What usually is the most effective way of dealing with a team that packs the box?

combination play at the top of the box to break down the top defenders .. then just light up the keeper with shots. hope for a deflection or a rebound.
that's how i would go about it.

I agree with putmeincoach. The best way is crosses and also taking shots from the outside.

The best way to beat packing the box is to have low, hard crosses from the outsides, and hope that a deflection gets in. That's how many goals are scored when you play teams that pack the box.

The best way to overcome "packing the box" is to foul, and foul hard, especially when the ref's not looking.

You entice them and spread them thin by bringing play to midfield maybe even all the way back and patience....

send a shot at someones balls, then when they fall over, shoot through the hole you just created

crossing the ball is fine .... the whole idea with the combination play though is that through the course of that you get looks from the outside. with crosses served from the corners, then you get less outside shots.
either way is fine.

So - you want to beat Airline and their rope-a-dope. I agree with what has already been said, attack from the flank, and make use of negative passes at the top of the box to create space and shoot on goal. I saw Airline beat Byrd and play Magnet close playing 10 on defense. This is a good strategy for Airline because of their personnel. They will keep games close this way but I am afraid they will lose most of them. I just don’t see their counter attack as much of a threat. Byrd and Magnet both had quite a few chances to score and next time they will slip them by. When the offense relaxes, hits good crosses, and starts putting the ball on goal from a little farther out I think they will see more goals. One more thing. Playing for a tie and a shoot out is very risky business. How many times have you see a quality keeper get beat in a shootout by someone who guesses right?

the best way to beat it to do what all of u said but to do it early and ware the other teams hopes down... because the longer u keep them in the game the better they will play...
i agree with everything u said mpoole... but think about it this way... teams that plays this "10 in the box" formation must not expect to beat the team with a normal 4-4-2 formation or w/e other formation they might play so i guess a shootout is a less risky because as u said anyone can lose in a shoot out....so i guess in a way this helps the team...

Possession around the box and playing penetrating passes between defenders. Also, width play and driven balls from the flanks.
