I know it’s the boys forum but hear me out for a second. We need more referees in every area. We need people who already know the game, new people, adults, millennials, boomers. Seniors - this doesn’t have to be your last game, a lot of you are in great shape and already have a good baseline knowledge.
Start off in your area. Work tournaments and travel. Work hard and study harder. The more you put into it the easier it gets. Learn with the kids then come do HS games next year or the next. Especially if you thought you could do better than the guys that did your games this year. (Same reason why I started in 1996). There isn’t a day that goes by that I regret it. Not once in just under 10,000 games.
Work when you are available. And most areas have mentors at no cost to the referee.
The website is learning.ussoccer.com/referees
There is an upcoming clinic March 1 in Houma and Hammond (better sign up today) and another clinic in Lake Charles on March 8. There are more upcoming clinics listed but these are the next two weekends. You’ll make that money back in just a couple of games.
The game needs you.

Travel to tournaments in other areas, work a couple games. Get your hotel comp’d and get fed for free and get paid for your games you work. Great for soccer dads traveling with their kids, and you can request their game time slot off and still watch your kids games.

I have been doing tournaments and matches for the past couple of years. It is a great way to pay for my son's travel fees when I can work a few games at the tournament and pay for the room and food.
