You know, that guy just might be right about Lutcher. Anybody coming down to the Dawg Pound or playing against our team somewhere else, heck, I'd say just go ahead and just bring your JV or shoot, maybe even your Freshman team. That should be all you need. No need to tire out your varsity players.

Lutcher is a quality squad. They gave a strong St.Michael's a run for their money last year.
Of course as p-malinich states "it's a speculation at this point." All we can count on at this point is a lot of good soccer in the months ahead. Results will work out all the speculation until the Division Finals are complete.
Just wait til seedings come out in Feb. if you're not happy with preseason rankings. Invariable #7 will have beaten #3 and #18 will have beaten #16 twice. In the end there's only one #1 in each division. All others take a number and get in line!

Fiend you are right. Airline is an almost entirely senior team with players who have been around a long time. They've figured out how to score goals, the defense last year was stout and they've picked up a very strong mid-fielder who just moved to the area. Airline is certainly a team to watch this year, for district and arguably statewide. District 1 Division I Airline on paper is the team to beat heavily senior laden, they have never beaten Shreve to the best of my knowledge this is their best chance to end the drought... they gave Rummel a scare in the playoffs last year and most of their starters return plus some great transfers and foreign exchange players round out a deep squad. Magnet has the most developed program with good numbers in both JV and Varsity, Sr. Cameron Kadkodhai is a real threat if he can get good service. Shreve once again is talented but thin. Sr. Ken Chism is the key to the attack with Junior Andrew Doughty able to play anywhere he is needed. Its early and haven't got a feel for this years Gators, on paper I see Airline 1 with Magnet and Shreve battling for runner up. I stll think Shreve has the potential to be the most explosive on offense and somehow they always find a way to be in the hunt for district

how many players does jesuit return? st paul's graduated a large portion of last years team. sps should go undefeated in district but state is going to be a challenge.

I agree with fiend as well. Airline certainly 'should' be the frontrunner. Largely due to the new players they have picked up.
Magnet and Airline have more 'depth' than Shreve. But Shreve has some outstanding individual players.
Players with definite 'next level' potential.
Definitely going to be a battle. Either way, I don't see any one team dominating the district.
Without a doubt, a 3 team race.

No votes for McKinley? Doesn't surprise anyone?!

No votes for McKinley? Doesn't surprise anyone?! I think McKinley and Woodlawn will both need to prove on the field that they belong in this discussion. Both have quality squads, but negotiating Dist.5 won't be easy for either team. When you look at the depth of a Catholic or Dutchtown it's easy to see why they are included in the polls. McKinley and Woodlawn have solid starting 11, but the depth of the bench will impact them both if there are injuries, grade issues, etc. later in the season. At the end of the day it's all about results. Once games start being played and the numbers start adding up in the Standings & Scores spreadsheat, we'll see who belongs and who doesn't quite stack up. Division record being the first wildcard determination should help Dist 5 teams make the playoffs, but again depth and seeding could determine just how far these teams make it.

I see that St.Amant reieved votes... McKinley beat them twice. They also finished ahead of EA in their district. I definitely think that Saboe has some tricks up his sleeve for that McKinley squad. They took a huge blow with the loses of seniors. Especially with the loss of Billy Buchanan, but so did BR and St. Amant. But Catholic BR is the favorite in this district.

Airline has only picked up one player, Abdulla a very good ball handler, mid-fielder. The rest of the team has been at Airline for 4 years. 7 players have played competitive club ball with much success for 7 years now and have been in the game, summer, spring and fall for 12 years. They've not been coached by the traditional N. La coaches (Radi, Mark, Mike..) that have coached at the usual N. La high school powerhouses (shreve, byrd and magnet) so they're not really given their due. I guess we'll see if they earn it. I agree with fiend as well. Airline certainly 'should' be the frontrunner. Largely due to the new players they have picked up. Magnet and Airline have more 'depth' than Shreve. They took a huge blow with the loses of seniors. Especially with the loss of Billy Buchanan, but so did BR and St. Amant. But Catholic BR is the favorite in this district. I agree with some of what you're saying here. St.Amant was a middle of the district team last year from what I saw. They got a lot of credit for early out of district wins against some good teams. McKinley and Woodlawn both beat them last season, but again that is last season. Every team in the district lost folks to graduation. It's a matter of who fills the holes with incoming freshman and transfers and who's JV players are ready for the varsity level. BR will still be solid. They lost Bernhard, who argueably was their defense and offensive spark last year, but they return a great core team, including regional ODP midfielder, Roman Spicer. I'd expect a strong season out of BR this year and next. St.Amant lost a huge piece of their offense, but does still have Rantz Bourgeois, who can and will score goals. You can't go on last year's results for this year's team. It has to be based on who you lost and who is returning until we start playing games. Admittedly McKinley lost some strong seniors, those who remain will have to prove the voters wrong. Based on the new playoff criteria for wildcards, I can see five and maybe even six teams coming from Dist.5. Who they'll be is just about anybody's guess. All teams are capable, but depth and a little luck will go a long way this season for all. McKinley can find themselves in the polls, and likely will at some point this season. Just hope that it's the last poll and not the preseason one you're in!

