Oddest thing happened at a HS game.
A player was at the 50 to be subbed in at the next stoppage. That team earned a corner kick, the CR pointed to the player to call his sub off. The coach yelled out he decided he didn’t want to make the sub. The CR walked over and flashed a yellow card, which was assumed meant for the coach. Turns out the CR gave the yellow to the player for not coming on the field. It also should be noted that the AR had told the coach he didn’t have to do the sub if he didn’t want to.
What’s the explaination on this, or is there one?

By the rule, failure to enter or exit the field of play would result in a caution (also-coming onto the field wirhout being beckoned). But by the spirit of the game, the center was probably a bit overzealous in showing the yellow there.
Personally, if coach makes it known to me they don’t want to sub on a corner after I blow the whistle to beckon a player on, I’ll just blow to restart the game with the corner and move on. Don’t make a problem when there isn’t one.

It just seemed pretty harsh, considering 2 things, first the AR told the coach he didn’t have to sub and more importantly, the player is never going to defy his coach when told not to sub, so the player is just stuck between a rock and the hard place.

To me, if the AR gave the coach that information, we as the referee team can eat that one and not give the caution. Or if the AR lets the R know he passed that information, we could make it right by rescinding the yellow. Idk. There are bigger fish to fry.
