This was a very entertaining game. First half was very back and forth with each team hitting the crossbar once. I expected Rummel to come with a possession game, but they really played more of a counter style. It looked like they played a 3-4-3 when they were on offense and a 5-2-3 when they were defending. Lafayette played a straight 4-4-2. About 20 minutes in, Rummel got a PK. LHS goalie comes out feet first and hits the ball away and the guy. The offensive player falls......awarded a PK. After that, Rummel got the momentum and stepped up the pressure on Lafayette. Everything settled down with about 10 minutes remaining and then halftime.....Rummel - 1 Lafayette - 0. The second was dominated by Lafayette. The coach must have said something right, becasue Rummel haad few good chances on goal. Lafayette put heavy pressure and found the back of the net 15 minutes into the second off of a missed clear by the Rummel defense. 1-1. Lafayette gets a corner about 10 minutes later. Low to the near post, Lafayette flicks it in. 2-1 Lafayette. At this point Lafayette gets really fired up and with the exception of a few Rummel chances, keeps possession of the ball and is still pressuring the net. At this point you can tell that the Rummel players are getting frustrated and the fouls start happening. A couple of yellow cards are given. Lafayette comes down on a counter and the keeper makes the save and then tackles the Lafayette player as he is getting up. Lafayette gets a PK and burieis it. After this, Rummel starts mouthing to the ref and gets a couple yellow reds and then gets a straight red when a Rummel player deliberately kicks a Lafayette player after the ball is gone. Lafayette makes some runs, Rummel gets a few more yellows, ref blows the whistle. Game over.
Lafayette wins 3-1.
See you in N.O.

Good summary hdkjga, I felt Rummel had the better of things for the first 30 minutes. Lafayette started taking control with 10 minutes to go in the first half. The second half began with Lafayette taking charge. Rummel seemed to get away from their game. Felt like the PK call was questionable - the keeper blocked a shot on a break away (thought he was offsides, but I was well away from the play) and was diving for the deflection. Both players on the ground with the ball in the keepers hands when the call was made. But, Lafayette was the better team in the second half when it counted. The Lion's second goal was a corner kick that went in at the near post. Felt like Rummel made a mistake on that by not having a man on the post. The kick would have been easily cleared if they had a man on the post. Congrats to the Lions and good luck against the Blue Jays. You are a class program. Rummel had a good run and finished with a 24-6-1 record and a district championship. The last two years shows that their program is headed in the right direction and will be a team people mention in the future when talking about the top programs in the state.

hey lasocrfan are you talking about the pk for lafayette? the keeper didn't have the ball it was five feet in front of him. i was on that side of the field and had a real good look at it. some of the fans around me though the goalie was just trying to get up and put his hands on the lafayette player. both teams got PKs that could be questioned by the defensive team, that being said i think the ref crew did a good job of controlling a good game.

Never meant to imply that the loss was the result of bad officiating. Rummel was out played in the second half. On the call I questioned, I was diagonally away from the play and just stated what I felt I saw. I did feel that the PK should have never happened since the player was offsides before the play. Could be wrong on both accoumts, but from where I was sitting that's the way it looked to me. But, having said all of that, the Lions deserved the game - outplayed Rummel in the second half with some of their players losing their cool when the game was still on the line. I will conclude this by saying it was the worst half of soccer the Raiders played in the last 15 games. But, maybe the Lions had something to do with that.

hey lasocrfan i wasn't trying to imply you were blaming the refs, sorry if thats how it came across. i just wanted to know what you saw on that play. like i said many of the people around me thought the keeper was just trying to get back up not hold the lafayette player down.
sorry for the misunderstanding. i to thought that rummel totaly got away from there game in the second half, however i do think lafayette's halftime adjustments had a lot to do with that. great game and fun to watch.

yeh i was ball boy for the game against rummel today i saw everything upclose, i questioned alot of the penalties but the refs did the best they could and that is that. id also like to add that rummel i thought was a good team, i saw some good stuff from them the whole game, lots of fouls, but still some good stuff. but our varsity ended up playin there [but*s] off in the second half and it showed on the scoreboard. id also like to add mthat i saw some awesome playing by nick camel today, this was the first time ive seen him step up like he did and i was really amazed. varsity, everyone played great today, and i think that yall are gonna bring the title home so go get em in n.o.

I drove from Shreveport to see this game and it was well worth the trip. Congrats to LHS for the win. Now take it to Jesuit and beat them as well. Good luck in New Orleans.
I agree with goat that Rummel got away from their game in the second half and even more so toward the end of the game. Rummel seemed to be frustrated and lost their focus, cards began flying.

This was a quality high school match. There was some great individual skill showed off this game. Marco is one of the best players in the state. He ripped a direct from 35 yds off the post (what a shot), he displayed some great ball skills as well, it was sad to he him end his season (HS career) with a poor red card. Joey played good today. He drew about 8 fouls & got Rummel 2 cards. On the first goal he shield a player from the ball to allow his team mate to recieve the ball and score. #7 from Rummel had a good game in the back. #8 from Lafayette also played really well. But it was Lafayette's subs that were the real MVP's today. Overall really well played and coached game.

