time elapsed every time the whistle blew. The game took around 2.5 hours to complete! I love me some soccer but last night I could see why some would absolutely hate to watch soccer. Every chance there was to waste time or delay a restart was taken.
Real Espana, the victorious side, was playing down 1-2 men for the majority of the match. In the second half (especially), every time an Espana player got touched they would go to the ground for minutes. Why not force every player that goes down to leave the pitch and reenter (I swear this is the law)? Maybe it just too long to sort out and I continually missed the player leaving and reentering.....
But this one really got me: Montagua has ball in its attacking third. Espana player goes down at top of his own box with cramp. Keeper, though play is still going on, leaves his line to go tend to his player. When Managua outside mid receives ball and looks up at open goal, referee blows play dead.
I thought refs were only supposed to stop play for serious injuries (eg, head, etc.). I realize that, even if "correct," it probably would have been much worse if the ref had let play go on and it resulted in a goal ...... though, again, I think that would have been the proper decision. Thoughts on this? Would it have been against the "spirit" of the laws if ref sees keeper (wrongfully) leave line to tend to non-serious injury and lets play continue?
I just felt like the ref was getting abused last night by tactical time wasting (or, better put, "time resting"). A team should not be rewarded for getting red carded and/or being out of shape by continually allowing this team to rest when a player cramps up. I know it's very difficult to decide if a player is faking or not, but I was getting peeved watching the game last night (for the first time in a long while).
