please make sure to review overtime/pk rules prior to your high school playoff matches. It wasn't so much fun to celebrate a golden goal and then be forced to play out remainder of golden goal OT (not to mention being told prior to golden goal that my PK shooters had to be on the field to be able to shoot - another incorrect statement of HS rule which I tried to dispute (to no avail)). Maybe we should adopt a sliding scale payment system where refs are paid based on performance (ie, actual knowledge of the rules, not saying based on subjective "good" or "bad" game but actual rules). Demonstrable misapplication should result in lower pay. Seems to be no other motivation to ensure refs know HS technicalities ... Thanks! Rant over. That was fun. I know it sucks to be a ref that officiates more than HS soccer -- not sure all soccer can't be governed by same rules....but still, come on!

Some referees may have to actually pay to do a game.....

I can just see it, referees have to be at the school an hour early to take an exam to determine their pay for the game. Ow who will grade the test, the coaches don't know whether the answers are right or wrong. How about both the coach and the ref both take the test together.

Pokle - I go in to every match with the assumption a team wants to win the game, and have no expectations of overtime. If the team can't win in regulation, I just assume they really don't care about the victory, so we can just do any overtime period we care to do

The whole OT golden goal running out on the field thing did in fact sort of happen in the Episcopal/Newman game Friday night.
