In a match that was closer than the final score, Sulphur proved to be the better team in Shreveport Friday night. The first half was evenly played, with both teams having several scoring opportunities. The difference was that Sulphur had two great chances and made both shots and Shreve missed their chances. The score at the half was 2-0. The score stayed that way until around the 60 minute mark when the Shreve coach pulled Jeremy Wimer and put him up top to try and generate some scoring chances. Our second string goalie made a couple of mistakes on long balls that gave Sulphur two goals. Sulphur got their last goal on a ball that Wimer more than likely would have gotten as it flew across the goal. Shreve did score two goals as well, one of which came at the end of the match on a 40 yard roller than somehow went underneath the Sulphur goalie. All in all, the better team won tonight. Shreve's downfall was the same problem they have had all year, finishing the good scoring chances they get. Sulphur's #14 is an excellent forward, he made the difference in the match. One comment on the officials who came up from Lafayette, "GREAT JOB" They called a good match. Goat, you called it right. Good Luck to Sulphur the rest of the way.

If Wimer had stayed in the goal it more than likely would have ended 2-0 or 2-1. I will certainly continue to keep everyone up to date on what is going on up here.

You might be a goalkeeper if.... the ball gets by 10 of your teammates and the goal is blamed on you

I'm really glad to see Sulphur win. It's about time they got out of their first round loss slump that they've been in the past few years.

Congratulations to Sulpher on the win. Also, I thought the ref's did a great job as well. I was waiting to read what others thought about the game before I posted. I have to disagree with ShreveDad a little bit. Here's why..
The good thing about watching games at Indy stadium is that you can sit high enough to gain a good vantage point. I like to watch the defenses work, and Indy allows you to see them in relation to the whole field. Also, the football yard measurements are still on the field, so you can get a read on the distance between players.
I was stunned, then exasperated, watching the defense Shreve was playing. In my opinion, this is why they lost. Shreve had 1 or 2 defenders marking #14(i.e., keeping him onside) the whole match-or at least until I left midway through the 2nd half. He would set up 20-30 yards in the Shreve end of the field and they would just follow him back there and stand next to him. Unbelievable. They step 5 yards in front of him and he is irrelevent because he would be offsides if he touched the ball. Several times their last defender back was 40 yards away from the nearest player. This created a huge suck out in the middle part of the field and Sulpher won almost every ball there. Maybe part of the reason the ref's looked so good is because this defensive scheme prevented them from having to make any offsides calls.
I do not think playing tough teams toward the end of their schedule effected Shreve's play last night. I think that helps mental toughness-particularly up here where Shreve had something like a +75 goals differential against the other teams in District 1.
Hugely disappointed last night. I was rankled earlier in the year reading several people post the comment on this forum that the wildcard in district 3 would win the championship if they were placed in district 1. Guess we will have to wait until next year to prove them wrong.

Imeg is right. Sulphur came out and played the whole time. I kept finding myself wondering when Shreve would begin playing. They came out flat and didn't challange the ball like they can.
Savonarola is right about our defense. Putting people offsides has been one of our strong plays all year. I would have liked to seen them play it that way last night.
Congratulations Sulphur. . . Good luck and keep going. Give it to Lafayette strong and loud. We'll be cheering for you.

Congratulations Sulphur...sorry I doubted you, Imeg. Take care of your business and we could see a district 3 quarter at your place. I am not sure, but I think you might have to travel back up there for your next game, if Airline beats West Monroe.

I responded to an earlier thread about Sulphur's #14 C. Broussard and his unwillingness to make a pass when he gets into trouble. If he continues to play the way he did last night against Cap Shreve I'll willingly eat those words. He played as a leader last night and distributed the ball when he needed to. He had two goals and at least one assist. When he plays this way Sulphur's chance for putting the ball into the back of the net go way up.
