When E.D. White Catholic High School’s boys’ soccer team reached the No. 1 ranking in Division III for the first time in mid-December, coach Mary Cavell said she was excited, as one would expect.
Cavell, who has shepherded the boys’ soccer program for seven years of its nine-year existence, was also quick to remind her team that being on top at midseason is not the same thing as being No. 1 at the end of the season – a lesson she has learned as E.D. White’s volleyball coach.
“It was a big accomplishment for our program,” said Cavell of the ranking. “But as far the No. 1 ranking goes you have to prove it on the field. We’ve been ranked No. 1 in volleyball many times but never won a title.
“So I told them you really have to stay focused and take one game at a time. We were thrilled to have it, but it means absolutely nothing in terms of the playoff picture.”
Following a 3-0 win over No. 2 St. Martin’s in its District 6-III opener, E.D. White vaulted from No. 5 into a three-way tie for No.1 with Newman and Opelousas Catholic.
The Cardinals’ ascent to the top spot came after a 2-4-1 start, which Cavell said was misleading because the losses occurred against teams such as Brother Martin and Catholic High of Baton Rouge.
“Our four losses at the start were against some of the top teams in Louisiana,” she said, “so they weren’t just the average run of the mill teams.”
Since its big win over St. Martin’s, E.D. White (11-7-2 overall) has gone 4-2-1, but it has dropped back down to No. 6.
During that time, the Cardinals suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss in non-district play to Country Day.
“That was a low point as far as our level of play,” Cavell said, “because we had been playing real good ball.”
E.D. White returned to its winning ways Saturday with a 3-2 district win over St. Charles Catholic that improved the Cardinals’ district record to 3-1. Nick Duet, Daniel Allemand and Matt Bonvillain each scored in the Cardinals’ victory.
“You may want to focus on Todd Magee, but we’re going to hurt you somewhere else,” Cavell said of her team’s offensive balance. “That’s really paid off for us. In a couple of games, Todd was our leading scorer. In other games, Allen (Crochet) was our leading scorer. In another game, Nick Choate led us offensively. So we’ve had a lot of diversity on offense.”
E.D. White’s defense is also a solid group led by sweeper Paul Ledet and fullback Dustin Clement, a returning all-region selection. Returning all-region pick Jeremy Robichaux mans the net for the Cardinals.
“Jeremy is a high caliber goalkeeper,” Cavell said. “He’s done a good job for us the past few years. As I told him (Thursday), he needs to become a little more vocal for us and step up as a leader on defense. He has always done it in actions, but I think he needs to do it a little more in communications too.”
With such an experienced and talented club, E.D. White is looking to improve on its quarterfinal playoff finish from a year ago. But that won’t be easy, Cavell said.
“The difference between trying to get to the playoffs and getting to the playoffs and getting a win is a lot easier than trying to get from the quarterfinals to the semifinals,” she said. “To reach the top there is a tiny little bit you have to accomplish. It seems like just one game, but the amount of effort and focus is much greater.”

At LaPlace, the Cardinals improved to 3-1 in the District 6-III soccer standings by beating the Comets Saturday afternoon.
EDW (11-7-2 overall) got its offense on track early with a pair of first half goals. Nick Duet gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 14th minute, and David Allemand added a goal in the 21st minute.
The Comets scored a goal in the 24th minute to make the score 2-1 at halftime.
Matt Bonvillain increased EDW’s lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 48th minute. The Comets scored their final goal in the 72nd minute.
E.D. White will play host to Grace King at 6:30 p.m. today in a non-district match at Harvey Peltier Stadium. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday but was postponed because of rain.
