I was looking forward to this game b/c we all know how technical Japan plays and how they are a good group of players that as a SUM or their parts are a tough opponent. They do not have flashy players. They never look to be out of control. They play simple soccer and they are organized. They are technical with their touch and often times put you under immediate pressure after they lose the ball with their front 3 of a 433. It was a good test for the USMNT to play against and one that they did not pass...even remotely. And that goes for Gregg as well. I don't care if he's trying things out or not... this close to the World Cup... you have to figure out ways to win games with the personnel you have.

Any field player on the pitch today, had their stock reduced. Sargent and Morris coming on at the half did not benefit. Ferreira was not impressive. Neither was Mallick Tillman. Every player seemed to turn over the ball. All of a sudden, the program is in a mess. If we cannot play outside the USA, we are going to get trounced. The defensive middle was atrocious this morning. Pulisic was lucky to not be involved this morning. Pefok, Ream, and even Brooks all had their stock go up today, because they were not part of this morning's fiasco.

What an absolutely miserable performance from literally every player on the field.

I'm wondering if Gregg tries to line up a closed door scrimmage while in Qatar. Perhaps he already has. There's risk, of course, but my gosh...

What an absolutely miserable performance from literally every player on the field. i think we all should just mentally prepare for the headline on November 25th saying “US bow out of World Cup after second loss in group stage” It really does seem like the players are "out" on GB, which I don't blame them for. Besides Aaronson, there doesn't seem to be a very high work rate from any of the players. Numerous times, we saw our CM's and Dest (because let's be honest, Vines got up the field literally to attack one time, and that was right out of the gate in the second half) jogging casually back after losing the ball, as we're getting rammed on the counter time after time throughout the game. Reggie Cannon and Aaron Long are bad. How are they still seeing minutes? Sam Vines literally played the way you expect an old man to play on Sundays (i.e. the way I play now). "As long as I play the ball backwards and don't lose it, I'm helping the team." Why don't we just play Tyler Adams at CB and be done with the controversy? Hell, he receives the ball deep between the 2 CB's like he's Busquets anyway, and we know he's a better defender than he is distributor (at least in my opinion). That would free up our ability to use one more of our guys that are likely to see bench time (Weah, Aaronson, Musah, Reyna) in the middle. OR... hear me out... we're getting crazy now... why don't we slide one of those above mentioned 4 players at CF since we have no real CF that is better technically/tactically than those players? I'm tired of seeing Sargent, Pepi, Ferreira game in and game out and not score... We could line up something like this. GK - Turner LB - Robinson CB - Zimmerman CB - Adams RB - Dest CM - McKennie CM - Reyna CM - Musah LW - Pulisic CF - Weah RW - Aaronson WE HAVE TO PUT OUR BEST PLAYERS ON THE FIELD.

Don't be surprised if we see Weah as the 9 at some point in the WC.

From reading lots of comments on many chatrooms across the internet, the most common opinion I have seen is that people feel that Greg Berhalter is too adamant in playing his 433 system and not adapting a system to the players he does have. From the moment around the nations cup, it has been my goal and to document all of our beliefs in this chatroom and put them down on record so as that we can go back and read them at any time and see what predictions we had that came true and which did not. Even during the Nations league, it seemed to me that our weakness continues to be in generating shot opportunities. At time we had hot streaks, but over the long haul, it seems that we continue to suffer from this weakness. I believe if we all go back in this chatroom and review our previous comments, that we will be assured that what we said then is the same as what our problems are now. Unlike many in these chatrooms, I do not think it will make a difference who we have at the center forward position, because we lack the ability to get our forwards the ball consistently. I believe this may be the result of playing a 3 midfield system and relying on defensive wingers to get up the field. It has also been noted that Berhalter has never been a coach to generate a successful attack and that he was fired from European coaching jobs because of it. I have said we have the capability to win the World Cup, but now I do not believe we will even advance out of our group with the way our team is playing now. Maybe it is a ruse. Maybe we are doing a rope a dope. That is what is so fun about watching World Cups. Before the 2002 World Cup, I felt the same way after a dismal qualifying campaign. And then around 4Am at O'Flagherty's (no longer there because of Hurricane Katrina) in the French Quarter, I watched us upset Portugal enroute to a quarterfinal finish. I am not confident one way or the other what will happen, but I believe we are going down in flames, but yet have hope that we rise to the occasion and surprise like they did when we beat Mexico and won the Nations League and Gold Cups. Sure Qualification was a mess, but we qualified and truly, that was all we needed to do. Finishing first does not win you anything over finishing second or third. Now, can we make history and perform our best? I am not so sure if this is that cup. But, we are young, and with us hosting in 2026, maybe we can make history then.

We are a joke. And it starts with coaching and lineups.
The players don’t believe and are willing to lose to prove their point. We have plenty of players in US that could make GB look good.
We have a mostly European group that believes they are above the American style of play. However, we will never be good enough to get by only on talent. We must be a team that outworks others. We have lost that.

We have a mostly European group that believes they are above the American style of play. However, we will never be good enough to get by only on talent. We must be a team that outworks others. We have lost that. I have spoken about this sentiment that you bring up before in how in the last World Cup qualifying, because of politics going on at the time, that we as a nation and fans of soccer, lost our American pride. It is still missing today. For those of you too young to remember the miracle on Ice, I wish you could have felt the pride then and compare it to what it was now. Politically, we had problems in those days with the Iran hostage situation and gas shortages, but it was the Lake Placid Miracle on Ice that changed a lot of that animosity into a spirit that infused this country with a feeling that made us stronger than ever. I believe our soccer team could do that too if we just had the right coaching like what was done in that 1980 winter olympics. The coached picked the right team, not necessarily the best players and drilled and drove them into weariness from training until the moment came that he had to face the powerful Communist who only posed as amateurs, but were in fact the best hockey players in the world. The Russians were professionals, but since communism didn't allow professional sports to exist then, it took the freedom of the USA to show them how pride and free spirit always triumphs over tyranny of the collective. It was not so much that they beat the Soviets, but it was how they faced that fear and triumphed in their play. It was the most glorious thing I have ever witnessed in sport and it was brilliantly play called by Al Michaels in a time when Cable and National Tv sports were finding their mark on the national landscape in huge numbers. The USMNT can make that sort of an impact if we can advance in a tournament and find that inner strength to accomplish more than we ever thought possible, but it will never happen if we continue to have an Anti-American attitude.

I just hope everyone here understands that this is how US Soccer is set up. Very controlled, calculated gate keeping. The franchise sports model that Americans are happy to blindly accept as the system we must support is there to protect the investors and nothing more.
