It's a warm, humid day today, temperatures in the 70's and hazy. We have an athletic trainer on site, Phil Shaw, who is the best in the land. In the hospitality room there are donuts, jambalaya, rolls, fruit, cookies, and drinks. The concession stand is serving the finest hot dogs Sams can provide along with popcorn, nachos, and other common concession items. Most referees seem to be wearing the ugly green kits with a couple rebelling and wearing yellow. Every team has a custom flag/poster made for them with paint by the skilled artists on the Ouachita JV Team, some may call them the collective Picassos of our time. If they could paint that way on the soccer field, they may win a few games today.
West Monroe defeats West Ouachita 7-0. Goals by Legoman, Rocky x2, Twinkletoes x4.

West Ouachita 3 vs Northwood A 0 WO Goals: White Lightning x2, The Red Rocket x1
This game has resembled trench warfare in World War 1. A war of attrition akin to trench warfare. We have seen megs, ninja headbands, and some of the most discombobulated soccer you've ever seen. Both team's game plans seem to be to kick the ball as far as they can (about 10 yards up the field) until someone eventually earns enough territory to make one of their 10 yard passes a through ball. Two goals scored this way on the breakaway by West Ouachita's Seth "White Lightning" Dowdy. The Goalie for West Ouachita, Will "Goldie Locks" Hillman has been superb today with multiple saves in both of his games. He is also an early candidate for the "Best Hair Award." Oh No! On the final play of the game, the Northwood goalie, Kaden "Lucky Charms" Wallace misjudges a throughball, as he dives for it he accidentally jumps OVER the ball and Gavin "The Red Rocket" Davis puts it away for WO's 3rd. A hard fought game by both teams ends Wo-3, Northwood- 0.

Sterlington A -1 vs Captain Shreve A -0 Goal by Cam "Delantero" Johnson
We begin one of our premier matches of the day. Sterlington in all white and Shreve in all black. Early aggression by a plucky Sterlington team led by John Nix. Shreve are our defending champions of the JV World Cup! Early clash of bodies, one of the players involved asks for a sub, but the coach refuses and tells him to get tougher. Sterlington trying a steady dose of through balls hoping that Cam "delantero" Johnson can get on the end of one. Shreve with some sustained possession around the Sterlington box, some small, technical players there, such as the "One-armed bandit", but can't get through the White Wall. Sterlington With a flying Knee 20 yards out to defend a ball, sending it out for a Shreve corner, defended well by the Panthers. Hunter the Hocky Player hits a 20 yard volley off the crossbar. Close! Player for Shreve hacked down by the Sterlington defender, great show of sportsmanship as he helps him up...no foul, the ensuing throwin leads to a defensive Bicycle Kick clearance by Despacito! This game features top nicknames such as "Hunter the Hockey Player", "Benchwarmer 1 and 2", "El Ardillo Loco", and "The Big Burly Stud." Shreve best offense seems to come from throw-ins by #2 "Thing 2" for Shreve. #22 "The Brewer" with a volley over the bar. Shreve trying to get #27 "The Slapper" through on through balls, but he is about 4 foot 7 and keeps getting crowded out by the massive center backs for Sterlington, true to his name, he flails about as he runs through and caught some cheek on that last one. Halftime: Scoreless.
The second half of this game has started off with some hard hits. Both coaches were seen at halftime hauling their teams to the corners to give them the hair dryer treatment. Seems like they have responded with an increased level of physical play. The most creative and technical player on the field seems to be "The one-armed Bandit for Shreve, but he still can't find a way to unlock the defense. These boys are playing HARD, every ball is met with body contact, there are no freebies, there is no time on this field, only pain. The referees have called one foul in this second half, "Let the Boys Play" is the overarching vibe coming from them. This is the most physical game I've seen since the Ruston/Destrehan state championship game in football last night. Massive clearance from Sterlington's "El Mehicano". He kicked the ball from his own 40 yard line and put it into the stands behind his own goal. The ensuing corner kick is adamantly punched away by the Panther keeper, "El Ardillo Loco." GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Finally, a breakthrough!!! Delantero put through, megs his defender as he cuts inside, and puts the shot in the top right corner!!! That could be a huge goal for the results of this group. The One-Armed Bandit ALMOST breaks through for the equalizer, but he is called offside by the width of the giant cast on his right arm. He's been everywhere today. Dribbles 3 Panthers and puts his teammate in for a shot, but he tamely chips it over the bar... "White Chocolate" for Sterlington watched some WWE last night as he body slams "The Dominican" for Shreve in the box. No call!???!? Play on! One-Armed Bandit in! Oh my gosh!! Imagine putting a stick into someone's bicycle tire. Okay, that is what the Sterlington defender did as he tried to take his shot from 12 yards out. No call. Play on!! The goalkeeper for shreve makes a save on side of the box, tight-ropes the line and then screams at his teammates "Get up the field, stop watching me!", then proceeds to chunk the ball up the field. Let's see if this is the spark that the Gators need to bite back! They earn a corner from the play...corner goes out for a goal kick, touched by no one.
Game! The Panthers hold on to make a massive statement in this group.

