Game summary:
Dutchtown started red-hot out of the blocks, and had the ball on the St Amant half of the field for most of the first 10 minutes. Gators then played a long ball down field and won a corner. Ball skipped through off someones head and straight to Sebastian Torrado on the far post who slotted it home for a 1-0 Gator lead against the run of play. After that, St Amant gradually figured out what their defensive assignments were, and they were able to even things up over most of the rest of the half. Dutchtown pressed the attack, and St Amant kept #'s back, stayed patient, and played the ball downfield to Torrado. Half ended 1-0. Second half had Dutchtown pressing forward and St Amant dropping players back. Dutchtown had several decent chances but never seemed to get the quality shot off. St Amant continued to play the ball long and counter down the wings. Physical nature of the match started to take its toll midway through the second half as play got ragged and players on both teams started to cramp up. DHS also started to get a bit frustrated and tempers flaring led to 3 yellow cards for D-town. Gator defense held firm, and with 12 minutes to go, St Amant had basically pulled all players back inside its own half to bunker up and protect the 1 goal lead. St Amant GK Brice Noel made three superb saves down the stretch to preserve the lead. Despite D-town pounding away, it looked like the game would end 1-0, but Dutchtown finally got loose behind the Gator defense and scored with 2 SECONDS left in regulation. Place went nuts and Gators were stunned. Right after kickoff from the goal Jacob Aucoin went down after being kicked and the game ended 1-1. OT saw the Gators start trying to get more guys forward, and Dutchtown picked up the pace too. Remarkable that both teams were able to continue to play at such a high intensity level as both squads on the field were completely exhausted. Midway through the first OT Derreck Palermo chipped a perfect pass over the heads of two Dutchtown defenders to a streaking Sebastian Torrado, who then chipped a shot over an onrushing Griffin GK Mike Tymchak and into the net for a 2-1 lead with 5 to play. Gators again bunkered up, but this time they held, with Noel making two great saves, and Wesley St Pierre clearing a ball of the line at the very end off a corner to seal the deal.
Atmosphere was unbelievable--Dtown fans were vocal throughout, and The Pit Crazies were in full force too. Great job by both sets of fans. Coach Chambless and the folks at Dtown should be commended for the free student admission and the great job of putting on a big game. Refereeing was flawless and perfect for such a big game. Both teams played their guts out, and I couldnt be prouder of any player on the field for thier effort--Griffin or Gator. Coach Chambless and I were both exhausted after the match. Very exciting rivalry match that lived up to the hype--so great to see two teams just laying it all out there.
I am one proud coach tonight. A week ago, my boys had just lost to Woodlawn, and we looked dead in the water with a 2-5 district record, games against BRHS, Dutchtown and Catholic to finish the season, and needing a miracle to make the playoffs. Then, our seniors lifted our team up, and we found something. We won 2-1 in OT on Wednesday night, and the 2-1 in OT again tonight, and have secured 4th place in district 4 and a playoff berth. I cant begin to tell anyone how proud I am of the heart and determination these boys have shown down the stretch. That is what HS soccer is all about.
