0-0 at end of regulation, 0-0 after first 10 min OT, 0-0 after second 10 minute over time, 0-0 after third 5 minute overtime and 0-0 after a fourth 5 minute over time. It came down to P.K. shootout after that and Franklin got the win 3-1 in the shootout to win the match 1-0. Details to follow after I collect my thoughts.

It was a great game... I would say Vandy had the ball 60% of the time just could not find the back of the net... Both keepers play execptionally well...
The Shootout both teams put the first one in 1-1... Vandy's was blocked and Franklin found the back of the net.... Vandy's was blocked again and Franklin found the back of the net to make it 3-1... Vandy's player came up with alot of pressure on him and had is kicked blocked and thats how the game ended

wow sounds like ben franklins keeper should be named mvp of this game. congratulations ben franklin That is who i would name MVP... He came up big many many times... He would cut off many longballs and such throughout the game, but mainly during 2nd half when vandy put it to Franklin... I felt Vandy was the better team watching them, just had problems puttin the ball in the net... They had a few hit the crossbar as well... Great game both teams... Congrats to Ben Franklin

The match was fairly even in the first half I thought. Both teams missed on a couple of oppertunities. One missed oppertunity for Vandebilt was when the keeper was caught completly out of goal but Vandy could not capitalize on the oppertunity. It was really back and forth the whole first half though. Second half I thought was completely dominated by Vandy. Vandy had the ball in possesion on Franklin's side of the field probably 80% of the second half. Franklin's keeper Fogarty was constanly under attack but he held up under the pressure and Vandy couldn't put it in the net. Franklin did have one good oppertunity in the second half when a player for Franklin had a chance for a one on one with Vandy's keeper but he slipped on the play and the ball got away from him. The first 2 overtimes Vandy kept up the pressure on Franklins end but couldn't find the net. The second 2 five minute overtimes were fairly evenly played going back and forth I thought. Franklin's keeper is the story of this game I thought and is the reason Franklin won the game. He was the real deal tonight and congrats to Franklin for pulling off the win. It's a shame they have to come down to a shootout, but we might have been out there all night. I want to congratulate both teams on an awesome match. Congrats to Franklin on their 1st State Championship.

Yo what up!
4:00 and the morning and I finally get to respond.
First off, all of your observations are right on. M, saw you there, good to see ya!
Franklin's keeper was the difference. But I have a lot to say about Vandy keeping.
Phillip Ledet, a keeper that I have previously coached, but mostly as a field player, did well for the entire run of play for Vandy, but for the shootout was replaced by the third team keeper, due to the supposed reason that the third team keeper was doing well on pks in practice for the entire week.
Neither keeper during play was really tested. All shots, of which Vandy had at least a 3 to 1 advantage , were mostly directly at the keeper. I don't recall any dive saves. Both Keepers did their job. Phillip, I know personally can play that kind of game. But Vandy decided during the shootout that their third was the best for the job.
Franklin's keeper faced more shots than phillip, and played a flawless game, yet he too was never really called upon to make that great save. If their was a good shot on goal, it was the franklin goalie that made the save, but to my memory, I don't recall a Vandy shot that was on goal and away from the keeper. Vandy had shots that hit the framework and some that went barely wide, but none on goal that demanded a reflex save from the Franklin goalie. Vandy had some good oppurtunities tonight, but they had to work for those oppurtunities. So when the time came to capitalise off of those rare oppurtunities, they were missing. I talked with an A licensed coach that I no need to identify, but he is a coach at the high school Division I level, and he and I agreed that the game was a lot of 1st touch kick up the field. Neither team established ball control possession. Vandy had the overall balance of possession, but it was of the uncontrolled variety. They were rarely ever to set their feet , and move forward under their own volition. It seemed like they were just trying to stave off the Franklin defense. Franklin showed quickness on counters, but as soon as they got into the attacking third, they would break down and not get a shot off. Vandy was better in this department. When they were able to sustain control, they would sometimes drive, but many times they wasted possession by attempting to go long after regaining possession. I thought that 25, Jarred Wooley was able to get the attack going on the topleft for Vandy, but Vandy failed to go exclusively towards Jarred. I think Vandy had some real good shot oppurtunities off of build up play, but Vandy couldn't sustain it, and too many times played wasted balls that played to Franklin's tactic of playing for a shootout. Franklin had few oppurtunities at goal. That doesn't mean they were without oppurtunities. One thing I thought Franklin did was get wider than Vandebilt. The field is a narrow field, and Vandy doesn't do a good job of getting wide. Franklin used it occasionally to get a counter going, but as soon as Frankling got into their offensive third, they broke down. I figure that was the way it was for most of the game for both teams. The exception was that Vandy successfully did it about 5 times, and Franklin maybe 2. All shot chances were then squandered. The game was fun and intense, but overall, not that great of a skilled game. Congrats to Ben Franklin. They did what they had to do.