Pineville B vs Sterlington B
This game starts out with Pineville in white and Sterlington in a harlequin blue and black. Coach Gary "The Titanic" Comeaux leading this Rebel team today, hoping their performance can lead to his succession as LHSSCA President one day. Both teams getting early breakaways, but tactical defending, uncalled fouls, and shot passes out of bounds have stopped the breakthrough. UNTIL NOW, WHAT A GOAL. The "JV Bandit" gets his shoulder inside of his man, and slots the ball home low and into the corner! 1-0 Panthers! Pineville have had more of the ball, but Sterlington makes the most of their chances. Great nicknames on display here, Pineville B with names such as "Chuncky Monkey", "no way", "Peanut Butter", and "Jelly". Sterlington B with the "Big Country", "Jarbles", and "He Hate Me." Sterlington's best method of defending is with double-armed shoves to the bodies of the Pineville players. One of those leads to a free kick from the top of the D, big chance here for Pineville, "Rubyyyyyy" does a Messi stance over the free kick, but softly places it through the field goal uprights. In the 80 degree weather we have, one boy from Pineville, "Captain America" is boldly wearing a bright blue Cookie Monster beanie. Another Goal! This was a classic JV World Cup goal, the Panther player takes a shot which is going off target, but the Pineville keeper "The Legend" scoops the ball over his right shoulder and into the back of his own net. Coach Gary Comeaux takes off his glasses and wipes them in consternation. The ensuing kickoff features a a rabona backheel by Pineville's RUBBBYYYYYYYY. "Big Country" from Sterlington has flowing hair and American flag socks clears the ball out one more time, and that's half time. Halftime features a wild Corgi running around on one of the grass fields in play today. We kick off the second half with a Sterlington kick. Pineville gain control and clearly the halftime message from Gary Comeaux was to calm down and possess the ball a bit more. This inevitably leads to a dangerous turnover, but the chance is saved by a bigggg tackle from Pineville's "Peanut Butter", and "Jelly" cleans up the scraps and send it the other way. Pineville's defender attempts a two-footer from behind, but only succeeds in scissoring his own player, luckily no one is hurt on the play. This game has devolved into a defensive struggle, where most of the defense is being played by the team with the ball. Pineville's "Peanut Butter" goes from Creamy to Crunchy in a matter of seconds as he gets away with a 3-limbed tackle stopping a Sterlington attack. Sterlington gets a chance with a flying knee shot from 20 out which the "Legend" just claws out of the top corner. You'll never see quality knees such as this at any other level of soccer. Goallllllllll!!!! "El Otro Mehicano" receives the ball from a scrum at the top of the box and places the ball in the upper right hand corner, smoothly sailing over "The Legend's" outstretched arm. 3-0 Sterlington. Pineville just can't get final third penetration. TRIPLE SAVE by "The Legend"!! Sterlington sends a cross in, it's kneed (again) towards goal, saved, rebound, save, rebound 3, save. Unbelievable, may just be the redemption "The Legend" needed. A Sterlington sub just appeared on the sideline with a large bag of Chick Fila, and he is feeding it to the bench players who are clamoring for the food and eating it baby bird style. These kids are clearly hungry for more. And we have our first illegal throw of the day, way under the amount you'd expect. Over/under is set at 5.5 for the day. Oof, and "The Legend" un-redeems himself as Sterlington takes a slow, rolling shot from 25 out, and the Pineville keeper spreads his legs wide and bends down to scoop up the ball, but he scoops too soon and the ball hits the back of his hands and squeaks through, it's going agonizingly slow towards the line as the keeper puts his hands on his head, then runs back to his own goal to save the shot, but he can't get there in time. 4-0 Panthers. Game.

