D III in my humble opinion should go to either Newman or University. They have been strong all year and have beaten quality teams. Crazysoccerdad thanks for the shout out but if you look at it these 2 teams they have had incredible years. PJP played a tougher schedule this year and I'm looking forward to playoffs. Hopefully we can build off of last year and make some noise this year. Coach of the year should go to the winners of the championships.

Coach Lisa Levermann of C.E. Byrd, Shreveport
Obviously there are many good coaches who deserve this award in Division I.
Lisa has never dodged any of the competition statewide and is willing to play anyone, anytime for the sake of the game and player/team improvement. Geographic location is out of her control.
Won the St. Louis Showcase
Quality of Competition outside Div I Victories over Div II opponents #1 St. Louis 3-1 #3 Teurlings 1-0 #5 Neville 6-0 Victory over Div III, former Div II #7 ranked Loyola 4-0
Games against notable Div I opponents Win against #1 Mt Carmel 2-1 Win against a top 15 team West Monroe 3-0 Wins against a top 15 team Magnet twice in district 2-0 and 4-1 Tied #7 ranked Fontainebleau 3-3 Lost to #4 ranked Dominican 2-1 Lost to #6 ranked Mandeville 1-0
Undefeated in District 1 and overall record of 22-2-4 with one remaining game Monday against Neville.
Travels yearly to the Mandeville Classic and Arlington, Tx to face tough competition in Emily Hunter Showcase, finished 1-0-2 in "Division 6 like" compeitition in Arlington. I realize many discount those games as they are outside LA but it is tough, quality competition.
Defense only allows .39 goals per game
Obviously a deep run in the playoffs could help dramatically but she runs a good clean program with class at a non-private school and has back to back undefeated district championships.

I know what the thread subject says, but I feel a little to early because how season finishes up will be the deciding factor. All above mentioned have done a great job, but let the season finish and then let the polling begin!

We could repeat your quote about many of the threads posted on this site!! It'll all work out.

I nominate Cindy my nieces coach who guided her U10 team to a 12-0 record and had fruit drink boxes at the end of every game.

I know University lost 5 key seniors and Coach Melissa inserted two 8th graders (one at keeper) and she really thought we would be about .500 at the end of December. She is deserving but Div III is going to be tough. Think there are several worthy and whoever gets it should be proud and who doesn't should be OK with it. D III in my humble opinion should go to either Newman or University. They have been strong all year and have beaten quality teams. to all the above what I should have said was the end of the playoffs "could be" a deciding factor and maybe we should wait, but I stand corrected. That is what these boards are all about and seeing some comments might open some eyes up on coaches that might have been overlooked. mydove I am a big fan of Ortner, but believe me he is bless with talent on his team. What he does is get's the most at what he has, but please do not say this years team is lacking in talent. Traditionally Fontainebleau, SSA and Mandeville have this (talent) luxury. I see that changing with the addition of Lakeshore in the picture. I would like to see what is the ratio of young starters on Northshores team? Does anyone have this info. This coach (I do not know personally) maybe up for some type of recognition. Just a thought...

Northshore typically starts 2 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 2 Sophomores and 3 Freshmen. They are relatively young and I think coach Jeff Dunlap has done an outstanding job with the team. My daughter loves playing for him and I think he would be very deserving of consideration for coach of the year.

div1coach222- Please do not misinterpret what I said. I never said he was lacking in talent. These youngsters are the real deal, and like you said Coach Ortner has a way of getting the most out of his players. But, this is the very heart of the matter. He has the ability to take girls from all grades and mesh them together to make a very formidable team. This is what a truly great coach does. And really, although Lakeshore is a great up and coming school, I do not believe SSA will lose too many players to them. St. Scholastica and Coach Ortner himself are both big drawing cards.

