Some random thoughts about the tournament, in no particular order.
Dominican is very good. I saw them beat Byrd, 2-1, and it was a good game. Dominican had more shots, but Byrd played them tough. Mandeville is also very good. Probably just as good as Dominican.
Nice to have the tournament with three fields at one location. Two of the fields are smaller, but that is ok. Both teams have to play on it. Lakeshore Stadium is a nice facility.
I really am not a fan of the duel ref system. In order to be in the proper position to call offside and out of bounds, you are far removed from a lot of the action in the middle of the field. The refs here are doing a good job, but I still don't like the duel system.
Mt. Carmel is the best team I have seen here so far. Their ability to control the ball with their technical skill is something that just has to be seen. If they are not No. 1 in the polls, they should be.

I agree. After watching the Cubs play several times this year, I have not seen another team with comparable skills. Have seen raw talent and speed, just not the same finesse of the Mt. Carmel Cubs.

St. Louis Catholic 3 Vandebilt Catholic 2
Great game played between St. Louis and Vandebilt. St. Louis scored scored first and Vandebilt scored right after. St. Louis then scored a second goal in the first half and then Vandebilt quickly equalized with a great shot from 30 yards out to make the score 2-2 at half. St. Louis scored the winning goal with about 7 minutes left in the game.
Thank you to the organizers of the Mandeville Tournament to allow St. Louis, Vandebilt, Teurlings, and Lakeshore the opportunity to prove themselves against one another on the field.

Teurlings Catholic 1 Vandebilt Catholic 1
Very intense & well played game by both teams. TCH scores in the 1st half on a well executed finish. Vandebilt gets the equalizer with 3 minutes remaing in the game on a nice cross & header.
Teurlings Catholic enjoyed participating in this tournament. Great competition with the Top 4 ranked teams in Division II participating. Coach Sean Esker & the Mandeville / Lakeshore Parents are to be commended for hosting a great event. Well organized & the weather was fantastic.
Teurlings Catholic Tournament Results:
Teurlings Catholic 2 - Lakeshore High 1 Teurlings Catholic 1 - East Ascension 3 Teurlings Catholic 3 - St Josephs 2 Teurlings Catholic 1 - Vandebilt Catholic 1

Carmel style, but it begged me to ask the question, is it the technically advanced players (the top 10 are fully loaded with them) or a coaches insistance with a strong roster that possession be a high priority? In the matches I have been able to take in its the number one thing that puzzles me. I have seen many of the top club players during club season link up pass after pass after pass, through player after player in a build up for scoring oppurtunities, only to see the same players play kick and chase soccer during school year. Frankly it can be frustrating to watch. The team I was most impressed with was Byrd. Top to bottom they are not going to match up with some of the rosters they faced, but despite that they played a system of possession that kept them in every match. I do not know who the coach is, but well done. If they had a true finisher or two they would be something. It appeared to me that there is some soccer being taught up there. If anyone saw their game against Mandeville, their goalie play was outstanding. The goal that was conceded Hope Solo was not going to stop. An outstanding one man gang goal by a true striker for Mandeville. Otherwise Byrd's keeper was really brave, making commited save after commited save for her team. In that match she was the lady of the match, by far, IMO.

Xavi, I have to agree with you. Byrd impressed me also, but lacked a finisher. Will be following this team as the season goes on to see if they can solve that problem. The top teams also impressed me. Mt. Carmel, Dominican, Laffy, and St. Thomas More. But I do have a concern about the #1 team in the polls, Mt. Carmel. It seems that their game is not suited to a small pitch. Take a look:
Field: Mt. Carmel-2 Vandy-1, Mt. Carmel-1 Byrd-2 Stadium: Mt. Car.-3 St. Thomas More-1, Mt. Carmel-4 West Monroe-0
Also at the Dominican Tournament Mt. Carmel played Lafayette at Country Day fields which is smaller than Pan Am. Results 2-2 at the end of regulation. Mt. Carmel won in a shoot out. If Mt. Carmel has to travel to a smaller field during playoffs( I think they lost to SSA last year during the playoffs @ SSA), they have better learn to adapt to smaller fields or it will be a rocky road. Trust me, they have the talent no doubt about that, but they must learn to adapt to field size.
As for the other top teams:
Dominican- Great defense. Always seems to find great defenders every year, but needs to work on putting more balls in the net.
Laffy- Fast players and player with big legs. Can probably play with any team, but seem to lack focus at times.
St. Thomas More - Fast, aggressive and strong. I think this team is dealing with a similar problem as Mt. Carmel. On a small field they look great. On a large field it seem they have a problem adjusting.
Just my observation , still need to take in some more games. Maybe my opinion will change as we get further into the season.

Sorry, didn't mean to leave the others out. Did not get a chance to see Fontainebleau, Mandeville or Northshore play. Any thoughts from anyone on these teams?

