Trojans blank Tarpons Perry Pitre Sports Correspondent MATHEWS -- In John Carpenter’s horror classic "The Fog", ghostly apparitions return to wreak havoc and mayhem on a small town. While it wasn’t quite that scary for South Lafourche on Tuesday, Central Lafourche did wreak havoc and mayhem, and in their all-white uniforms, did seem to appear mysteriously out of a heavy fog en route to a 5-0 victory in the District 7-I opener for both teams. By the second half, the fog was so thick it was impossible to see the visitors’ bleachers from the press box. Indeed, it was difficult to see the far side of the field, causing Central’s P.A. announcer to say at one point, "And I lost the ball. I guess it’s in that corner where I can’t see." In the first half, however, it was all too clear that this would be Central’s night. Jesse Dufrene and Matt Labat got off three shots on goal within the first two minutes as most of the action took place in the vicinity of South Lafourche’s goal. Dufrene scored the first goal of the night, a corner shot in the 14th minute of the first half. Labat would get the last at the 29th minute of the second half. In between, Nick Melacon would convert a penalty kick in the 17th minute, and Neil Adams would score in the 39th, both in the first half. Thad Thibodaux’s goal in the 23rd minute of the second half rounded out the scoring for Central (7-5, 1-0 district). "What I was hoping to do was to get some goals quick," said Central coach Adrian Garcia. "I knew it was going to be tough to score when it (the fog) came in. I didn’t think it was going to be this thick, though." South Lafourche (3-3, 0-1) played a more competitive second half, getting several shots on goal but were unable to connect on their opportunities. "We came out flat, gave up three goals in the first half," Mark Simoneaux, South Lafourche coach, said. "We played a little better in the second half, had some looks, had some possessions where we were able to move up the field. It’s a good measuring stick to play a quality program like Central Lafourche. "When the home team is wearing solid white and you can’t see across to the field to see a guy, it can be a little difficult," joked Simoneaux. houmatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061213/SPORTS/612130333/1032/SPORTS01

Terrebonne sweeps South Lafourche Perry Pitre GALLIANO -- It was a good night, albeit with a foggy ride home, for the Terrebonne Tigers as both the boys and girls soccer teams took district wins over South Lafourche on Friday. Jordan Cunningham’s goal at the 17th minute of the first half gave the Terrebonne (5-3-3, 1-0 District 7-I) boys all the scoring they would need en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Tarpons. “That first goal, it never should have gone in,” South Lafourche coach Mark Simoneaux said. “Our goalie jumped a little early, tipped it with his fingers on the way down, hit that crossbeam, and (the ball) ended up going in. It ended up three to nothing, but if you watched this, our defense kept us in the game. We have a lot of speed, and that speed makes up for a lot of ground.” Cunningham scored again in the 34th minute of the second half on a long breakaway leading to a perfectly placed shot to the corner past the outstretched fingers of Tarpons (3-4, 0-2) goalie Van John Galjour. Galjour ended the game with nine saves. “They (the Tarpons) defend very well,” Terrebonne coach Julio Contreras said. “They’re hard to penetrate, but we had one that managed to get in.” Jeremy Worthy’s goal at the 39th minute of the second half rounded out the scoring. TERREBONNE 13, SOUTH LAFOURCHE 0 (GIRLS) In the girls’ match, Kandice Champagne scored six goals and Jessica Herradon scored four as the Lady Tigers dominated the Lady Tarpons. Scotti Dufresne, Gillian McCarter, and Katie Babin each scored once for Terrebonne. “We had a very good night,” Contreras said. “We were passing well, and finding open shots. But South Lafourche plays with a lot of heart, and we respect that.” houmatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061216/SPORTS/61216012/1032/SPORTS01
