What would happen if soccer started using a scoring system similar to basketball. this is how it would go
2 points-goal inside the 18 3 points-goal outside of the 18 (now this is where it gets good) if a pk is awarded the shooter would take two shots each worth 1 point.
i think some positives would be, first it would decrease the affect a ref calling a pk would have on a game, second it would make the game a little more interesting with the different range of shots that could lead to more comebacks.
So what do yall think about the idea. (i do realize it is very unrealistic.)

I don't like it, a goal is a goal which equals one point no matter where it comes from. Why change it, the current system works just fine.

Apart from the above, what is to stop a defender from fouling in the box or something else that would cause a PK when the opponent might reclaim his two points. Also, would goals and assist leaders be counted by the number of goals or the number of points?

it basically would reward the defending team for taking a cheap shot on a player who would make an easy goal, which would decrease the sportmanship in the game. Which is not what soccer is about...
Soccer is also a fast moving sport and complications would come in from around the line... Do the feet have to be hehind the line or does the ball.. the ball is basically always moving so how can you tell the exact spot where the came from if it comes from a long threw ball... You would basically have to add 2 more refs one to watch each 18 yard markers... In my opinion its a bad idea and would be bad for the sport.. Soccer was created differently and should stay different and thats why people play it!

why copy a rule change that ruined basketball, and serves only o pander to uneducated fans who want to see high scores? what would follow... no more offsides? after all, if goals are exciting, let's make it easy to score more of them!
i think most true fans of soccer DON'T WANT high scoring games. goals are exciting BECAUSE they are hard to come by.

Fifa has already changed the rules once to increase the scores, they changed the offside rule, which used to be three people behind the ball not two, (the goalie counts as a person) I already think that some games are too high scoring, so why allow even more goals, or points.

guys i just want to point out that i agree with all of you and think this is a stupid idea and the game should never change. For some reason this "what if" idea popped into my head while i was watching a basketball game and thinking about soccer.

Can we as americans stop trying to radically change the game all of the time and instead work on improving our game?

An idea I read from a soccer magazine has to do with breaking ties. Seems that a European team (not having a great offense) would win by packing in the defense and play for shootouts where they prevailed more often than not. The proposal was to make the most # of corner kicks as the first tie-breaker. That awards the team pressing the action and it forces the team packing back the defense to come out and play offense, making for a more enjoyable game. How many times this year did you see a team playing not to lost rather than to win?

whoahwhoah, don't pretend you can lecture me.
The fact is that americans think they know more than the rest of the world when it comes to the rules of soccer. From watching the game on both sides, I still have yet to see that Louisianians even understand the current rules.
So what if it is a hypothetical. The point that he dreams of a different soccer game tells me that he has yet to understand the game today.

2 points-goal inside the 18 3 points-goal outside of the 18 (now this is where it gets good) if a pk is awarded the shooter would take two shots each worth 1 point. That may make for an interesting game for practice, just to encourage outside shooting and give the keeper more work, especially if a penalty is awarded. Instead of 2/3 points, it'd be 1/2. Played only on half a field. First team to 15. That'd be a fairly decent idea.

lecture was not my intention. All I am saying is that it was some random thought that just popped into his head. It would be a "crazy idea". And i think that everyone posting KNOWS that it would not work. I truly believe that rules of soccer are just fine and nothing should be changed...
