Question for you referee types: Big dude vs not-so-big dude on the run battling shoulder to shoulder for position on the ball. No elbows thrown, no extended arms, no yo mama insults, no tripping, just soccer. Only difference between the players is height & weight. Not-so-big dude loses and goes down cursing his own DNA. Big dude wins the ball. Foul on big dude or fair play?

Too many times people think just because someone goes down they got fouled. Not always the case.

Too many times people think just because someone goes down they got fouled. Not always the case. "people" or referees? In my experience, it's the refs (haha, I know you're people too) who are too quick to fault the larger player in the scenario above. Not being ugly or disrespectful, just raising the question/issue. Club, HS, college, and beyond, it's too often the default, lazy call in my opinion. The dynamics of a size difference makes it easy to get it wrong and all too often it's to the detriment of the larger player.

I tell coaches all the time, just because he's bigger doesn't mean it's a foul.

A reminder, though, that high school has a higher bar in place for this: at club level, this is just physics - in school, where seniors can be playing against sixth graders, excessive force is more of an issue. Just how much of a shoulder charge is needed to win the ball versus knocking someone half your size across a gravel running track

I'd like to know more about this "higher bar". Is there really actual guidance you're referring to? If a sixth grader is playing Varsity soccer, you really call the game differently?
I'm not talking about excessive force, see above. I'm talking about playing the game of soccer as per the laws of it. They don't mention sixth graders or big versus little.

I have seen too many referees favor the smaller player. It's very poor refereeing.

Size doesn’t matter when play is fair. Period. End of story. Question asked and answered. Time to move on.
