Best chance for Loyola just passed them by... They had about two or three shots on a nearly open goal until one finally hit the crossbar and ASH secures it

Congratulations to Sacred Heart as they played a great game tonight. We were outplayed but I was very proud of girls for never quitting. Our seniors should be very proud of what they have built and we will certainly be back next season. I will make a few comments about the game that I feel are relevant and honest.
First, we are very young and nerves played a role in our lack of possession to start the game. We played frantic, rushed, and made many uncharacteristic turnovers we wouldn't normally make...part of that was due to the pressure Sacred Heart put us under. I thought the officiating was poor from the center ref and this ultimately led to the 3rd goal, however did not change the outcome of the game. One thing that is very interesting is in the finals you naturally have a crew that is of supposed higher quality than throughout the season. These crews typically call much less and let the players play. If this was last weeks semifinal, there would have been 20+ free kicks in the game. There were several advantage type decisions made within a teams defending third where there is no advantage.
It was very unfortunate for us to lose one our starting center mids to an ACL tear in the semifinal and that affected our comfort level in the middle last week and tonight. However I was very proud of my freshman mid who stepped up and worked very hard to fill that role for us. I give credit to coach Badie for a good game plan and it was very obvious they were keying on Bailey and were not going to make it easy for her to face the goal. After they scored their first goal, ASH went to 5 mids and played with the lone striker, who I must say doesn't need much help up there. She was the difference in the game and rightfully so was the MVP. Being down 1-0 tactically we needed to start pressing some more numbers forward to look for an equalizer and we came closenanfew times. It ultimately hurt us in transition defensively but I will never play to lose 1-0!
I couldn't be prouder of the last 10-15 minutes down 3-0 my girls pressured and worked hard to the end never putting their heads down. This was a great learning experience for our girls and we will come back better and stronger. Thanks to all the great Flyer fans and parents for a wonderful game atmosphere. We have had tremendous fan support throughout the playoffs and our student section was awesome tonight. 3 road trips of over 4+ hours as the #1 seed shouldn't happen but those were the best moments of the season. I feel very blessed to have shared this journey with these girls and they should be very proud. Be warned D2, as we were leaving the locker room after the game, the goal was set to be in that locker room next season!
Again Congrats to Sacred Heart on a great win and to my girls for a fantastic season.
Coach Mark Matlock

Awesome performance by Sarah Martin. First goal was a perfect give & go in the box, then effortless touch to slip it past the keeper (nice assist whoever that was). Second goal was classic - all alone against 3 quality defenders plus keeper and she weaved through them all at full speed like they were standing still. Third goal showed her versatility - beautiful strike from 25 yards out into the upper corner. She looked like Alex Morgan out there. Loyola has nothing to hang their heads about; Sarah is the best forward in the state (best ever?) & nobody can contain her when she decides it's go time.
Surrounded by speed on both wings, excellent ball control in the middle, a stellar defense, and top coach, it's no wonder Sacred Heart keeps bringing home the big trophy.
Congrats to Sacred Heart on the victory and also to Loyola for a great season - both Loyola and Byrd did North Louisiana proud this year.

The Sarah Martin show...what a talent; I would pay many times over the $10 entry fee to watch players like that.

Nice post Mark. I was at the game tonight and proud to pull for your Flyers. Sacred Heart was just a better team tonight. I thought it was really cool about how many Loyola fans and students showed up. What great support. By looking at the roster, Loyola has some great years ahead. Congrats to Sacred Heart, You deserved the win tonight. Great defense and speedy offense. The Martin girl was very good and she had great support from her teammates. I'm looking forward to the Jesuit / St. Paul's game tomorrow night.

Congratulations to both teams on having great seasons. As to the game itself, well, it was a breather for the Cardinals after the Newman and University games which were very tense matches. It was apparent very early on that Sacred Heart was the superior team and that Loyola would have a very difficult time scoring (their only real shot on goal was at the end of the game trailing 2-0 and it hit the cross bar). To be fair, ASH also had a shot hit the crossbar and Loyola's keeper made several outstanding saves on Sarah Martin in one on one situations. As one commenter noted, the score could have been much worse.
I do give a great deal of credit to Coach Matlock, who didn't coach to keep it close but pushed numbers forward to equalize knowing that it would weaken an overmatched (my opinion, not his) defense. I was also very impressed by the intensity of his team even down by three late. His girls gave it their all through the final whistle, and that's all a coach and his teams parents can ask for. They simply lost to a superior team. Not bigger (as always, ASH was the physically smaller team) but faster and more technically skilled.
Special congratulations to ASH for being the FIRST team in La. to win four straight championships in any sport (if St Louis wins today, they can claim the first BOYS team to win four straight). Such an accomplishment starts at the top with Coach Badie, himself a former high school soccer star. Those of us with teen age daughters know how difficult it is at this point in their lives for them to stay focused amidst so many distractions (Sweet Sixteen, graduation, college tours, etc) but Coach Badie always had the girls ready to play, game after game. But as any coach will tell you, players win championships. ASH simply had the best players. From the best defense to the best midfield to the best striker of this generation (Sarah Martin scored her 50th, 51st, and 52nd goals last night in only 23 games) to the quality players on the bench that gave ASH unrivaled depth, this was truly a team for the ages. Congrats to the seniors for a phenomenal run!
Good luck to the seniors on both squads as you go on to college and the next phase of your lives!
