So....the administrators aren't fans I see. Sounds like grounds for a good debate if nothing else. Why not promote all LA soccer? Looks pretty fun on their Facebook page.

Well considering I was apart of the efforts to create the Collegiate Soccer League of Louisiana, which allowed the Louisiana club teams a chance to play more locally, rather than travel to Texas to play. I'd say I was a big enough fan. However, LSU is 100% where LA soccer players give up on trying to further develop as players. LSU club team is good, they have fun, they win, but those boys have hung up their competitive boots.

It's not that administrators aren't fans, but there is a ton of talent in Louisiana that could have gone on to play NCAA soccer or beyond but instead went to LSU for the culture, friends, closeness to home, whatever. In regards to LSU club soccer, you can follow along through FB on their FB page as well as Collegiate Soccer League of Louisiana. LSU won this past league (Fall '19) by beating Tulane in the final (3rd year in a row these two teams have met in the state finals). Both clubs went on to Dallas to represent Louisiana at the Region IV South Tournament. LSU went to the Regional Quarterfinal where they lost to Texas St 2-1. They then accepted a bid to the National tournament where they went 1-2 in Group Play and failed to get out of the bracket. They lost to Penn(2-0) and Virgina Tech (2-0) before beating Colorado College (3-1). docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19nPc5d6RDSXeelNN29XzuSrkpee-j0ISg-8coXRCAQ4/edit#gid=0Tulane moved all the way to the Region IV Semi-Finals and took then #1 Texas Tech to penalties where they lost the shootout 4-3. play.nirsa.net/soccer/national-championship-results/

So the "team is good, they have fun, and they win." Sounds like a dream. And you helped form the league they now play in. So why not support them on this site?

I apologize. Just a shame to see talented players lose their passion for wanting to go further in the game.

Now imagine if those superstars continued on as referees...

Now imagine if those superstars continued on as referees... My brief stint as a ref in a preseason JV game, pretty much a scrimmage, between EJ and Bro Martin last year was enough to make me not want to be a ref. Parents are delusional.

Tons of ways to deal with that. Ignoring them is a good start. They make good quotes of the game sometimes. You don’t even have to address them at all - get the site admin to do it. Or coach in a club game. Spectators are the biggest issue that don’t need to be an issue at all, because all methods of dealing with them are indirect. A referee just needs to avoid the temptation of response and have the person removed at the stoppage.

And what are the alternatives? Thanks to the dominance of football and the law of Title IX, opportunities for men to play collegiate soccer are few and far between. We've had a few Louisiana players who have gone on and played collegiately or professionally. The vast majority of HS players will never get to that level. And even those who have the opportunity to play collegiately would likely be making major sacrifices in terms of location, school quality, finances, etc. if they choose to make collegiate soccer their #1 priority. The kids who play in front of a few thousand people in a HS state title game will probably never see a crowd that size again in the rest of their soccer careers. I doubt many of the kids on LSU's club team are passing up full rides at prestigious schools or real shots at the pros. Even in MLS the minimum salary is $56k. Plenty of new college grads make close to that. I can't blame anyone for going to LSU and playing club soccer when I think about how few options they actually have. You're right. I shouldn't knock them. I apologize. Just a shame to see talented players lose their passion for wanting to go further in the game. I get it, but the "further" just isn't that great for the vast majority of these players.

In all seriousness, while it was fun to get a taste of how parents perceive their perfect children to be, I have considered jumping into the ref game.

I get it, but the "further" just isn't that great for the vast majority of these players. Will never knock a kid for choosing a safer career path. Too many variables that go into why things are the way they are. Still won't change my mind that some top LA prospects just lose the passion. That needs to change.

I think a lot of these kids would still have the passion if they had the same chances a football or basketball player gets.
I applaud what you've done in supporting the post-HS game in Louisiana. Unfortunately, it's a murky path forward. Who knows where college soccer is headed in the next few years? I wouldn't be surprised if non-revenue college sports get destroyed if the football & basketball stars are getting money in "endorsement" deals (aka money from boosters).

I worked for 2 years with the UNO club to try and convince the administration that they could quickly jump to the front of the line by investing in their Soccer programming. I will say that UNO, LSU and Tulane were full of local players who reported symptoms of serious burn-out from Club soccer. I wish there were more infrastructure available for players to continue to play without having to worry about whether its semi-pro or whatever...just more "love of the game" stuff.

Oftentimes, the same teams qualify over and over so most of our club players don't even get the opportunity to play for more than their parents on the sidelines, and maybe a few school supporters.

Why affix your desire to continue to play soccer with a school? Why do Americans feel they need to Americanize soccer? Why not do what all other countries do, start a club that is not affiliated with schools that don’t give a zhit about soccer?