Might think about Jim Jacobe from Airline High School. That program went 2-10 last year, I think? This year, 13-7-1 so far and earning a playoff berth. Don't know how long it's been for them. I'd say that's a pretty good program turn around.

mydove4, Unless there is a mis-print on this laprep message board, Coach Ortner was named "Coach Of The Year" after winning the championship in the 2008-2009 season. It is listed somewhere between pages 35 & 70, check it out.
He definitely has a case for coach of the year again this year as well.
I posted in the year or so all the "Coaches Of The Year" winners the last 8 years.
Since the 2002-2003 season, the coach of the winning team has won this award every time but twice. After the 2009-2010 season, Coach Esker (Mandeville) won the award and SSA won the Championship After the 2005-2006 season, Coach Curtis Stewart (Barbe) won the award and Lafayette won the Championship.
Like SSA, Lafayette also lost a lot of Seniors last year, 12 to be exact. This years team has NO SENIORS and consists mostly of players that played JV last year. In the 9 years Coach Katie Breaux has been at Lafayette they have made it to the Finals 3 times in consecutive years, losing to Mt. Carmel & Dominican and beating Barbe in 2005-2006. Of those 9 years there has only bee 1 year they did not make it to at least the Quarterfinals.
With 3 juniors and 8 sophmores in the starting lineup, this was suppose to be a rebuilding year. Not a bad coaching job. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way out she gets my vote.

Oh, Coach Breaux along with asst. Coach Levermann and Coach ? from Vandebilt, also coached the West Squad in the FIRST LHSAA All STAR game. If information of the girls were correct, the EAST squad had all but 4 girls moving on to college with soccer scholarship offers. The WEST squad had only 4 girls on their squad going to college with soccer scholarship offers. The WEST squad won that game. (Barbedad20 along with many others missed a golden opportunity with the bookies that day) The only win for the West Since its conception. When EVERY player HAS to get equal playing time, that was a tremendous feat. That's my case.

Coach Ortner of St. Scholastica has twice been recognized by the LHSSCA as "Coach of the Year". He received the Division II COY award in 2007 and the Division I COY Award in 2009.

mydove- I agree just like St.Paul and most southshore private schools you (SSA) will hold an advantage in "selecting " good talent over the public schools. That is the case in ALL sports not just girl's soccer. Lakeshore has and will continue to siphon some athletes away from Font. Just the facts, that is where the school district boundaries lay. I have a daughter who has played against SSA in the past and loved to play them. Why? Because she respects their coach and they(the athletes) are a reflection of him. You all play the game the way it is suppopsed to be played agressive, but also in good sportsmanship. Sometimes the two are lost when teams hit the field. Coach Ortner is a heck of a coach and as a few around the state also are, should be considered for coach of the year honors. Good luck to SSA except when they play??

The story behind the season.. Fontainebleau started the season 1-4-1 and I might add not playing good soccer. Center of the field from midfield to stopper position was being controlled by the opposition. Offensively team was trying to slug it out in the center of field even though their strength is speed on the outside. The season could have been lost if this continued. Instead of having a pitty party this coach thought out the box and made changes. She took a junior forward (has started at forward since a freshmen) and leading scorer put her at center mid. Next a junior midfielder and put her at stopper because of her unique skills. She now stressed the importance of going wide quickly because of their outside speed. These changes righted the ship and since then they have gone 11-2-4 with the only losses against SSA, with 2 wins against Mandeville and 1 against a very good Dominican team. Also by making these changes she was forced to bring up freshmen to play at the forward position which turned out to be a good thing because since then the team has lost their leading scorer (forward) to a concussion. I am sure there are many more stories like this behind the scenes thru out the state and we all would love to hear them before the decision (coach of the year) is made.

Coach of the year ought to be settled by results of the Division championships. This eliminates favoritism and any potential axes to be used in one's selection.

Patriot fan- so the only coach eligible has to be a Division Champion? Well if that be the case it should not be coach coach of the year award because in a sense all or not eligible come the end of the year. In fairness to this award I do see the problem with chosing one coach because of logistics. A criteria whether it be your suggestion or something to that nature might have to be put into place. I do see your point of view.
