Ref cut our league game five minutes short. Our team lost 2-1. He admitted mistake but said he had already blown the whistle. Not a big fan at the moment....

Ok- this is what I have. It's done. It stinks. In that five minutes, we could maybe have tied or won. We could also have lost by more. The ref knows he made a mistake and since I know he also plays, I am sure he understands how we feel. We will probably play this team again at state and then we will get a full game and we will see. Our team may also have a little fire in their belly when we face this team which never hurts. I was mad but now am moving on. We play tomorrow morning again. Thanks everybody.

Misapplication of the laws is protestable...

So our coach could protest the game because we were not given the full game? I don't know if he would want to, particularly if we would have to replay this fall but I will mention.

All I can say is it happens. During the game there were probably 2-4 other borderline decisions the official made that may or may not have had impact on the match just as much if not more. Both teams played 5 less minutes, meaning the the other team could have scored too. Could Goal differential make a difference? Sure--its a determining factor in some other flights.
My father (God rest his soul) once told me as we were riding home with me complaining about a referee call after a loss: "Dont ever put yourself in a position where a referee's call determines the game for you."
My friend Barrie Monks once told me as well: "If you always go to the field expecting poor refereeing, you will never be disappointed."
Words to live by.
Refs--no matter what, we cant play the games without them.

Coach Ray- you made my point. I absolutely don't know what would have happened. We could have tied it up or won. They could've scored three more goals. I don't know. I do know that our coach has different formations that he uses in the last few minutes if we need a goal. I believe he was getting ready to make that adjustment.
We will never know what would have happened. I understand that the ref had no ill will. He made a mistake. Our first half was 35 minutes but somehow during the five minute half or however long those are, he got confused and set his clock for 30 minutes instead.
I know we will see this team again. Who knows, in the grand scheme of things, he might have done us a favor. I think our team will approach the next game with a little more intensity. That intensity might make the difference in a game with much higher stakes.

If you need a goal, why does the coach wait until the last few minutes to make changes?

If you need a goal, why does the coach wait until the last few minutes to make changes? Why do you have to ask such hard questions?

Doesnt matter if he has blown the whistle. If a referee is made aware that he has not played full time, he brings the teams back out and plays the 5 minutes. This is a question (similar) on the state referee exam.

I don't fully understand the coach's strategies. I just look at how much the girls have improved. How my daughter's confidence level and play level have increased and have faith.
The ref said he couldn't restart the game. Was he wrong? Probably, but that's what he said. Maybe this will keep this from happening to another team. Our season is over til the spring either way. I was mostly just venting.

I was mostly just venting. Yes, he could have brought them back, but as you have stated a referee is also learning. I am not happy about it, but I was thrown out a game that tied 1-1 due to a pk called for a header back to the keeper as a handball a few years back. I argued about it, and was tossed, and rightfully so. However, the referee did check into it after the game (was at midnight madness), and came apologize that he was wrong. I also apoligized for getting so heated about it. Referees will make mistakes, only can ask that they seek to learn through these mistakes. My only message to the kids after the game was, "If you took care of business, the referee cannot affect the outcome. Therefore, we need to play better and get better." As a ref myself, I have made PLENTY misktakes, and still make them ;D

I had a coach tell me last week that a referee told him an attacking player cherry picking near your goal is not offside if all of you defenders are on the attacking half of the field. Unless I missed something or rules changed since I was refereeing, the only way to be onside and behind the next to last defender is if you are both on the defending team's attacking half.
Of course Offside rule is one that everyone seems to struggle with. At Mandeville this year I had to explain to a parent that an attacker cannot play the ball if they come from an offside position. Couldn't convince them that the onside line isn't reset by where the attacker plays the ball, but by where he was when the ball was played.
So parents, coaches, and referees are all still learning! I know I've made mistakes in all three of those roles!

On a positive note, I impressed the linesman by explaining why the ref didn't call an obvious trip because we maintained possession and had advantage. He said most parents and some coaches don't understand advantage. I have learned a lot from y'all and have realized most refs are doing it because they love the game. Most don't mind answering questions if asked in the right way and not during the game.
I'm ready to move on to school soccer now. Thanks!

Mom, referee class in Lafayette January 14, 16, 21, 23, 28! I think LSM would be an excellent candidate to take the referee course. She seems to be interested in be becoming more knowledgeable on the LOTG and is even willing to give a break to a referee that obviously made an error in the interpretation of those laws. That's a big plus right there. Even if she never actually referred a game I think the course would be very interesting to her, and it's always refreshing when a parent actually knows what they are talking about and not just being the one who can holler the loudest on the touchline. Think seriously about taking the course.

I'm going to ask a question that's gonna sound crazy but do you have to run in the class? I am thinking about it but haven't run in years. It's one of my goals to start again but right now walking fast is a challenge. Don't think I will be there by Jan....

It's one of my goals to start again but right now walking fast is a challenge. Don't think I will be there by Jan.... When I took the course there was no running, but we did some signal simulations. refereeing can maybe give you that motivation to get out there and start moving again. Running the lines on the younger ages or centering the U9/U10 games doesn't require a ton of foot speed.