Airlinedad, I don't want to be cruel, but without the exchange student, the transfer from Texas and a talented incoming freshman along with sophomore sensation Will Coyer, you guys would probably be looking at 3rd place.
I've seen these 'core seniors' you frequently mention play club ball....and well, I'll leave it at that.

Some thoughts from Lojics assistant:
Division I- Acadiana is too low. They should be the best of the non New Orleans schools. Should compete for a state title if they stay healthy and play as a team. Catholic Baton Rouge is also too low. THey are head and shoulders above the Capital CIty this year. As for overrated, New Iberia isn't going to be what they were in the past and may be able to hide that fact by being away from the Lafayette district and competing in the Bayou DIstrict instead. Rummel, Caddo Magnet, and Northshore should be a little higher along with St. Amant.
DIvision II- I heard the guy say on Coach Deritters radio show that the Top 7 of Div II are all in the title race. I agree with that. No real front runner this year like St Louis and Vandebilt of the past. I think we will have a lot of upsets and head to head games this year between the contenders. I would also look for those just outside of the state contender group to be able to play with all of them on any given day. THe closeness of the voting shows that many coaches agree with this as only 10 points seperate 2-6 teams. Copa Acadiana will be interesting as only Ben Franklin and Calvary are missing from the top 17 teams in Div II.
Division III- Its been quite a while since the days of DIvision III being the second best DIvision behind Div I. Over the past 4-5 years, schools like Teurlings, Ben FRanklin, and St. Louis have left the small school division behind and apparently many of the old powers have fallen a bit off of the map. WHat ever happened to Opelousas Catholic, once a mighty Division III power? ANyway, this division seems to be a big 2 and half plus everyone else when you talk to people who know. Lusher is so underrated in my opinion. I also heard Coach DeRItter and Beau CHene COach talking about this on the radio show, that with the talent on that Lusher team, they should be contenders for the next 2 seasons. OF course, Newman and NOrthlake are the big 2 this year. NOrthlake still has 2 years left from the fab freshmen that won state two years ago. Newman is probably the best coached team outside of Division I powers. SHould be an interesting race with teams like Catholic New Iberia and the 2 Baton ROUge powers also having a say in the playoffs. Episcopal BR is the most overlooked team in this poll. I would expect them to be in the top 4. UNiversity is always there in the end with great athletes, set pieces, and a top notch coach who gets the most of their talent. Country Day is the perfect example of a team getting respect on last year and not what they actually have this year. Maybe a borderline top 10 team based on the whole divisions lack of depth this year? Also, STA should not be around the top 10 this season according to my sources. ESA is a question mark. GReat forward and defender along with some role players. Can they put it all together in those 2 star players final season? LOyola is my team to watch on those just outside of the top 10. New coach and should be better than last year. COpa again has the majority of the ranked teams and should help give an early look at the teams. ONe question about COpa and DIvision III? Why doesn't Newman or LUsher play in it? Why isn't STA back this year? You would think with a tournament with everyone in the division playing in it, that the top teams would all be there? ANyway, I think a down year overall for DIvision III with many teams rebuilding.
Just one mans opinion!

Or Magnet for that matter. Don't assume a team is better just because of being senior laden. I'm not saying Airline won't be a serious contender. I'm just saying it will be due to depth along with some quality 'new' players.

Thanks for your opinion Hall. I'm thrilled you watched the players. You'll forgive my contrasting opinion, but I've watched and coached many of them... some for a dozen years and disagree. All the best. As I said, I'm not disputing Airline as a title contender. Or even possibly the frontrunner. but you act as if these players (and the team itself) has somehow been flying under the radar for years. That, somehow they've been 'overlooked'? It's natural for you to be proud of players that you know and love. (Especially if they happen to be your child.) I get that. Really. But let the kids play and then back up their performances with qualitative, objective information. Seriously, good luck and enjoy these boys senior years.
