A little diversion from all the socres and polls talk...
Which line up would you most like to start with if you did not know the strengths or weaknesses of your opponent in advance?
Everyone plays with a different formation, but I'm just curious to see if there is one or a few that are the most common. Just post you reason and when you would make exceptions.

Thats going to be tough to answer for anyone. The most common albeit is probabaly 4-4-2. Now I no many people have differnt opinions on how to play and the advantages and disadvantages to each but thier is no best. Personally I would run a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 any chance I got. Simply because if 3 defenders work well enough why use 4. I realize 4 defenders allows you to cover all 3 of the lateral 3rds of the field without being streched out but having 3 back makes for better posession and a stronger midfield and mainly stronger attack. Thats the way i like my soccer. Like a chess game. One team trying to get the other out of posistion then capitalize. I absolutly hate long ball. Not direct soccer; just longball.
Basically its all down to your personel and I'm pretty sure that i won't be the only one to say that.

When I coach, I start with 3-5-2 (see my handle name  ). I like it because you can adjust between offensive/defensive positions without changing formation. All you have to is to tell the defensive mid (two in the middle) to move up or down. When they move down, it's more like 5-3-2, a very defensive formation. With 3-5-2, we need two things: a center fullback with speed and a very good center mid. With this, we are trying to dominate the midfield. Another advantage (though irrelevant here): It's much easier for younger kids to remember their positions. It can be easily drawn on paper. Disadvantages: When the opponent attacks along the side line, three backs are spread out. Also, wingbacks get tired easily so that you need subs in that position. |
