Haynes 1, Op Cath 1
How many times have we seen a team dominate a game, have numerous chances, shots, yet fall behind? In this game, from the opening whistle, Haynes peppered the OC goal, penetrated, controlled mid-field yet were denied by a combination of mis-directed finishing, great goal keeping, and strategic jersey-tugging, arm-dragging, leg-tackling tough defense.
The Haynes keeper, Chase Morgan handled the ball (not saves... handled) exactly 5 times in the game, only twice in the first half. The OC keeper, Matt Howard, saved his team again and again with a combination of mobility, postioning and athletic save after save. He generate almost all the OC offense chances as well, by repeatedly punting to ball 60-65 yards.
Finally he added the first half icing to his birthday cake of a performance ... when after another gratuitous feet-up tackle in the box led to a Haynes PK, he guessed right and then executed a highight-reel stretched out save, the follow on just missing. 0-0 at half (25 min)
2nd half, again Haynes threatened over and over while the OC team hung on by hip checking, repeated hand-holding and jersey stretching manuvers. Suddenly the missed opportunities almost bit Haynes. Another booming OC punt bounced crazily then was headed over the defense... The Haynes keep came out sliding while an attempted chip passed well over the bar.. and was called for a late foul, PK for OC which was converted. 1-0 OC.
Haynes down 1, applied more pressure and OC defense responded with more excellent physical play... until with 2 min left, Haynes mid, Omar Oceguera fed stiker Dylan Scheuerich for a hard, quail-high shot that could have broken someone's hand.. Again the diving OC keeper deflected the ball high, where 5'8" Josh Gebo, Haynes striker, leaped above the bar and headed down into the box for the equalizer, just over a recovering OC keeper who made a valiant effort for another magnificant save. The last 2 min consisted of more desperated defense from OC... time, 1-1.
OC has had some good results this year, notibly a 3-3 tie with D-III #9 Parkview last week. They are well orgainzed, and well trained in the nuances of physical defensive play (no one will feel sorry for poor-wittle Haynes on this account, I'm sure LOL). And they essentially were playing a home game, Oppolusus being a short drive from the field. The ref crew did a competent job and "let the boys play" ... a lot!
OC has the ingrediants to have alot of success ... excellent keeping, athletic physical defense that will frustrate a lot of offensive minded teams, leading to counterattack possibilities. They remind me of St. Martin's in some respects.
Re: Haynes - I continue to be opptomistic with the ball movement, passing, and team play which is improving week by week. Finishing will get better as the season progresses. By seasons' end, Haynes may end up well regarded in the D-III rankings this year.

Not there today but this score is from sources I trust:
12/1/12 Copa Acadiana Tournament
Lutcher 0 Teurlings Catholic 2
- brief 2nd hand synopsis of the game: Tied 0/0 at half. At beginning of 2nd half Lutcher goalie cleared the ball and (I'm told) it hit a Lutcher defender in the chest. Ref. called a PK (handball call I'm assuming). Lutcher defender went so far as to lift his shirt to show the red circle left by the ball on his chest. But to no avail. Teurlings 2nd score came a little later on corner I think.
Very nice tourney over there. And really enjoyed Lafayette for the short while I was there. I'll post the 2:15 game results as soon as I hear them.