Here are my thought on the game.
About the officiating: since officials have taken a beating on the board, I wanted to start with them. I think they did a great job. There were a couple of questionable calls early, but after about ten minutes in, I think the center called an excellent game. I was watching the first PK call against Lafayette, but I didn't see it, if that makes sense. I was on the other end of the stadium and it just looked like bodies on the ground. I am inclined to think it was a good call, since he also issued a card. On Lafayette's second goal, I also thought that it was a goal kick. I think, though, that it was the AR that signaled corner. Maybe he saw something that I didn't. On the possible offside no call that led to Lafayette's PK, the player was on. I moved to that end of the stadium in the second half and saw the play pretty clearly. I can see how it could look offside from where the Rummel fans were. Also, it looked off, because they Lafayette player was all by himself. There was no other player within a mile of him. There was a Rummel defender on the near side of the field that was keeping the Lafayette player on. I thought that the PK call was good, too, especially since the precedent had been set in the first half. I am not calling it a makeup call, just a consistent call. Both players were on the ground and the Lafayette player was between the ball and the Rummel keeper. As the Lafayette player started to get up, the Rummel keeper tried to climb over him to get to the ball. Again, the AR made the initial call.
About the Game: Very well played game. Rummel is a talented team. Rummel absolutely dominated the first 15 minutes of the game. They controlled the ball, won most 50/50 balls, and broke up a ton of Lafayette's passes. Lafayette looked tight, but Rummel's aggressive play might have had something to do with that. The only offense Lafayette could muster was sending long balls to their forwards. Marco's shot was so close. I was scared. Really nice shot. From the 15 minute mark to about the 28 minute mark, I thought Lafayette settled down and the game pretty much evened out. It was during this time that Rummel got their PK (about the 22 minute mark). With about 12 remaining in the half, I thought Lafayette began to seize control of the game. Lafayette hit the crossbar with a shot and had a header that was going in, but the Rummel keeper was able to jump and push the ball just over the goal. It actually hit the crossbar on its way over.
It has been well documented that Lafayette dominated the second half. I don't, however, think that Coach Belfour made any adjustments. I think he just gave the team a speech that got them fired up to take the game from Rummel. Lafayette played the second half they way they have played all year. 4-4-2 with all of the players playing their usual positions.
To Rummel fans: You guys were out in force and at times I thought it was a Rummel home game. You have to be some of the most vocal fans I have ever been around. That said, there was a group of Rummel supporters that chose to taunt Lafayette players. I just don't think that kind of behavior belongs at the high school level.
To Rummel players: Man, you guys really lost your heads. I was watching the game with a former Rummel player and the word he chose to describe the end of the game was embarassing.
Anyway, all in all it was a good game until the last ten minutes. I thought both teams displayed excellent skill. For Lafayette, I thought that Nick Camel, Eric Ellander and Will Todd played their best games of the year. I really hate to single just those three guys out, but they really stood out to me. Nick began the season as a starter and lost his job when he was injured in December. He never got the starting job back, but he kept a good attitude and never quit working hard and it paid off yesterday.

We sat near the press box above the Rummel fans. Good game, but a rough one. Lots of cards (I'd like to know the final count; it was NOT just a couple). More cards to Rummel, but they committed more fouls. I wasn't sure why the red card was given, I must have looked away. If it was as has been described, good call.
The Raiders fans were very vocal, and very supportive of the team. This is a good thing. However, several of them began taunting the refs before the end of the first half. Sorry, but I thought the refs controlled very well what became a rough game. And the complainers never supported a call against their team. I know this is human nature, but I prefer honesty. For example, at one point right at midfield, a Rummel player jumped in front of an opponent (knees at his chest level), collided with him preventing him from going for the ball, and continued after the ball. When he got to it, a Laf. player collided with him. No call (which was consistent). On the second contact, the visiting fans began screaming at the ref. Sorry, which foul should he have called? On another point--the fans complained most of the game about St. Cyr. But he was fouled a half dozen times before a call was made, followed by a yellow. If the ref had called more strictly, as they asked, #2 would have had a double yellow before half-time. We didn't see St. Cyr commit many fouls--he simply out-ran and out-played the attackers (with the exception the play in which he slipped).
Again, my compliment was serious--Rummel's fans were very supportive of their team.
From our perspective, it looked as though Rummel dominated the entire first half. Lafayette had trouble stringing more than a couple of passes together before the Raiders took the ball. Different story in the 2nd half. Very impressive game from both teams. I second the MVP vote for the Laf subs. Great game by all, but these guys came in the game to play.

Of course, Lafayette's defense still prevented Rummel from completing an attack. And they seemed to be marking Joey well. Too bad that left room for the other attackers to break through.
Again, great game.

you have to give it to Lafayette's D they proved to be better than the almighty "best D" (rummel). Rummel's only goal came off of a PK. I know Rummel had some chances but they didn't have that many. Props to the LHS D.