in no way was franklin playing for a shootout.... the coach suggested a defensive formation, but that was denied by the captains and they went for some pressure by having two forwards, not one....they did not want a shootout at all.... also franklins keeper stopped 3 PKs in a row! thats incredible! it was a good game though, very well played by both teams... either team could have pulled off the victory.... i was very impressed with #4 on Vandy, he worked his butt off the entire game and ran non stop, he showed heart....

Congratulations, Ben Franklin.
Sometimes I think Fogarty's presence in goal is equally/more important than his skill, but, regardless, whatever was working for him worked last night.
Now, a question: When was the last time a school won both boys' and girls' soccer titles in the same year? Has it ever happened before in DivII? in DivI?

Here's the game article from the Houma Courier: www.houmatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040229/SPORTS/402290331/1032BOYS HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYOFFS DREAM DENIED: Ben Franklin ends Vandy’s three-peat quest in shootout By VANCE T. BARKER Courier Correspondent HOUMA -- Vandebilt Catholic’s bid for a third consecutive Class 4A state championship ended in disappointment Saturday night, as the Terriers fell to Ben Franklin 1-0 in a shootout. The victory gives the Falcons their first state championship in school history. "It’s a culmination of a dream since I started the program," said Ben Franklin coach Diego Gonzalez, the school’s coach since the soccer program’s inception in 1978. "I have a lot of praise for Vandebilt’s coach. I am really proud of my guys. They did everything I asked of them." The match was a duel between goalies Phillip Ledet of Vandebilt and Josh Fogarty of Ben Franklin (14-2-2), named the match’s MVP. Fogarty recorded 10 saves, and Ledet had five. The Terriers (27-8-1) outshot Ben Franklin, 15-8. "I just think they (the Terriers) gave their best," Vandebilt coach Doug Hamilton said. "I think we played well enough to win. We outshot them. A lot of credit goes to Ben Franklin." The Falcons scored on all three of their shootout opportunities. Carsten Becnel, Fabian Nehrbass and Kasey Contreary scored goals. Contreary’s sealed the victory. Jared Wooley scored for Vandebilt in the shootout. But John Lapeyre and David Vanheeswijk’s followed with missed attempts. After 80 minutes of regulation, the teams played two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden-death periods. Players from both sides were visibly exhausted heading into the shootout. "We didn’t want to go to a shootout," Hamilton said. "Ben Franklin’s goal keeper did well. Our boys and I are naturally disappointed, but Gonzalez deserved this win. "It’s the cycle of the game. You could ask the good Lord for quality shots, but he didn’t give them. I love these kids. When you spend this much time with the kids, good kids, you know what they’re capable of. I’d like to thank the seniors. I know that we played our best and that Ben Franklin played their best." Vandebilt was attempting to become the first school in state history to win three consecutive soccer titles. Jesuit also was attempting to achieve that feat in Division I but lost to Lafayette 1-0 on Saturday. Ben Franklin swept the Division II soccer champions. Its girls soccer team defeated St. Thomas More 2-1 on Friday.

Vandy's finishing was poor and during the shootout, their shots were weak. Some were shot right at the keeper.
