Remember that at this level of competition, soccer becomes a mental game...more than anything else. Defense wins games : Defenders and midfiledders, including keepers will win games by staying concentrated, by keeping their marks in constant check, by disallowing space, and by keeping balance, shape and depth, and of course by denying the other teams any scoring...opportunities. Offense wins games: Attackers with the help of offensive mids will take advantage of the other team's mental breakdowns on defense...and exploit any scoring oppportunities. It will all come down to how well the players will have learned from their regular season mistakes and if they won't allow their past nemesis endlist to repeat itself...in the playoffs. Hopefully they got rid of all the kinks in their preparation for the playoffs. At this level, one mistake will translate into a goal and perhaps the game... One corner kick set up breakdown will cause a heading score and perhaps the game... One wall set up mistake and a free kick will lodge the ball in the upper ninety and will cost the game... It is all a mental game at this level... My son recently mentioned to me that soccer players are very intelligent students....I agree with him their are brain multitask oriented and make instantaneous decisions on their own, without coaches tinkling their options from the press box... May the most intelligent team, thus, remain on top of their game and ... their nerves... to win the right to advance to even more mental toughness required games. The most intelligently lead teams will meet for the state championship! Did Bora Milutinovitch speak of a chess game?! So long, Rainbowcycle

See my question below in the thread on Impact on Coaches. The answer to it is the answer to winning all games, or at least improving your attack which should lead to goals. There are three parts, and only 1, is seen rarely in a high school game. If your team can master these three technics, then I bet you can beat anybody.

As most of you can see, I deleted most of what was on this thread. If that is reason to take away my moderator status, so be it. I can live with it.
To Rainbow: You asked a valid and easily answered question on this thread. McScruff gave you a valid, comical but correct answer to that question. It is an absolute fact that the brain is more important than skills. The brain controls all human body functions and without it human life cannot exist. You may not have liked his comical and somewhat sarcastic response, but it in no way deserved the response he got from you. To talk about legal action, tracking down his computer isp, esp, usp or whatever it is, to talk about district attorneys, mafia and that junk was totally uncalled for. It is a sad day when someone cannot make a humerous comment on a topic (McScruff, I thought it was funny as heck) without being slammed back and threatened by another person. Good grief. If you post, be prepared to take some criticism. If you can't, don't post!! This website is for all of us to talk about soccer. We won't agree on all things and it would be boring if we did. Lets have some fun on here. In the meantime keep this tread on t

I WAS SAVING THIS FOR ANOTHER QUESTION, BUT THERE ARE FOUR FACTORS FOR A SOCCER PLAYER THAT THE USSF SAYS IS THE BASIS OF ALL SOCCER PLAYERS. FITNESS, TECHNIQUE, TACTICS, AND PSYCHOLOGY.
IF YOU LOOK 2 ARE BODY BASED: FITNESS AND TECHIQUE AND THE OTHER 2 ARE MENTAL BASED: TACTICS AND PSYCHOLOGY.
IT IS OBVIOUS THAT BOTH ARE IMPORTANT. BUT THE USSF SAYS THEY ARE MORE IMPORTANT AND PREVALENT AT DIFFERENT TIMES. TECHNIQUE IS IMPORTANT AND STRESSED AT A YOUNG AGE OF A SOCCER PLAYER. HERE A PLAYER IS SHOWN HOW TO PROPERLY KICK, PASS, SHOOT, AND WHATEVER ELSE THAT IS MECHANICALLY BASED. AS THE PLAYER DEVELOPS, THEN TACTICS ARE TAUGHT AND EMPHESIZED. EXAMPLES OF THIS MAY BE ATTACKING IN THE ATTACKING 3RD, 1ST, 2ND, OR 3RD ATTACKING OR DEFENDING. AFTER A PLAYER HAS MATURED, THEN FITNESS BECOMES THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. THIS IS SEEN AT THE COLLEGE AND MORESO AT THE PRO LEVELS. PSYCHOLOGY IS EQUALLY PRESENT THROUGH ALL THREE PHASES OF DEVELOPMENT.
SO, THE ANSWER IS BOTH. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE MENTAL GAME, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO HAVE THE SKILL OR TECHNIQUE DOWN TO BE ABLE TO APPLY THE TACTICAL GAME.

