In honor of the upcoming Senior Day, here is some free intel on the SSA Doves for all you preps spies. I’ll leave the uniform numbers off to make y’all guess who’s who while studying game film (yeah, I’m talkin’ to you Coach Al & Coach Kyle). Thank you CKD and DME for giving me the idea for this preview since there is zero press covering soccer in Louisiana other than us prepsters.

THE 2022-23 FIGHTING DOVES

Coach Glen “Benji” Benjamin--Benji played on the Trinidad National team at the 1991 FIFA U20 World Youth Championship and was an NAIA All-American at the University of Mobile. He has been coaching kids of all ages on the northshore for over a decade. In his second year at SSA.

SENIORS

Sydney Guice, Midfielder—Known as the Masked Dove because she played with a broken nose while wearing a clear plastic face mask in the quarterfinals against Dominican two years ago. Tough as nails and takes great angles to win 50/50 balls. Great vision, always makes the right pass.


Aidan Carpenter, Forward—Both quick and fast with an arsenal of 1 v 1 moves, multi-dimensional player who creates instant offense with both goals and assists. Holds school record for 60-meter dash. Received athletic scholarship to play at Iona University in New York City (D1) next year. Team Captain.


Kay Kergosien, Midfield/Defender—Canon of a leg, scored the winning goal against Mandeville two years in a row, one from 40 yards out on a free kick. Smart, physical player who knows how to play aggressively without fouling. School Vice President. Team Captain.


Kim Karl, Forward—A true headhunter, scores with both her head and her feet. Nicknamed the Russian Rocket for her powerful shooting. Very physical and hard to knock down. Multisport athlete who also plays volleyball for SSA. Team Captain.


Macie Perrin, Midfielder—Excellent soccer IQ and the ultimate team player, has fought through knee surgery to stay with the program. Her never-give-up attitude should earn her the Heart of the Dove Award. The Perrin family already has two SSA D1 championship rings with daughter Zoe Perrin.


Kat Kern, Defender—Quick, physical, and tenacious defender. Excellent dribbling skills. Very aggressive on the pitch. Knows when to foul to prevent the opposition’s advantage. Will be playing college soccer at University of Mobile next year.


Bailey Vanas, Forward/Wing—Quick feet with an accurate shot and good first touch. Scored her first goal of the season within minutes of getting into the game. The Vanas family already has two SSA D1 championship rings with daughter Brooke Vanas.


Sophia Cuccia, Forward—Instinctual center forward with deceptive speed. Always a breakaway threat. Has scored in every season she has played. Best sense of humor on the team. I am told I am not allowed to reveal her nickname. Not even sure how to spell it.


I’ll review the Juniors next week, Sophomores/Freshman the week after.

Look who’s back on top this morning, and perfectly aligned to play Shreve in the playoffs. Need a PR wizard to tell Shreve exactly who to play (and not play) to keep things just like this.

As promised, here is a review of the Dove Juniors: 

Emily Lombas, Goalkeeper— Has an incredible backstory, and has overcome tremendous adversity to become the Dove’s starting keeper. Has impeccable timing on punch-out saves in the upper 90. Strong punt past midfield. The Lombas family already has three SSA D1 championship rings with daughter Sarah. Team captain.


Mia Encinia, Attacking Mid—Best ball handler in the state. Elite off the ball movement and passing vision. A true field general on the pitch. Plays with high intensity and high soccer IQ. The Encinia family already has two SSA D1 championship rings with daughter Aliha.


Lainey Connell, Midfield—Dominates midfield possession with an elite combination of physical play and excellent ball control. Has the discipline to make the simple pass to get the offensive attack started. Laser shot from the outside, scored the winning goal against St. Joe’s on a direct kick. Team Captain.


Anna Claire “AC” Schwing, Wing— Has a motor that doesn’t quit, always out-hustles everyone on the field. Combination of speed and desire to take players on 1 v 1 down the line. The Schwing family already has two SSA D1 championship rings with daughter Mary Lynn. Team Captain


Kendall Kessler, Defender—Fast, physical defender not afraid to challenge anyone. Takes great angles to cut off through-ball attacks. Strong defensive headers when challenging for air balls. Strong leg when making clears to get the defense out of a jam.


Emma Russo, Midfielder—Nicknamed The Enforcer, can generate yellow cards faster than a blackjack dealer cutting the deck at Harrah’s casino. Plays a very physical style, always has her teammate’s back. Saw significant action during the SJA game and played very well against top talent.


Shelby Kreiger, Defender--Physical and fearless, knows how to position herself to win possession against bigger forwards. Makes the simple pass to the midfield to get out of pressure in the backfield. High level of aggression intimidates opposition


Merrin Trahan, Defender— Tall, aggressive fullback with multi-year varsity experience. Wins 50/50 balls with a combination of shoulder charges and getting inside hip position. Not afraid to use her head to clear air balls. 


This team is about to hit 5th gear. And the Bugatti they are driving has a total of 7. 

I’ll highlight the Sophomores/Freshman next week.

The future of the Baby Doves looks very bright:

Sophomores:

Kailey Perilloux, Wing—Good straight line speed, can run the wing and makes crosses all day. Plays excellent defense when the offense loses possession. Understands the transition game and always covers both the offensive and defensive responsibilities. Has scored and assisted in every season she's played for the Doves.


Carlie Perrin, Fullback--Fast with a powerful outside shot, gets into the attack with well-timed overlaps out of the back. Can shut down opposing forwards with excellent 1 v 1 defense. Does a great job getting to the end line and making crosses. The Perrin family has 2 SSA state championship rings with daughter Zoe. 

Jessie Kergosien, Fullback--Nicknamed the Swiss Army Knife, all-around athlete who can play anywhere on the field including goalie. Plays mostly fullback, takes great angles to cut off passes. Shows a lot of fight in 50/50 ball situations.  

Eliana Candebat, Fullback--Highly aggressive defender who refuses to get bodied off of the ball. Excellent headers when clearing the ball. Has a high competitive drive, never gives up on a play. Makes accurate passes out of the back, does a good job of keeping the ball in bounds instead of yielding unnecessary throw ins.

Camille Duvernay, Forward--Speedy attacker with excellent footwork and a sneaky shot. Has the ability to score from outside. Good off the ball movement. 


Freshmen:

Libba Daniel, Goalkeeper--Tall, tough, athletic keeper with great instincts. Can make all the saves. Took over starting job when starting keeper went down and has had a big hand in SSA's undefeated D1 record. Great at attacking the ball on corner kicks, makes secondary and tertiary saves even on rebounds.

Reese Dantin, Forward--6 feet tall, fast, and aggressive. If she continues to develop her touch and footwork, has a potential to be a college player. Has several assists already this year as well as finding the back of the net as a freshman.

Ava Hegwood, Forward/Outside Back--Quick and agile, moves well both on and off the ball. Good first touch and dribbling skills. Poised to contribute to the attack next year when the Doves lose their two leading scorers. 


That's the scoop on the 2022-2023 Doves. Coach Kyle, Coach Laz, Coach Al, Coach Alexi, Coach Moss, and Coach Dual can study this data all they want, but the only ones who can beat the Doves are the Doves, and they're on their side.
