In tonight’s (Jan 15th 2007) high school soccer game between Holy Savor Menard and Opelousas. Opelousas defeated Menard 9 to 2.
The single most awful moment for Menard in the game occurred at about the 13th minute of the first half with the score 1-0 Opelousas, when Menard’s sweeper in a head long race towards his own goal with an Opelousas striker caught up to a 50/50 ball and put his foot in front of the ball. The Opelousas’s striker not believing he could be outrun flew right over the ball. The center promptly blew the whistle and issued the sweeper a red card for “foul on a clear goal scoring opportunity.” With all of Menard’s defensive speed off the field the half ended 3-1 Opelousas.
After the speedy sweeper was issued a red it seemed as if the Menard defense became slow and unable to keep up with the pace of the game. Also the Opelousas Catholic players were able to take every ball in the air without a bounce play the ball to a fellow teammate. However they also had a bit of luck. How else can one explain a ball that bounces off the top post straight down, then bounces off the ground into the back of the net? Not sure which player that was but if he can do that nine times out of ten then the pros will be calling his mom soon.
However one must praise Menard’s two orphaned goals for their wiles.
The First goal was off of a corner kick to the near post striker. He did not seem to show much speed up top during the game but seemed to be in opportune places at the right time. This was demonstrated when he took the ball into a kicking contest with an OC defender and after winning the ball put it in the back of the net.
The second goal for Menard was interesting in that it was well played with team work. I really enjoyed watching the left winger and center mid that played one-two passes down the field all the while both looking for penetration. When the shot came it was at the top of the 18 on the left side and was directed towards the top right corner of the goal. Menard’s left winger apparently knew that when he struck the ball it was going into the back of the net because he started walking back to his half of the pitch to set up for defending the kickoff.

so i can notice you're saying all good stuff about menard
but even at the lack of a sweeper... 9-2 ?
unless that one man is there whole team then i think this was an outstanding performance by OC. also you say so much about menards 2 goals but yet... how did OC score their 9 goals?
you're giving alot of credit to a team that lost by 7 goals...

I did praise their first touch on the ball and their ability to make amazing shots. I did forget to mention their passing ability and pace on the ball. But, in my defense, it is easier to remember two goals than nine.

Making excuses? I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm just reporting what I enjoyed. Stop being so sensitive and looking for opportunity to argue. If you feel I got it all wrong then you give us your view of what happened. Perhaps we were at different games.

OC was the better team last night. They had better touches on the ball, better passing, better shooting, etc. Menard came out ready to play and for the first fifteen minutes, it looked to be a great game. Once Menard's sweeper was issued his direct red we had to make some changes that obviously were not beneficial to Menard. Once the score was either 5 or 6 to 1 in the second half, the coach started getting some other players game experience for the future.
Congratulations to OC, they won the district title.
Menard now plays Bolton Thursday night for the second place seed.
