Wow. What’s an awesome two weeks of soccer in the great state of Louisiana. Lots of interesting scores this past weekend make this ranking even more difficult. But here goes nothing.
1)SJA (15-0-1)/ STM (17-0-1) - yup…..I did it. Call me Switzerland this week. I just can’t pick sides. They both take the top spot for the week! Each team had one of their more impressive weeks so far this season. SJA would invite over two Mississippi teams to complete in the Red-stick Roundup. Max Preps currently has NW Rankin as the #1 team in the nation while Clinton sits at #3. SJA would beat both by a score of 3-1 and 2-1. STM would extend their unbeaten streak to 59 games! 14 of their 17 games have been shutouts. Impressive wins to note this week for the Cougars were Hannan, Bryd, Southside and Caddo. Honest question…….do we size the rings already for the Cougars in Div II ?? Well wait, I think we all forget, we all know they have the the ring company on speed dial.
3)Parkview (15-0-1) - no great matchups in the past two weeks for the Eagles, BUT they are handling the task put before them. Four straight shutouts with 15 goals scored. Unfortunately, a game vs Sacred Heart was postponed. Hopefully it gets made up but a nice match with Newman awaits on Wednesday.
4)Newman (9-1-2) - the Greenies continue to impress. They had wins over Div I opponents Mt. Carmel and Dominican , while playing to a draw vs SSA and Sacred Heart. They did recently drop a game I didn’t think they would to the Cubs of U high 1-0. ( I see you Coach Melissa and Cub faithful). PBS and SJA are notable upcoming matches for the Greenies
5)Episcopal- (13-0-1) - the Knights hang on the the five spot. They would get a nice 3-0 win vs Vandy and a draw vs Sacred Heart in the Holiday cup. I will be keeping an eye on the Hannan match on Jan 12
6)SSA (11-1-2) - the Doves continue to confuse me. They post five shutouts with Bryd, Dominican and PJP being in that number ………but then tie Southside 0-0. With that being said , gigantic matchups are ahead for SSA on Jan 12 and 13. Those two games should shake up the top 10.
7)Captain Shreve (14-2-0) - the “Queens” of the north get their yearly dose of out of state competition. They would win three of the four of those games. A fun matchup vs Caddo on Jan 15 is the next big game for Shreve.
8)Dominican (16-3-1) - you get better by playing the best. Dominican is testing that theory as of late. Unfortunately for them, a few L’s have been placed next to their name. I think if you ask anybody though, losses to Newman, SJA, STM, and two National power houses can only help you learn what you need to know about your team. Coach Al will use all that info gathered to benefit his team going forward.
9)Sacred Heart (10-1-4) - the Cardinals would move up 1 spot to number 9 after their performance in the past two weeks. While it may not be W’s , three draws vs St Mikes , Episcopal and Newman caught everybody’s eye.
10)Southside (13-2-4) - this one I have gone back and forth with for a month. Lots of friendly banter between friends. The question is “how good is Southside??” They were close to the top ten weeks ago but large loss to SJA followed by draws against Alexandria and Lafayette high had be second guessing everybody’s high opinion of the Dolphins. STM would then handle business against them as well but then something happened. A draw vs Mt. Carmel was ok, but the draw vs SSA put me over the edge. Southside is trending back up. They earned the 10 spot at least for the next two weeks in my poll.
These next few teams are chomping at the bit to break back in or even get in for the first time.
U- High - Newman draw caught everybody’s eye. Especially those in District 5
St Michael’s - peaking at the right time?? Healthy ??…looks like it
Loyola Prep- loss to Northshore hurt , but three straight wins since have them trending back up
Thibodaux - undefeated but do they have one signature win?
Who ya got?
