I also saw the Byrd-WM game last night. Very exciting contest between 2 very good soccer teams. Proudladyrebdad's account is very accurate. The play by the WM keeper beating the Byrd players to the ball was probably the biggest play of the night. It was her only option and she never waivered in her decision. Very gutsy play, as was the play of WM all night. They just seemed to me to want it a bit more than Byrd.

Can someone please confirm the start time of the Lafayette @ Dutchtown match? The board has the start time of 3:30 but the local paper in Lafayette has the start time of 4:30.

I just thought they were showing up at 4:30 rather than 3:30 so there would be one less hour of game clock for Dutchown to score goals on them. I'm glad I was wrong about that.
It's good to see that Lafayette is adopting the Washignton D.C. approach that there is no limit as what your government can do for you, as long as they get to decide what those "benefits" are!

What I heard what happened is the Lafayette fishwrap is owned by Gannet. It is our understanding, corporate offices are in the eastern time zone, and they simply forgot to put "EST" behind 4:30. Or is it just another case of the birdcage liner staff's "empathy" towards LHS women's soccer... Since Alexandria's fishwrap is also owned by Gannet, I can assure you that rumor #1 is accurate. They do not care enough about the entire state, or the news business in general, to have any antipathy towards LHS. Their real goal is to run every newspaper in the state into the ground, so that everyone has to subscribe to their flagship birdcage liner, USA Today. The only "accurate" local news left is found on blogs.

Well, I guess I eat my words about scoring by Lafayette. Dutchtown had some opportunities in the first half with some shots saved with a good keeper effort or that were just errant, but they were generally taken at 20-25 yds out. Lafayette played with intensity but was patient and worked the ball into the goal area. If Lafayette had stronger finishing they could easily have had 2 goals in the first half as well, they had the better of possession, especially near the goal.
You had to figure Lafayette would make better adjustments at halftime; that has been a weakness at DTHS for years, and the tradition continued unfortunately. Even with Lafayette scoring a very early goal in the second half, there was plenty of time for DTHS to come back. However, their posessions continued to be short. There were a couple times were they slowed down, weren't so direct, and DTHS got some got some good shots off. They also had a chance in the second half on a breakaway that clanged off the crossbar. It was clear that DTHS had the talent to take time and break the defense down, but after years of playing extremely direct that just wasn't going to happen. Lafayette took away Dutchtown's number one plan and there was no backup.
Even down late in the game, DTHS seemed not to push forward as a group, as if it was better to lose by some than lose by a lot. I've seen that before in district play, where it is bad enough, but in the playoffs I really don't understand it. At the end Lafayette moved the ball at will.
DTHS has for years relied on the talents of some very special premier players to get them through. Unfortunately, that system can be broken down with good coaching and great effort, as it was today. That's too bad, because the DTHS program had a very unusual group of public school talent especially the last two years, and consistently failed to take the most of it.
Congrats to Lafayette, and best wishes to all of the DTHS players and parents, especially the seniors. You've put up with a lot over the years. You'll be missed, but you can be sure that the other teams in your district will be glad to see you leave after two years undefeated!

brscdad, thanks for the kind words about the Lafayette High player, her name is Sarah Brooks. Just want everyone to know her name, she is truly a class act. A very genuine person through and through.

Very accurate account brscdad. Lafayette outplayed a team that probably has the most raw talent in the state.
To the principal and athletic director of Dutchtown High: WHY IS THIS GUY COACHING YOUR TEAM?
I attended this game, honestly, scouting the teams. I had seen a couple of other Dutchtown games this season, and after seeing this one, I've got to say something:
This team, starting several club and three of the best players in the state, is horribly managed. There is absolutely no leadership from the sidelines in the mental or physical aspects of the game. Set pieces exhibit a complete lack of purpose and practice. Basic fundamentals and game intelligence is lacking. On-the-field adjustments are obvious and needed, but were never seen. Production from their top-flight players was never near its peak, because they hadn't been taught how to work off of one another. The lack of coaching was ever-so evident each game I've seen and especially tonight against a good team from Lafayette.
It's sad; the girls on this team deserved better. Again, why is this guy coaching your team? As I understand it, he's not a teacher and isn't affiliated with the school in any other manner. You've got one of the top programs in the state; ACT LIKE IT! The players deserve more. They and your school should have, in my opinion, been lifting a championship trophy at the end of this season... properly coached and trained in the physical and mental aspects of the game, no team in the state would have been able to touch you this season. It was a loss for you, but much more so for the players who dedicated and gave of themselves.

Well the semi-finals are set. I guess some coaches prefer to be tested early and often. It prepares them well for playoff soccer. You don't play all the tough ones at home. These coaches would prefer to be tested so the team learns to face adversity. Others prefer gaudy records but no tests away from home. A one loss season is outstanding, unless it is the last game. Good luck to all the remaining teams. WHICH WAY TO GO???

Since only Dutchtown fits the description you so eloquently posted, maybe you could enlighten us.

To the principal and athletic director of Dutchtown High: WHY IS THIS GUY COACHING YOUR TEAM? I don't think the principal and AD care who is coaching the team. As long as he is willing something really bad would have to happen for them to "fire" him. The AD has much "more important" things to worry about I'm sure. I doubt our AD even knew anything about our team when I played. Couldn't have said it better myself. It's been a problem from the beginning.

I attended this game, honestly, scouting the teams. I had seen a couple of other Dutchtown games this season, and after seeing this one, I've got to say something: I'm gonna call BS on this one. No way were you there scouting. Were you scouting for FHS, SSA, MCA or MHS? Unless you missed part of your own team playing to scout (which is highly doubtful), you're probably just a disgruntled parent. It's also your first ever post? You want to complain about a coach? Stand up and be counted. My guess is that you have another name on this board as well.

Now this is getting interesting. I witnessed the game, though my account is somewhat different than some who have already posted. One thing I have learned on this board is if you post something, be prepared to back it up. Something certainly smell fishy!
