For a state CHAMPIONSHIP game the SOCCER field markings should be the lines that get noticed, clearly when you looked at that field it was the football markings that were clear. The soccer lines were not as clearly visible. That and the field goal that disrupted the game three times were a terrible disgrace to a championship game.

On the question of a GK picking up the ball outside the penalty area (PA) - there are four questions in this scenario or any situation on denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) and the resulting send -off.
The referee must satisfy 4 questions - called the Four Ds. They must evaluate the distance from the ball to player (the attacker must have been close enough to the ball at the time of the foul to continue playing the ball), distance of player to goal (the closer the foul is to goal, the more likley it is an OGSC), direction of play (the attacker must be headed directly towards the goal at the time of the foul - a player headed towards a corner has a far less opportune shot) and number of defenders(not more than one defender bewteen the foul and the goal, not counting the defender who committed the foul) . All four Ds must be met and satisified. This is the USSF/Fifa interpretation.
I was not there and did not see the situation so I cannot and will not comment on the call being correct or not. But this is what the referee is suppossed to evaluate. Intent is not a consideration. They either did it or not.

This is the way I saw the play. The ball was cleared by a Lafayette playerin the center of the field. When the ball was kicked the keeper was about 15 yards outside the 18 box. The defender was in pursuit of the ball and so was the Lafayette player, about 5 yards behind the Dom. player. When the defender saw the keeper there it looked like she peeled off to possibly receive a pas from the keeper. The keeper was back pedaling to try to be back into the box. When the Lafayette player saw the defender peel off, she sped up and it looked to me like it would have been a 50/50 ball if they were to each try to kick it. The keeper had 2 choices at that time. First kick it, and second pick it up like she did. She picked up the ball in the circle at the top of the 18 directly in the middle of the field. I don' like the idea of a red card awarded but what is the rule is the question. I don't think she picked it up with the intent to stop a goal, but that is what happened. It's almost like backing into a car and not meaning it, it happened.
I would like to know what you think - futbol is life. I am wanting to know because just maybe the ref is reading these treads and may get a better understanding of the rule as well. And just maybe learn from this experience.

I was at the game. This was the 1st time I had seen either team play. So this is the casual fan viewpoint. As far as the Laf.girl getting fouled in the box, I thought the play was called for offsides or a Laf. foul. Dom. took a free kick immediately after that happened.
The play by the keeper, my memory of the play is certainly not as detailed as sokerfan. It appeared to me she had plenty of time to make a play, I don't recall any players within 8-10 yards of the play. She had plenty of time to back-pedal or trap the ball and set up her kick. I think she lost track of where she was on the field and picked it up. She picked it up inside the circle but outside the box. I'm not so sure the markings made that much difference.
As far as the markings on the field are concerned, I didn't think they were that bad. I think people are looking for something else to bash Shreveport about.

From the descriptions, it certainly sounds like one of the Ds was not satisfied. That is distance from player to ball. It sure sounds like that one item was a potential issue. And if it was in the opinion of the referee, then there is no send off.
Perhaps a caution but as I stated in another post, a caution is to change a behavour. If this was really a mistake that was unintended, a butt chewing" may be more in line. Use the caution when its really needed.
But all my comments carry one big caveat. This is based on comments posted here that describe the incident, not perhaps what actually happened as seen by the referee. I was not there so none of these comments can be construed as criticizing the referee. He was there, I was not. And a referee will see it different than a player, different than a coach and different than a spectator. It was his opinion that counted.

I will try to get a copy of the game film and see for myself. I thought the offensive player was close, maybe I'm wrong. The film should tell me exactly how far she was from the ball since the field is marked in yards for footbal. I'll get back if I can get a copy.

The worse thing about soccer is the inconsistancy of the referees. The other thing is 2 people can watch the same game and thing the game was called two different ways.
