Lafayette ( J.V. ) plays the ball up the middle because it gets goals. Lafayette keeps the ball in the middle because some of the outside mids can't play balls well into the six ( Consistently ). Also, if Martin can score from 40 out, then what is the complaining for? As for fowards being sellfish, well, they are supposed to be. Now stop bashing your own teamates. Ghandi...kudos on the wrist slap for bashing teammates...never productive. Something good can be said for every player, and from a coaching standpoint, although you have to address serious deficiencies, from a human behavioral standpoint, it is a well known fact that continual negative waves doesn't result in higher productivity. Although an idealistic approach, if you focus on the positive aspect of player performance, the negative literally goes away...The player would much rather be praised than relentlessly attacked. I used to have a rule...If you have something bad to say, you have to come up with three good things first. And that rule particularly applies to the coach. So now for the quote... Question 1. Do you really believe that the middle should be the point of attack or did you just state that from a perspective of your experience at LHS? Your insinuation is that the JV gets goals attacking up the middle, but then indicate, I think, that the varsity prefers to play it up the side and centers, but doesn't because of slight deficiencies at the midfield wing positions. Correct me if I misinterpreted that. I ask because in all the years that I have been watching soccer, more than 75% of all goals scored if not more excluding breakaways, "begin" with a cross in the offensive third, hopefully to the outside of the far post. Question 2. Are you endorsing boomball as a high percentage scoring opportunity? How many of those shots from 40 out have gone in and how many have been turned over. By the way, parents love boomball. They think it's great when a player kicks the ball 40 meters to the opposing backfield or goalie...lol. I'll even ask a better question. As a goalie, what is easier to manage, a ball sent in from 40 out or a cross in a crowd? Don't get me wrong, there is a time and place for long balls, but even those opportunities will occur most often on the wings, in many cases to switch the field, and not be shots on goal. See you Tuesday...Hope your visit to the 18th century is culturally stimulating...

Lafayette (J.V.) takes very little shots from 40 out, but when shots are taken from that for out, there is usually a good reason ( I.E. free kicks ). I think the reason Lafayette plays up the middle is because other J.V. teams give them the middle. Remember, J.V. games are completely different in style and speed of play than that of Varsity. I do not believe that the middle is the best place to play soccer, unless the other team's flat back four is begging for a through ball from a center mid. Also, in no way am I endorsing boomball as a good way to score. There is a time for boomball ( like you stated ), but should usually be kept to a minimum. I think you know the answer to the 40 yard out question, so I will not even dignify it with a response. Hope this clears so of this up.

But be careful...If a team gives you the middle, it may mean that that is where they want you. LHS has always been known for down the side and center, and teams know that is their game. This is where the work of the midfield wings comes into play... a wall pass to the middle and then I'm back down the side again. A relentless attack...
If you read the thread on small fields, you will recognize that the issue of playing on a narrow field puts all the defenders in the "middle"of the field. Whole different game on a regulation sized field...Check it out.

This is totally acceptable for Varsity, and probably required, but for J.V., it is a little less organized. In order to play the ball quickly on the outside, your outside mids need to be really good. Lafayette varsity is really lucky to have more than enough talent on the wings, but J.V. has still lots to learn on the outside. As for a team giving you the middle on purpose, that would not be too smart when you have really fast fowards like Lafayette ( J.V. and Varsity ) has. Also, Lafayette probably has one of the largest fields for soccer.

Since you're available, could you give me the starting line-up broken down into forwards, midfielders, backs, and subs that get substantial time. I realize that this is a bit off-thread, but I heard there were some changes in the midfield...

I'm sorry, that is top-secret material you are asking for. Just joking, but Coach Belfour is moving players around so much to try to find our 11 that it would be really hard for me to tell you a starting lineup.