Who's Up, Down?
Byrd - UP - A fantastic win against Mount Carmel. They may not have as much talent as some of the elite teams, but they showed that they have the heart and talent to beat anybody. They should definitely jump into the top 10.
Lafayette - UP - They won two and tied two. In my opinion, They should be the number one team. They have one loss on the year. They lost to Mount Carmel in a shootout. (They have also beaten Mount Carmel on a shootout).
Fountainebleau - ? - Can't figure them out. 4 ties.
East Ascension - DOWN - They played one DI team, and it wasn't even close.
Mount Carmel - DOWN - They had the chance to pull away from the pack. The loss to Byrd pulled them back into the pack.
St. Joseph's - DOWN - four losses to all non-D1 teams.
West Monroe - DOWN - Even though their three losses were to quality teams, they weren't close.
Dominican, Mandeville, STM - EVEN - These teams pretty much did as expected. They lost to teams ahead of them, and beat the teams behind them.
Refs - WAY DOWN! - I was not impressed with the refs at all. I'll just leave it at that.
I apologize for leaving anybody out. I could only watch so many games.

THANK YOU to all of the players, parents, coaches, and fans who participated in our 2011 Holiday Classic. It was a great 2 1/2 days of high school soccer with so many exciting matches to watch.
THANK YOU to the parent volunteers from Mandeville High School and Lakeshore High School who helped to make this event possible. A particular thanks to Julie Boudreaux of MHS who organized our parent volunteers.
THANK YOU to the referees who worked the tournament matches and kept everything (mostly) on time.
THANK YOU to our trainer from Mandeville HS, Michelle Harrell, who took care of everyone's needs throughout the tournament.
THANK YOU to coach Anthony Adams (Lakeshore) and my assistant coach, Colleen Johnson (Mandeville) for the hours spent helping make sure everything was in order.
And THANK YOU once more to the players who made the event possible by playing their best in every match. It was enjoyable to be able to watch so many of the state's high school soccer teams play. Good luck and good health to everyone as we enter the final month of the regular season!
We will look forward to seeing everyone for the 2012 event December 27-29, 2012.

could not agree any more about Elizabeth Manuel. It will be intresting to see the match this week with SSA. I doubt if coach Mikes team will concede an ounce in the midfield, so it will be imperitive that Mandys mid-field show up and fight to gain and more importantly retain possession. Their earlier loss to Fontainebleau was decided in the midfield, especially once Mandy decided the game was a dribbling superstar contest and abandoned any attempt to control possession by moving the ball through the formation. From what I have seen, any team in the top 10 could catch fire and make a real run, or conversely find themselves in a match that demands the style of play they are accustomed to playing, have to change and fold. As has been customary teams that emphasize possession with strong defensive and holding midfield play will emerge, while teams that are content to play only through balls on the way to double digit wins when matched up against inferior talented teams, rather than focusing on developing possessing mid-field play, with the time and space these matches often provide, will not have that card in the deck when they need it. This will be an interesting year, to be sure.

In response to Archangel, Dominican did not lose a game at the tournament, and won it with three wins and a tie. Maybe my post was a little confusing. When I had Dominican, Mandeville, and STM as EVEN, I was not saying they were even with each other. I was saying that they did not perform above or below what was expected. They all did what they were supposed to. Dominical was ranked higher than all the teams they played, and didn't lose. Assuming the 4 0 loss to MCA was a fluke, I agree that they are steadier than MCA. My top three, would be: 1. Lafayette 2. Dominican 3. Mount Carmel

Xavi and Garrincha!,
It is good to hear the Byrd girls getting credit for their heart. They have a couple of seniors that have heart to spare, especially a defender, Erin Bazzell and there was not a player in D1 soccer that works harder than our senior midfielder, Jamie Smith. That strong goalie play that you mention is coming from a sophomore, so, you will see her for a few more years. You are correct that Byrd was down a finisher as evidenced from Byrd having scored from set pieces. However, a starting junior striker that is a real sparkplug was temporarily out from an ankle sprain suffered in the West Monroe game. The Byrd team also had a starting defender that missed the tournament for personal reasons and another starting defender out with illness in the Mt. Carmel game. So, the team has real depth and had major contributions from some hard-playing sophomores in all areas of the field.
We have been to the Showcase for a few years now and I thought that this years teams were the best. Mt Carmel always strong but they are unreal this year. One post that suggested that they have a "problem" on small fields offers one perspective but I saw a team that can't be defended in space, so reducing space is the only chance for other teams. Dominican is right there with Mt. Carmel and you have to go with head-to-head to resolve that argument. Right now that goes to Mt Carmel but lets see what happens in the end of Jan. Mandeville and Lafayette are nipping at those teams heels and only the pitch can separate those teams. Rank them all as co-#1's and Byrd alone at #2.

archangel- I agree with you about Font. I heard a parent from Mandeville call them the Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde of the district... Can play with the best, but against teams thay should probably beat they tend to lack aggression and become complacent (only 3 seniors starting could be a factor). I saw a comment concerning the Mandeville game where Font. won and xavi hit the nail on the head mid field (Font,) controlled the game. Overall saw some good competition as a whole and I talked to one of the Lafayette coaches he made a great observation "between Byrd, Mandeville, Dominican, Mt. Carmel, Fontainebleau, Lafayette, and St.Thomas More any given day one can knock off the other". After getting the oportunity to see most play at this tournament (parts and pieces, but did not get to see Mt. Carmel) I must agree. SSA was not at this tournament, but have seen them once this year and are definately a front runner.