Holy Savior Menard 2 vs Sterlington A 4 This has been a wild first half. All of my PA announcers have left me to go referee games, so I am left on a hot mic and saving my write ups for half and full time. The Holy Savior Menard Eagles are wearing Black, White, and Gold kits with the Sterlington Panthers in all White with blue numbers. If you looked at a heat map of the first half, it would show an Eagle shaped red blur in the Sterlington defensive half. But don't let that fool you, the score at half-time is 3-1 Panthers after multiple devastating breakaway scores, and some strong defensive play at the back. The first goal was scored by the ever-spritely Ginga Ninja for Sterlington, and boy was he not done. Menard answered back, with a wonder goal scored by Preston "The Pee Man" leaping through the air and smashing the ball into the back of the net with his shin, another excellent JV World Cup technique. However, the parity did not last long, as Sterlington earned a corner on yet another breakaway and Delantero smashed the low cross into the back of the net past "The Brick Wall." Finally, the 3rd goal was the best I've seen this season, with the Ginja Ninja from Sterlington performing an overhead kick to deliver the ball into the box for a streaking runner to obliterate the ball into the back of the net with his head. I hope we got that one on film. The second was interesting for the first five minutes. First, Menard brings one back with #36 "Big Brain" showing great strength shrugging off defenders from Sterlington left and right and finishing past the keeper. But just when the Eagles seemed to be getting a foothold in the game, the Sterlington Panthers come right back with a dagger as #2 Delantero gets his second of the game. I also discovered why fans kept screaming at me in disdain, rage, and anguish every time I said that the Griffins had done something...I was informed that the Griffins were not playing, and it was the Eagles, which I fixed to the applause of the flock of Eagle faithful. I felt bad for confusing two mythical flying creatures.

And we have our first trophy awarded of the day. The Best Hair Award goes to "Peanut Butter" and "Jelly" of Pineville B for their tandem submission for best hair, which fits with the nicknames they chose.

West Ouachita vs Dutchtown B A scrappy game, with Dutchtown trying to maintain some quality, but the scrappy Chiefs are making it difficult for them in their third game of the day. Stalwart defending, yet they couldn't stop #44 "Rocket Foot" from splitting their defense. He still had a lot to do, but true to his name, he smashes the ball into the back of the net. Get that man into the shot power contest!! At halftime, it's 1-0 Griffins. The second half continues with the trend of a smooth Griffin attack subdued by a vivacious Chief defense. History repeats itself on this trail of tears however, as #44 "Rocket Foot scores yet AGAIN with a rifled shot into the top right corner. The runner-up for the Best Hair Award, "Goldilocks" has had a great tournament in goal for the Chiefs, but he couldn't get to those. Griffin B nicknames have some interesting submissions such as "Free Lil Seb", "Munch", and "Joey Kangaroo." But it was "Rocket Foot" that stole the show and the hearts with his goals.

