Was just there as a soccer fan with no ties to either school. For a state championship game, there was all of the drama, thrills and emotions you could dream of. Truly impressed with all of the effort and talent from both teams and congratulate Mt. Carmel on a thrilling win. I did feel the refs were letting a little too much go on both sides for awhile and felt it was getting out of hand.
But, I did want to also recognize #7 from Byrd, I truly felt for her. With how hard she fell and hit the concrete, I never would imagined she would have come back in. But her effort and performance after coming back was just insane. I don't believe I have ever seen such an impressive individual performance and desire to do everything one person can do.

Having seen and played against both teams I congratulate both for great seasons. Someone had to 'win' and MCA did I had skin in the semis and the finals. Congratulations to both teams for superior effort, parental support and both coaches for their efforts. I will be cancelling my Times Pic subscription after 30 years for TOTAL failure to cover HS scoccer this past year. Hope many others consider.

m.ksla.com/ksla/db/351046/gallery/VtQ3rv4uThank you for recognizing Hope's passion. After spending the night in the hospital, I would suggest lhsaa do something about the concrete. We are fortunate that nothing serious but a deep cut happened, however it could have been bad. We also had a concussion with the direct hit to a head. Why doesn't the ref stop the match for safety? Watch and decide if lhsaa should do something with the concrete

In conclusion... Congrats MCA! Team gut checked after the 12-15 min mark of the first half Sat night when it appeared that Byrd was about to run them out of the building. Secondly, props to #7 for Byrd who clearly had a senior moment and out hearted and out hustled all on the Byrd side at least for one night. No offense to #10 or the others. Thirdly, the Tad is a bit antiquated, and if they decide to keep playing the championships there, LHSAA needs to help tighten up the joint or relocate. Fourthly (if that is a word), the New Orleans local media was incredibly weak this year in all phases covering both the boys and girls soccer, especially Times Pic (spot on G1). Maybe they can take some lessons from the Shreveport Times and ole Luke. They did a fantastic job covering all of their teams, not just Byrd.
Lastly, these are the playoffs, the games are close. Kids are giving 110+% out there and grinding everything they have leaving it all on the field. Let's let them decide the outcome, not some quick whistle that doesn't recognize the stage of the game that is being played. Unless it's 100% obvious that the lack of the whistle will change the outcome of the game, don't blow it.

This is a nonsense phrase that should probably be retired and in this case it's a little offensive to Byrd. To suggest somehow they didn't want it enough is absurd for anyone who saw their reactions after the final whistle, and I feel confident Mt. Carmel's coach would agree. He graciously spoke with me after the match and made sure to praise his team's work ethic while also making it clear he wasn't suggesting Byrd didn't work just as hard. They wouldn't have been in the state title game if they hadn't. The Cubs absolutely earned their win, but it's still fair to say they were somewhat fortunate and it could have easily ended differently. Sorry I meant no offense to Byrd. A poor choice of words on my part. It was a great game as I stated above. Great seasons by both teams. Just curious how do you think they were fortunate and could have ended differently? Simply a reference to the fact that both teams barely missed several other great chances to score, thanks to some great saves, posts and in Byrd's case even missing what was essentially an open net in the second half. Mt. Carmel finished more opportunities and full credit to them.

Unless it's 100% obvious that the lack of the whistle will change the outcome of the game, don't blow it. Thanks. I appreciate that. Just last week, I had someone tell me he was disappointed we're covering soccer more than basketball now, which is hilariously inaccurate, but it's nice to know even non-soccer fans are seeing the coverage. Hopefully some of them will like it, and it's important to note that in today's media climate I would not be allowed to write so much about soccer if people weren't reading it online, so thanks for your support and anything you've done to share my work. In a couple weeks, I'll be unveiling my All-Metro teams, which for the first time in a while (as I understand it) will not be chosen by the coaches. Hopefully that will eliminate some of the politicking that I know has upset some coaches in the past, and I'm also planning to show the teams I chose to some of my referee friends to ensure there are no egregious selections or snubs.
