Is this how you calculate the power rankings?
5 + (# of opponents wins x 1) points for a win 0 + (# of opponents wins x .5) points for a loss 2.5 + (# of opponents wins x .75) points for a tie

Keep in mind that it is based on # of wins at END of season so your rating can change even without playing a game based on your opponent's future results. It is not based on what they had when you actually play them. Then your results from all of your games are averaged. Those things in mind, note that you can earn more points by losing to a 12-win team (6 points) than you can by beating a 0-win team (5 points). Seedings will be based on Power Ratings (with all district winners getting an auto qualify into playoffs).

When you say averaged do mean the total points are divided by the total number of games played ?

Doesn't seem fair that team A loses to SSA by one goal, and team B loses to SSA by 7 goals, and they both get the same number of points.
Maybe for a loss, instead of .5 x number of wins, it could be .6 - .1 for every goal lost by. So if you lose by 1, you get .5 x number of wins, if you lose by 2 you get .4 x number of wins etc. Lose by 6 or more and you get 0.
Something similar could be done for the winning formula, also.

This is definitely not a magic formula that will perfectly place everyone (but the coach's seeding wasn't either). In the end, I think, it's really to give some relative assessment to all teams (and in an easy-to-understand and/or calculate approach). As long as their in a reasonable range of where they belong, they have a fair shot at the game and from there, it's left to the play on the field to determine. I don't know as much on the girls side so I'll use the boys from last year as an example. Division III: #5 seed Lusher Charter = State Champion Division II: #8 seed Franklin = State Champion Division I: #8 seed Grace King = State Finalist Did the coach's voting system get it wrong? A few spots here & there probably. But was it reasonable & did it give the teams the opportunity to perform? Yes. I'm guessing that this new system will do the same (and eliminate even unintended bias). Now back to your specific comment of how many goals you lose to SSA by. I think that will take care of itself. The average will cause the rating to be spread over 15-20 games (reducing the impact of each). And SSA won't want to play many games against teams that they can beat by 7 goals because those teams probably don't have many wins & will actually cause SSA's rating to DROP. The only other concern I would have about using GD in strength is that it would unintentionally encourage scores to be run up and do it every game. Will some tweaks happen in the future? Maybe. But I've personally run about 7-9 different methodologies using 2012-13 scores & in the end they are about 90% the same - always a few outliers who change from methodology to methodology (and probably also from year to year).