Dutchtown A vs Sterlington B
On paper this game looks like the Griffins would be strong favorites. However, much like Morocco, the Panthers are proving a plucky opponent for all comers. Dutchtown opened up the game controlling the ball, playing a classic Pep Guardiola 4-3-3, but despite all their tiki-taka, it's a direct, long ball that unlocks the Sterlington defense with #24 "Slim Shady" slotting the ball home. This starts a Man City-esque scoring deluge, right? NO! Sterlington answers with a steal and the player earns a foul. #4 "El Diablo" steps over the ball and kicks it as hard as his skinny legs can muster, and the ball drops over the outstretched arm of the keeper and under the bar for a goal. 1-1!!! Halftime! At halftime, the Dutchtown coach, "Pep" is seen wildly gesticulating at his players. Let's see if he can get a response from them in the second half. Wow, Dutchtown scores the go ahead goal! Well, if we are being honest it was a shot that was probably off target but took a wicket deflection off a Sterlington defender "Jarbles" and into the net. It takes something special or extremely unlucky to defeat "La Fantasma" in the net for the Panthers, and that was it. OH MY God, three extremely incredible upper 90 saves by the Panther Keeper, the latest out for a corner. Unfortunately, the corner leads to a scrum that leads to a goal by "Lil Sebs" for Dutchtown. Final 4-1 Dutchtown A as the Panthers B just ran out of gas.

Pineville A -3 vs Shreve B -1
Pineville in their sweet Black and grey stripes vs Shreve in their White jerseys, black shorts, and green numbers.
Pineville dominating early, but against the run of play, and the evidence of everyone's eyes except for the referee, the Gators get a penalty! SAVED BY "The Great Wall of China!!!" Pineville answers down the other end, and a goal glances of the head of #26 "Meow Kitten". Pineville quickly scores again with a shot from #3, "La Biblioteca." This game looks like it's getting out of hand quick. But once again, you can never expect the expected in the JV World Cup. The ball squeezes through the middle of the Pineville defense and #10, a bowling ball named "White" (misleading), powers through the defenders and slots it home past the keeper! 2-1 and the Gators are back in this game! The score remains the same until the half! The Pineville A team has some of the best nicknames around, featuring names such as "The Italian Stallion, "The Fighting Ballerina", "The Great Wall of China" (not misleading), and "Meow Kitten". Good names for the Shreve B Gators include the "Archduke Franz" and "Yoake the Pope".

Semi-finals! The semi-finals match ups are: Dutchtown A vs Sterlington A and West Monroe vs OCS.
I'll give you highlights from each match as I see them unfold. #2 for Sterlington, "Delantero" does some strong work to get past the keeper and the defender, but in an amazing defensive effort the Dutchtown right back comes flying across the line making a goal-line clearance just before the ball entered the goal!
What a Goal from Coach Pep's flying Griffins! A clearance goes awry for the Panthers and a Griffin winger latches onto it, drives down the wing and sends in a scintillating ball that sizzles across the turf between the back line and the keeper who all can't quite reach it with their outstretched toes, but "Blanco" sprints in at the back post and slides to knock the ball into the back of the net! 1-0 Dutchtown!
On the grass field far away, a large shout goes up from West Monroe as the Rebels revel in a goal against the OCS Eagles. 1-0 Rebels!
Another shout from the grass field, but this time it was more of a screech, as the OCS Eagles tie up the game 1-1!
Shocking development in the Sterlington/Dutchtown match, as the a Griffin player takes his nickname too seriously. Red card for "Mad Max". The Griffins will be playing down a man the remainder of this semi-final. Can Pep adjust?
Halftime. OCS 1 - 1 West Monroe; Sterlington 0 - 1 Dutchtown

