These honors (like many honors) factor in a whole bunch of variables including being a strong player on a strong team that does something impressive at the right time and is seen by the right people. To help keep it all in perspective, here's the Freshman list for this year's Seniors. Many names are ones we're still hearing this year while others seemed to have disappeared. Just thought it might be worth a reflection moment or two. For immediate press release: LHSSCA 2011-12 All-Freshman Team First TeamSalvador Collin (Acadiana) Jonathan Turrubiartes (Alexandria) Gaven Stelly (Beau Chene) Cristian Cannales (Brother Martin) Chad Usry (Captain Shreve) Josh Campbell (Catholic BR) Sharif Sharif (East Jefferson) Joshua Dakin (Episcopal Acadiana) Kyle Farmer (Lafayette) Ashton Fletcher (St. Michael's) Alex Silva (St. Michael's) Mitchell Williams (St. Michael's) Eric Guin (St. Paul's) Mason Arnette (Vandebilt) Adam Farrar (Vandebilt) GK- David Terrel (Newman) Second TeamFrancisco Rodriguez (Baton Rouge) Grant Odenwald (Baton Rouge) Allen Frost (E.D. White) James Viguerie (E.D. White) Jose Zuniga (Morgan City) Julian Sutton (Newman) Indiana Brunner (Northlake Christian) Trace Knoerr (Northlake Christian) Matt Pearl (Northlake Christian) Niven Brown (Opelousas) Demetrius McAtee (Parkway) Zachary Breaux (Vandebilt) Landon Vidrine (Westminster) GK- Coy Amoto (Lutcher) Funny how Niven brown ended up at BC with Gaven Stelly after moving to a new home after his freshman year. Both were only teo seniors for BC besides Juan Carlos Pilicita Brito, who should be d2 candidate for mvp with 55 goals and 22 assists. But for freshmen team, no doubt that john morgan Eaglin is a first team player for BC and also Landon Guidry. Both started all year after the injuries occurred to the 2 forwards. John morgan started at defender for first part of year, played some wing and also started at forward for last month of season and did great. Landon Guidry started at left wing despite being a forward in club. He is a small but very fast player and did a great job as he was expected to be a sub this year but stepped up in mid December and became a starter due to the injuries.

Clayton Gill for Northlake Christian has scored 19 goals and is second on the team with points. He has been a major part of the teams success this year

E.D. White had 3 freshman starters who were major contributors; #15 Colin Toups, #19 Jordan Servat, and #21 Ayden Duvernay. A couple of 8th graders also saw action with the varsity; #5 Ben Foret and #16 Miles Loker.

E.D. White had 2 players on this list. James Viguerie (#4) was a four year starter who led the team this season in goals (11) and assists (8). Allen Frost (#8) was the other. He was taken down from behind early in his junior year fracturing both bones in his lower leg. He played sparingly in his senior season while still suffering effects of his terrible injury. After being in a wheel chair for 6 weeks and a having permanent rod placed in his leg, being able to get back on the field this season was a major accomplishment.

I'd second the Hector Rodriguez , St. Amant, nomination. Solid defensive player. Great in the air and at connecting with his midfield.
Edin Rodriguez, Woodlwan BR, FB, should be considered as well. Solid defender who had a keen understanding of when to get into the attack. Second leading scorer on the team and solid defender.

Jude Burst - Ben Franklin - stared every game for Franklin as a CM Two starting freshman in a State Final. Enough said Jude Burst easily has the best foot work that I have EVER seen. There was a time that I watched him keep the ball at his feet with 6 opponents within 4 feet of him while he was on the penalty spot... FOR 30 SECONDS!! I wish i had the video. Anyone who has spent significant time around him while he was playing would attest to this.

Ross Thompson #18 from Dunham. Started every game in arguably the most competitive Div III district. Moved from LW to back line 4 games into season to shore Dunham's defense where he was typically placed in front of opposing team's stud. Speedy, tenacious, intense competitor!

I wouldn't go so far as declaring ODP kids as All-State Freshmen. How many of them were starters and contributed to the success of their team, not just making the team. And we all know that not all quality players go out for ODP. Just saying.. Since ODP is now by invitation and is a closed try out I'm sure the "quality" of played has improved over the days of open tryouts.
In the case of Eli Weathers, he was a full-time starter for Catholic High which was consistently ranked among Division's I top 10 teams, was District 5's undefeated champion (10-0-2) and advanced to the regional round. His versatility showed in playing a variety of positions ranging from right back to right wing to holding mid.

The closed tryout process still does not ensure that the best players are participating in ODP. My point was that just because you link a couple lists and show a couple names, consideration isnt justified. In Eli's case, I would agree that he should be considered for the All-State Freshman team based on those accomplishments. Being a starting freshman at Catholic is impressive considering the level and quantity of talent they have. Good luck to him in his upcoming club season. And I hope I get the chance to see him play next high school season as well.

Hector Rodriguez at St Amant is absolutely a necessity for this list. Dude was a beast at sweeper.
I am also a fan of Brendan David at St Amant. Started at GK for the Gators all year and was very instrumental to their success. Played pretty much every minute of every game--both Varsity and JV.
Im glad we had a few younger names dropped in the mix, as I was curious as to what people thought of sub 9th graders being considered. I am very much in favor of it, as these guys have the same things to accomplish at any upperclassman.
With that in mind, I'll add in two names from Ascension Christian for consideration--Logan St Pierre (8th) and Bohdi Linton (7th). Both started and played virtually every minute for the Lions as central midfielders and Forwards. The two combined for 11 goals and 10 assists, and were the backbone of a team that lost its best player (Ian Carter) midway through the season. Not a small task when you consider they were playing in the toughest DIII district in the state. These two guys werent just "get on the field" or "get some minutes" guys--these two had to carry a first year startup program against a schedule that included Denham Springs, University (x2), St Charles (x2), Riverside (x2), Parkview (x2) and Lutcher. They adapted early and well and held their own despite being significantly smaller than all their opponents, and helped the team improve dramatically towards the end of the season. They both had to play hurt, play sick, and play the whole game as they were most of what we had. Big responsibilities for very very young players--certainly worth consideration regardless of the lack of overall success of the team.
Interesting side note: Brendan David and Logan St Pierre used to be club teammates with GSC Thunder back a few years ago.

This is just for freshman. Not junior high kids (7th/8th graders) on varsity. So they can only be on team one time. As yiu may notice, there was this mistake made that year with Vandebilt listed above (I think Arnette was the only real freshman of the three and Breaux and Farrar were 8th graders). So when when we caught the mistake and miscommunication afterward, we didn't allow them to be named again as freshmen the following year, and then made rule, that it had to be 9th grader. So just know if the kid is good enough as a junior high player on varsity, he will be a shoe in as a real freshman.
also... This is a high school award and not a club soccer award. We realize some great club players out there won't get this honor cause they may play for a powerhouse where they are on JV and not a varsity contributor. It happens. They will get theirs when they are on varsity. Sorry but those are basically the rules for this team in a nutshell.

Will Adcock from Captain Shreve. Started every game. Initially played centerback and later moved to left back. Reads the game very well. Strong tackler.
Good footballing brain. Definitely plays above his age. Meaning he's composed and patient when he needs to be. Aggressive in the challenge when needed. Above average technical ability for his role as well.
If he works hard I can see him playing at the next level.

Price Petagna from Country Day was his District's MVP this year. I understand that it is difficult to reward a player due to his team having a down year since they don't get the publicity, but when Country Day had a much stronger team last year Price had more minutes than anyone else on the team for varsity as an 8th grader and he scored some very important goals.
