Here is the classic story about this travesty of a rule: In the fall of 2003 USC Levski was pounding the home team Memphis Futbol Club en route to a trip to the finals of the Superclubs Tournament. The Levski fans had their plastic clappers sizzling in support of the team when the MFC Coach called the ref over for a chat. After listening to him for a few minutes, he went over to Levski's Bulgarian coach, Radi Baltov, who began gesturing in the classic exasperated soccer coach pose. The ref then came over to the Levski fans and said "I cannot forbid you from using those clappers, but the other coach says his players cannot hear him because of them." There was a moment of indecision as the Levski supporters contemplated what they would do. Just then we hear Coach Radi protest from across the field: "WHAT EEEEEZ THEEEESE, TEEEEEEENIS MATCH!!!!! The clappers chimed back in and Levski waltzed into the finals. After the game Coach Radi remarked: "Clappers not bother them. What really bother them is getting butts kicked by team from Shreveport." How strictly do you enforce this rule? Don't high school bands and some pep squads have "artificial noisemakers"? yeah i remember that, good times. Coach Radi always has quippy quips

hmmm...just what rules would you like the officials to enforce? and which ones could they disregard? i'll let teh airhorns be used, but don't expect a PK for a tackle from behind by teh last defender 1-on-1 with a keeper...
get real folks, officials should enforce all of the rules, not the ones that make you happy

alright goatman, you may have missed the things i heard on the field, but you can't tell me you missed the obscenity at the ahs vs. carencro game. When they played you at AHS. I was there, and I can't repeat what the guy said, but the whole crowd just sort of went quiet. So, like I said, obscenity is present there. But I didn't say I object to it. Only for the little kids at the game would I mind. Like other people are saying, it makes the game much more intense. I was trying to be more complimentary than anything towards the AHS and Como fans. Because I want LHS to do that sort of stuff. If you didn't notice, for the most part they just sort of sit there and act cool. (The students I mean)

i believe the real problems with interpreting rules for the refs comes down to too many different governing bodies. you must read a half-dozen rule books or by-laws to understand the rules that pertain to hs soccer in LA...can't we just keep it simple
on the matter of a coach getting ejected for the crowd noise, the coach is not responsible for the crowd...LHSAA request there be an administrator at each match that should be responsible for any confrontation or annoyance from the crowd

While it would be nice for a coach or school administrator to control an unruly crowd, it rarely happens. Coaches have too much else on their mind and most administrators don't know what they should do. As for the noise, I too like when it is extremely noisy. I can't hear the stupid comments and neither can the players. However, I do not like the air horns. It does startle the players. I am all for refs tossing unruly fans. Most of the fans I've either had to toss or at least chastise were the ones making racist or sexist comments to the players. That should never be allowed at the high school, youth or premier level and the administrators should appreciate us doing their jobs for them and not complain about it.

Air horns may be annoying. Fine heaven forbid we disturb the funeral atmosphere at most games. Let the fans make some noise. As long as it isn't personal, racist, or obscene, let the fans have some fun. It's not the classroom, it's a game. I enjoy hearing the students get on the opposing players. It's what the home side fans are suppose to do. Then when that team comes to your place you can return the favor. I watched the ST Amant Girls attend the Dutchtown/St Amant game (at Dutchtown by the way) and every time DTHS fouled a STA player they hollered and waved yellow cards. Pretty creative if you ask me.

As manchuriaman points out, airhorns are not illegal in Louisiana. Only whistles are illegal since it will confuse the players.
Airhorns are common at basketball games in high school. And football games.

Ok, you are the expert. tell me how an airhorn causes confusion in a soccer game. You as a referee do not blow an airhorn.

But it disturbs the mind, and may cause a slight discomfort on the field. Therefore we must protect the players and ban all fans from clapping, whistling, stomping, yelling, standing up, blowing air horns, or making any other noises that could cause confusion. I mean, that's obviously the only way this sport will grow.

just for the record, LHSAA 2005-2006 Handbook, Page B-80, article 7.14.1.1 restricts artificial noisemakers "...within the confines of a gymnasium..." Doesn't say you can't use at an outdoor sport. Gee, every been to a football game? What does the band play? Artificial noismakers...