Second Half updates for Semi-Finals Panthers with a lot of pressure and forcing a lot of good saves by Dutchtown's keeper. Now they have a corner cleared off the line. Griffins will not give in!
Big save on the other field by West Monroe's keeper to keep that game level.
We have our second foul throw of the day in a semi-final match committed by Sterlington's "White Chocolate". The ensuing throw for Dutchtown leads to a scissor kick attempt that is destined for the back of the net except for a Sterlington defender equaling the lateral maneuverability of his opponent while launching his body into the air to block the shot.
OCS scores a second on the grass field! 2-1 Eagles.
Sterlington just can't find the extra man, they look a tired bunch who have worked hard all day. A poor tackle leads to a Dutchtown penalty kick. Will this seal the game with 5 minutes left? HE SENT IT INTO ORBIT. A Harry Kane-esque penalty kick. The Panthers still have life, yet are not moving more men forward, still in their 4-4-2.
GOAL, the dagger! Sasquatch scores what surely must be the winner for Dutchtown after a long ball. Looks like Pep has been taking lessons from Sean Dyche!
Semi-final results: West Monroe 1 - OCS 2 ; Sterlington 0 - 2 Dutchtown.
The final will be between OCS and Dutchtown.

The final is tied 1-1 between Dutchtown and OCS. Both teams clearly have emptied all they have in their tanks. Now we will go to kicks from the mark, or PKs for those of you who haven't updated your referee vocabulary for many years now. Up first for the Eagles is P. Goggins, a long, lanky lad. He takes a 2 step run-up, and strikes the ball low and hard down the middle. The Dutchtown keeper dives away from it. Sebs steps up for the Griffins, 2 step run-up and he sends it 3 feet off the ground past the keeper! 1-1 Minnie shoots for the Eagles and we have our third penalty in a row down the middle and scored. The Quadfather steps up for Dutchtown, puts on his Ronaldo stance, but it's a bad time to be a Ronaldo fan, and the keeper SAVES his penalty diving to his left! 2-1 OCS Chandler 2.0 calmly passes his shot into the corner, and the Eagles are trying to pull away. Blanco has had a great game for the Griffins, he takes 2 steps and puts the ball into the side netting. 3-2 OCS. The Griffins need a save soon as Polk Salad gets a 6 step run-up...SAVED! Keeper knee slides to his left to stop the slow ground shot. The Rizzlord steps up for the Griffins, he looks to his right and slots it left while the keeper goes careening the other way! 3-3 Tie! Stewie is trying to keep the pressure on the Griffins, and he does! Another low shot to the keeper's left, but this time he guesses the wrong way. Griffins have to make theirs to stay in it. Sasquatch is the man on the spot for Dutchtown. He Shoots! He Scores! The keeper gets a finger on it but can't get enough of it to steer it away from frame. 5-5. Sudden death. Big Vu the Bionic Leg steps up to take OCS' 6th. He needs to make this to force Dutchtown into a make. The left leg is fully mechanized. No flesh to be seen. Wow, bad height for the shot and the keeper gets two hands to it, but the ball goes off of the post and into the goal! CBum sets the ball down on the spot but the keeper comes up and gets in his head. He has to make this. Keeper guesses the right way but the ball is into the side netting to tie it up again! Brobotto continues our journey through these kicks. A 17 step runup, with a hop, a skip, and a jump, and he takes the sneaky 3 point shot over the bar. Advantage Griffins. Snikabubu SCORES WITH TOO MUCH POWER FOR THE KEEPER TO STOP. HE BLASTS THE KEEPER INTO THE NET. GRIFFINS WIN!!!!!!!!

My players loved the great weekend. The atmosphere and playing environment you guys have created over there is just great and the boys that will be able to return next year are already thinking about it. My parents were highly complimentary about the entire operation and though the drive was far for us, they have all agreed it was well worth the experience. Thanks for the unique tournament you provide and I look forward to signing my guys up again. Two years in a row for my program and this tournament is becoming staple in our younger teams schedules. Great stuff.
