I am starting to think not. It would have been nice to have seen Horvath last night. I am not sure Steffan is our guy as he looked slow on all 3 goals this past window.

So do you think Horvath or Turner or someone else could be our number 1? Steffan doesn’t play and Horvath should be playing in the Premier league regularly by World Cup time.

At this point Turner has earned it. But expect him to slide like Steffen if he doesn’t get the minutes at Arsenal.
Horvath must just be horrible in practice, but he will also be in the PL and playing. Hopefully he continues to develop and creates a three headed monster.

Whoever plays well for a high level club team in the fall will be the number one.

Whoever plays well for a high level club team in the fall will be the number one. Well Turner will be going to Arsenal, but will he be playing? Horvath's team is probably being promoted to the Premier League and he has taken over the number one position with Nottingham Forest. I have read that his play has been stellar since taking over and that he is a main reason why his club is being promoted. Steffan seems to be a perpetual backup with Manchester City. Look at that second goal from last night. Steffan makes two saves but is unable to gather the ball, so he hurriedly retreats to his line and decides to go to the near post exposing the entire goal for an easy goal on the cross. Positionally it was not the best choice for him to make.

I've always Steffen was our obvious #1 guy. However, after these last 3 qualifiers, I honestly thought he looked like he was drunk. The errors he made are not that of a top level GK.
We need someone who is actually playing all year at a high level club. Like someone mentioned earlier, Steffen is a perpetual backup at Man City. I say go with Horvath.

Supposedly GGG prefers Steffen's ability to play the ball with his feet (both in playing out of the back short and with long distribution) over the other two GKs. However, as we've seen with Turner, a GKs ability to be a shot stopper can (and I'd say should) outweigh any other GK attribute. But, they gotta be playing with their clubs...
With that being said, I think the GK position is unique in that playing time is NOT as big of an issue as it is for a field player if, stay with me, said GK is going against intrasquad top talent day in and day out in practice and playing in less important games.

Let’s see in six months. Who is playing, where and how much, and who is healthy. I think it’s too early to tell.

I disagree. However good their club teams may be, intrasquad work only benefits so much. Game situations, when something is actually on the line, is something that can only be mirrored when you're actually in the game. Steffen was not good over the past 3 games. From the next time our team steps on the field, we better be playing our best guys. The GK who features next will be the guy to play in the WC, if I were to guess. And I just don't think it's going to be Steffen.

Steffan had two drops this cycle. One led to a goal against Costa Rica. Right now I’m all in on Matt Turner.

Steffan had two drops this cycle. One led to a goal against Costa Rica. Right now I’m all in on Matt Turner. We are in agreement that Steffan’s play this last window leaves a lot to be desired. His clean sheet against Mexico was more of the fault of Mexico not to produce good shots. Instead they wasted good opportunities with hastily taken shots that were way off target. Both of the Costa Rica goals were off set pieces and so was the Panama goal. The last Costa Rican goal he did make 2 saves before retreating back to his line, but he wanted to catch the ball with that first shot and then gave up the rebound which eventually led to the goal. What I find illustrative was how he went back to his line. He went to the post exposing the entire goal for a Tico cross and shot that was easily put away. It was a blunder. I would like to see Horvath, because all we have seen of him was his replacement of Steffan after Steffan went down in the Nations League Final. Horvath has been lauded by his club for their fight to gain promotion to the Premier league. sbisoccer.com/2022/03/ethan-horvath-continues-excellent-run-with-nottingham-forest?amp=1

After watching Horvath Blunder in the mud at El Salvador, this topic continues to be a relevant matter as well as our choice for striker.
Three back up EPL keepers, Steffan, Horvath, and Turner as well as an aging Sean Johnson and a young up and comer Slonina are the choice for the Qatar roster.
I am believing that Slonina is going to get the third spot so that he can be ready for the 2026 World Cup which I believe he will be the starter by then. So that probably means Hotvath and Johnson would not go, but my view is only speculation and it is very possible Johnson or Horvath would go in that third spot.
Also, it is no guarantee with this team that these keepers will be healthy come November.
I am hoping fate provides us with the next Brad Friedel and hopefully there will be no Kasey Keller to keep Friedel on the bench.!

Do we see a David Regis-like move ala 1998 and have Frei not only make the roster, but possibly start, in a World Cup game?

Dean Henderson looking very like to be loaned out from Manchester United to Nottingham Forest, likely to be the #1.
If Horvath can beat him out, would likely be the #1 for US in Qatar.

At this point, it looks like if any of our top 3 or anyone else can be a starter at a top European club, would have the inside track to being our national team starter in Qatar. This fall will have a lot to view in terms of selection to our national team so do your homework and watch European as well as MLS football. There is always the possibility a new up and comer can emerge since now and then. Goalkeeping used to be our strength, but we seemed to have regressed in the past years in providing top shelf goalkeeping.

Steffan now on loan to Middlesbrough for the upcoming season, Which means he probably gets to be a regular starter.

I'd have to respectfully disagree. getting consistant minutes in chamipionship level football, which is still an incredibly high level, doesn't knock him off the roster in my opinion. If anything I think it gives him more exposure to the game and more experience. I think there's great potential for experience considering the position Horvath now finds himself in.

Well Middlesbrough is championship level this year too so that means Steffan is at the same level as Luton Town. From what I read, Steffan had a very bad game this first week of the season. Could Slonina be ready for Qatar? Seems he will be the starter in 2026. Maybe he can be there for 2022 as well, but he doesn’t move to Chelsea till after the MLS season ends, most like January 2023, and he will probably not be the Starter there with Mendy holding down that position. Just read that Chelsea and Mendy are at a stalemate over a new contract so who knows?