Yes, Shrevedad maybe, I got off the wrong side of the bed this morning... I usually take life on the lighter side these days, a good laugh at all the misery surrounding us is always more beneficial than any lamentation. My apologies to anyone I might have offended; and no ShreveDad, you seem to be a very good moderator only leaning slightly on one side, though! However, it seems that a particular group of individuals have been hard at work to, if not "sabotage" my threads; at least at making every possible attempt to turn off, any constructive contribution from others, by their so called sarcastic humor... Frankly, I would like them to put an end to it and so would the silent majority. The latter has completely stopped posting on our board for these very reasons. They don't like being shunned either! There is a fine "thread", enjoy the pun line... ; between, on one hand, putting in the middle of your argumentation, some comments on a lighter note; and on the other hand, by downright shutting off any positive answer, through so called humorous remarks exempt from any depth of thought. Take the time at least to address the new topics with some sense of intelligent structured thought of mind, when you answer someone else's posts. Destroying ideas is so much easier, than building newer dreams. I always have in mind the stone placed on the spot where Martin Luther King was shot down...and remember Robert Kennedy and JFK. Did someone call the mafia...!? A quote from the Bible is carved in the granite stone which underscores: "Let's sacrifice the dreamer to see what will come out of his dreams...!" So much truth to this!! Especially as we feast his people's contributions to our lives in the United States of America this week, in our children's Schools of Learning! USASOCCERBOY, we need a few more good guys like you on this board...! Thank you for your opinions on the game we care so much about....and peace to everybody else on this wonderful time of purple, green, and yellow Mardi Gras Season! Ya'll go catch some beads! So long Rainbowcycle.

My pleasure Rainbow. These are not just my views. They were taught to me by higher coaches. I am just passing the information along.

Shrevedad you have my vote in favor of your actions. It is a sad day, and that is why I am curtailing my posts. I'm just going to walk away shaking my head.
By the way, does adidas make a good leather mafia trenchcoat?

Coach4365, to be "legit" if you ask my advice, I'd say don't even try it. It is very hard and might not be worth all the trouble...nor all the investment, and then again?! Why don't you simply try to be a good Chris+ian, it does wonders... and it is contagious, plus it makes you feel so good about yourself knowing the others are well taken care of at the same time! Friends bequeath friends...and so does friendship! Peace to you my friend and may Your God bless you! So long, Rainbowcycle.

CoachRay40, maybe I'll be able to lay out my plan, that I started on the Boys' Club Board, to Lafayette and Louisiana sooner than I thought after all... I wouldn't want "our soccer project" for our children's best future in this state, to be "stillborned" by some individuals with a keen sense of dry sarcastical humor, would I ?! Instead, I would like to share it with you and the rest of our great state, so we could improve on it together, and come to a consensus to serve our children in the best possible of ways: by being fair, inclusive, and efficient. I still would welcome you Coach Ray at our round table though, it is never too late to join...! So long my friend, Rainbowcycle.

You know i really hate to say this but three coaches on this team need to get back to the basics of this website. I realize that people have different opinions, which is why this site was made. However, to begin to attack each other instead of ideas is simply unprofessional. Additionally, is it really necessary to attack someone w/ biblical passages and call someone unchristian just because they have differing opinions than yourself. In fact, i have a biblical reference, LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.I must say i looked forward to reading this thread because i believed it was a very interesting topic and i wished to state my opinion that heart is what truly wins in the playoffs. However, after reading the verbal lashing upon the site, i must leave it with distaste in my mouth. I am sorry but let's get back to the meaning of the website.

