The following is a proposal for a playoff system for boy’s and girl’s soccer.
In short, by playing a tough schedule, you have the best chance to make the playoffs in the Premiere Division which gives you two opportunities at a state title. In short, if you lose your first round match in the Premiere Division, you are not out of the playoffs, merely bumped down to Division II. As such, the teams that make up the opponents for the relegated teams from the Premiere Division will be the 5th and 6th placed conference squads (shown below). Divisions III will field 32 teams using the same geographic format as the other divisions. Division IV will only have 16 schools and will be determined solely by statewide power ratings. A school may opt out for travel considerations by not applying to the playoffs via LHSAA. Your thoughts?
Playoff format –Premiere Division
(the top 4 from each conference based on power ratings)
Round 1…Region’s conference champs versus opposite conference’s 4th place team. The conference runners up would play the 3rd place teams from the opposite conference (1v2, 3v4 etc. to lower travel costs for respective schools). The home team is determined by conference finish.
Round 2… winners face off within the same region. Home teams would be based on the current LHSAA travel rule. The losers would drop down to the Division II playoffs to be a road team against the 5 and 6 seeds respectively.
Round 3 – Power ratings will seed the remaining teams.
Playoff format – Division II
(schools ranked 5th or 6th would face off against the relegated schools from round one of the Premiere Division). After that, advancement would be as noted per the LHSAA travel rule.
Playoff format – Division III
Similar to the Premiere Division but with teams ranked 7-10 and no relegation
Note – If a conference cannot field 4 squads, the highest rated 11th place team from the aligned conference will take its place (see the Monroe area)
Playoff format – Division IV
Entry based on the 16 schools with the highest power rating not finishing in the top 10 of their respective conferences. Pairings will be based solely on power ratings.
