been reading all the hubbub about the playoff structure. definite problems with too many "poor" teams in the playoffs.
biggest problem is that with 9 districts, need 14 WC teams to make playoff brackets work out. just doesn't make sense that there are more WC's than district champs.
my first thought was all teams should be divided into 8 geographic districts, only #1 & #2 teams advance. PROS: with almost 64 (62) teams, each district almost the same size, everyone plays same # of district games; only top 16 teams advance, #'s work out for bracketing CONS: travel distances for district games might increase
second idea: stick with current distrcting, but only take #1 team in each district, plus next 7 best #2 or #3 teams from all distracts based on some formula (# of district wins, power ranking, etc...) PROS: bracketing works out CONS: power ranking systems almost always leave someone out in the cold (BCS, e.g?)
third idea: top div II and div III schools clearly can play on par with the better div I teams, and routinely beat weaker div I teams. have placement in divisions change each year based on playoffs/championships, with weaker teams "relegated" to lower divisions, and stronger teams "promoted" top higher divisions