Heart... Utilityplayer 04, you hit the nail right on the head... I often tell my classes, that at times children are the adults, and the adults the children.... I hope the others will hear your message coming from your heart as well! The floor should be yours, after all you are our present and future! I am so glad that you brought up the utmost importance of loving your enemies, because in our game of soccer, it brings along sportsmanship and good conduct from the players and fans alike on and off the field... I just attended the Lafayette High 6 - St. Amant 1 game and was so pleased with the first class act presented on the field from the players and coaches, as well as from the cheering fans on both sides in the stands, saluted by a heartwarming sunny afternoon. Kudos to both teams, coaches and fans...and to you as well! It seemed as if the Lafayette High players displayed a little more heart than St. Amant and the fact that they are the defending champions might have somewhat intimidated the Gators, from the onset?! St. Amant possesses a very sound and well coached formation, but never really took it to the Lafayette team as they should have done it in a playoff contest. The Carencro Golden Bears took it to the Lions last Wednesday, with their uncontested 2-0 win at Lafayette High; it would probably have helped St. Amant to have watched that tape... St. Amant boasted two very talented and fast "Brazilian" type forwards who unfortunately couldn't count on any support from their teammates. There was nothing, they could do alone against the strong and experienced Lafayette backs... I also wonder, if St. Amant awesome centerback #20 was not a little bit underused at that position, when he could have brougt up some well needed support as an offensive midfielder with his skills and size. Hopefully, he is not a senior, and will be able to show us that side of him next year!? The St. Amant players approached the game in perhaps, a too conventional and conservative way, leaving the free reins of the game in the Lafayette High players' hands, who didn't let that tempting opportunity pass them at all. If, I might not seem too bold, I would tell the Lafayette forwards to at times, when they work down the flanks cross the ball back to the 11/18 range of the box, where they lacked some physical presence most of the time, instead of always crossing the ball square in front of the mouth of the goal. They did, however, manage to score two pretty goals doing just that. I doubt, Jesuits will allow them such easy knock ins though...! This is not intended to second guess the Lafayette Coaches, after all as defending State Champs they don't have to receive any lessons from anyone. Robby Leger and Belfour know the ins and outs better than anyone else; notwithstanding, well meant advice is always welcomed by receptive coaches. It is merely intended as an option; knowing very well that at times, you don't want to serve the ball back at all at the top of the 18, since you might run the risk of having it intercepted by the other team and converted into a fast transition game, leading to a deadly counter. I guess, when you are up by a few goals, you may count it as a safe and lethal option. Heart, big heart, very big heart: play with it, live with it and love with it, and you'll be a winner, always... Certainly don't forget to offer some flowers to your friends on February the 14th... Thank you Utilityplayer4, you're the adult, we're the silly children. From now on, I'll play you on my team any time with your big contagious heart and I invite you to turn your lights back on, that we adults, unfortunately turned off for a little while! ! Did we say Brains or skills? What about adding some big heart to it from now on...! So long, Rainbowcycle

as i have said before, the high school season is too short to really build a team.
so mind, more specifically tatics, are more important at this "level" (i assume we are talking about high school).
another way to put it is teamwork. the teams who win are the ones who can play as a team.
because the season is short, most schools either play as a team or they dont.
if i were coaching a high school team, i would focus most of my practice time on playing as a team.

Many college coaches have complained that once their team is starting to play properly, the season is over. This could be said with the high school season too. The problem is in the USA, youths are changing teams every few months so they rarely get to play with a tacticfully capable team. If I was a coach, I would school them and train them in the off season so I could concentrate on practicing in the regular season. Training is not practicing, but I bet LHSAA would not like it if a coach was doing juggling and other one person excercises. The LHSAA system stifles development because they are use to a football mentality.

TEAM a very good winning concept to bring on the table... T-ogether E-ach Player and Everyone else for that matter A-chieves M-ore Wouldn't you say Mindgame... -very good soccer name by the way- that high school soccer follows somewhat the national team concept: where you invite the best national players from the different professional club teams to perform at the international level and to showcase what your country, or your high school..., has the best to offer at the moment? High schools could very well be following the same concept, only at a lower locel level; as a microcosm in other words, of what is done at the apex of professional soccer!? Could both of you: usasoccerboy and Mindgame see the relationships between TEAM and BRAINS-SKILLS-HEART, as they apply to SUCCESS at the high school level in the playoffs? See if you could elaborate on this a little more...? I am eager to see if your thought development will lead to subcategorizing tactics and strategy under on or more of the Team - Brains - Skills, or Heart concepts??! So long, Rainbowcycle

Brains - Tactics Skills - Technique Heart - Psychology and Fitness.
They are all equally important.
