I think it is evident that my choice for best goalkeepers is Gordon Banks. That thread on the best players was so much fun, the way this board is supposed to be, how about doing the same for GK's... The floor is open for nominations for best Keepers past and present...

Recber Rustu was the greatest when he played for FCB. Gianluigi Buffon is also great when he plays for Italy.

My favorite was always Bodo Illgner, he's retired now.
As far as flair goes, and we all know goalies seem to dance to the beat of a different drummer, Campos was great. He's a little man with a huge presence on the field, and usually with an even louder jersey.

Ghandi--great choice, and as you are a goalkeeper, great player to emulate. Recber is awesome--I had really hoped he would end up at Arsenal--oh well.
How about Shep Messing? Messing was the first mainstream American Soccer star after Kyle Rote Jr, and was a fixture in the nets for the US national team and the New York Cosmos in the 70's and 80's.
Ghandi--get on Amazon.com and look for a book entitled "The Education of an American Soccer Player", written by Messing. It is a well written book on his growing up with the sport, his training methods, and his time with the Cosmos, National team, and going to the Olympics. The language in the book is a little rough at times, but its funny, insightful, inspiring and a good read. I recommend this to all young keepers( and all soccer players) to read to see what Messing put himself through to achieve, and to help bring Soccer into the forefront in this country for our youth to play.

lhs, yes he retired a couple of years ago, if my memory serves me ccorectly, however he is still "the property" of RealMadrid. He is listed as a free transfer on their website. I just thougt he was the bomb when I was in high school, he was so scrappy and made saves that you never thought a keeper could make.

I've always thought that Edwin van der Sar was an incredible goalkeeper that never gets the credit he deserves...From what I've read though Lev Yashin was the greatest keeper ever...If my memory serves me correctly he blocked something like over 100 PKs throughout his career
