i have not been able to keep up with much of the season this year so who is everyone's front runners for Gatorade player of the year. gotta imagine Zayne is on that list considering how much his name pops up in every thread his team is in.

Who selects the Gatorade player? It seems that who or they always get it right every year which isn't an easy thing to do.

Who selects the Gatorade player? It seems that who or they always get it right every year which isn't an easy thing to do. Selected by Gatorade. Done in all 50 states for many sports(boys and girls). They not only look at athletic achievements, but also Academics and Character. My nephew was Gatorade Player of the Year for Basketball his junior and senior year at STM. Pretty good selection process and the way they go about it. Definitely a great honor to be selected.

It makes sense that if they are going to select someone and tag their brand name upon them, then they will conduct a thorough review of the player. I wonder if they search their social media accounts.

There is no argument Zane is one of the best, but I have to agree with Coach Ray. IMO, Connor Walmsley is the best player in the state.

Adrian Eaglin a forward at Beau Chene High School should also be considered as one of the best players in the state.

Winner for soccer is announced in June, lots of great players in this state whose parents/coaches don't come on this site. Gatorade won't risk their brand so I'd bet candidate's social media is also reviewed.
From the site playeroftheyear.gatorade.com/about
GATORADE STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR ONE WINNER FROM EACH OF THE TWELVE SPORTS IS CHOSEN FROM EACH STATE AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. The Gatorade State Player of the Year award winners are evaluated and selected on the basis of three criteria:
Athletic Excellence - Standout performance in their respective sport made at the high school, club, national or international levels of competition.
Academic Achievement - Review of GPA and class rank, as well as SAT and ACT scores, and academic honors distinctions.
Exemplary Character - Commitment to sportsmanship, character and community through membership and participation in positive activities.

My humble opinion- Zayne Zezulka. Dynamic player, outstanding student athlete and an even better young man off the field.
No disrespect to Walmsley or any of the other talented players around the state, but when you watch Zayne play- there’s no mistaking who the best player is on the field. I watched St Pauls play twice this year and everyone looked the same (highly skilled)- I couldn’t tell you who was who. When DTown played Lafayette, Jesuit, St Pauls, etc., there was no question in my mind. He was easily the most dynamic, dangerous player with the ball at his feet. Although he had a strong supporting cast at DTown, when necessary, Zayne created his own scoring opportunities by going 1v2 or 1v3- including against some of the best defensive lines in the state. Scoring 3 goals against Jesuit’s vaunted defense and goalie....are you kidding me? DTown didn’t track stats, but Zayne was easily in the mid 30s with goals scored and had a bunch of assists as well.
Good luck to the kids. What a tremendous honor!

Second best player I saw in any game was Garrett from Catholic BR vs Dutchtown. Walmsley and Torres from Jesuit are both superb. Northshore had a player that stood out to me. Wish I knew his name and number. A Spanish player and I think 16.

I personally haven’t seen him play but from a few coaches, whos opinions I value, have said nothing but great things about him. Hopefully I’ll see him Saturday night for all-star game.

I went and shook this young man's hand after the state championship game last night. I did that as much for what I saw after the heartbreaking loss as I did for what I saw from him on the pitch. He played an outstanding game, and after losing in overtime, this young man's head never went down, he consoled his teammates, and then stood in front of a camera for several minutes doing an interview. My words don't capture just how impressive his actions were. He's a very good player, but I'm not going to say he's the best player in the state. However, when you consider all 3 components of Gatorade's selection criteria, this young man is definitely a strong candidate in my book. Well done Carson Berry, and all the best to you.
