In tournament today, ref was constantly talking to the girls.... not just the typical keep your hands down etc but telling them good job, good tackle, and stuff like that.
It didn't really bother me except it was just way different from what I have seen.

WHAT? Positive comments instead of and negativity and berating? How dare someone be positive at soccer match! Please get me a name and I'll be sure to address it! And by that, I mean to compliment the referee.

It was actually more like coaching and giving instructions in some instances. It was just something I haven't experienced. Not necessarily bad....

If the same ref I have in mind, he typically encourages good clean soccer (no fouls) and manages the game exceptionally well. Yes, talkative but never a problem from my standpoint.

Strange... but when I reffed my first girls game (it was a U-16 or so game) 20 years ago after a number of years reffing at various levels, always men or boys, I found myself doing the same thing... and didn't even know I was doing it until someone told me.
I quickly eliminated that habit and the habit of saying too much, which means saying anything unnecessary. But still don't know why I was doing that in girls games and not men or youth.

He did fine calling the game. It was just different than anything I have ever experienced. I wonder if he does it with boys too.

In HS games as CR I make an effort to recognize players for their sportsmanship and clean play in tough situations. At the younger club ages gentle on-the-field guidance so the players have an understanding of the laws of the game is my contribution to player development.
Just think, if refs got the players on their "side", players might tell their parents to back-off the remarks from the sidelines!
