I have heard some about the Y-League on this site, but I have some questions about it. Hopefully some of you guys will know them.
What exactly is the Y-League? Is it somehow related to ODP?
How do you play for them? Is there a tryout? Do you have to be recruited by their coaches or be recommended by your club coach?
What are the age groups? I thought I saw something on TV with semi-pro teams connected with the Y-League. Maybe that was a hallucination.
Where are they from and where do they play? I think I remember reading that Will Wilson was on it. So, that makes me tend to think that it is in the New Orleans area.
I thought this would be the right section of LAPrep to place this post. (Considering most High School players don't even play select.) But if it's not, move it.

Y-league is like a regional ODP team...sorta. Laferniere has a Y-league team and i believe you have to tryout for it. I believe its used by college and pro teams to scout talent.

They have a tryout sometime in April or May, and it's for just about every age in guys and a few ages in girls. Guys I believe is 14-18 or something like that. In terms of competitiveness, Y-league is def more competitive because it's like premier league play in terms of point system (English Premier League play). You have a region and you play everyone twice, home and away, and you get 3 pts for win, 1 tie and 0 loss- very simple. Winner of each region goes to nationals to compete in about a 12 team tourney for the championship. At nationals, coaches will pool together the best of each conference to create the ODP regional pool team. From there it's basically like ODP; you go out for weekend and play with a team and get evaluated. From my experience, Y-league is a great way to keep up with the game and improve while your club team is not playing. Also, it's probably easier to go deep into the ODP pools through being successful in Y-league play all summer than to just be evaluated for one weekend in Lafayette.

How do I contact the coach or let someone know that I am interested? If there is a web-site with more information, please let me know.
Thanks for the information.

Y league is the best youth league in the USA. It is an improvement over the ODP system although both are used to select possible Pro 40 and professional players.
Y league is a league with NO RESTRICTIONS! This gives the league the most competitive environment possible for a youth player. Clubs can recruit and play any person they want, as long as they are of the proper age. Many MLS teams have Y league teams that serve as their youth clubs. The Y league team in New Orleans is inferior to most of the other Y league teams, but this is probably due to the fact that there are not a lot of quality players in NOLA as compared to other cities. For example, Houston has more registered players than the entire state of Louisiana, so their Y league teams should be better than New Orleans or Lafayette teams. The Y league is how the USSF should find the talent for its national teams. The ODP system is too antiquated and should be eventually phased out in favor of the more competitive Y league system.

Geeves, Aside from calling Kenny Farrell, there's probably a Shell Shockers web site that would have information on tryouts and whatnot. If you don't find anything there, call Elizabeth Chugden. I'm not sure if she's the coordinator this year, but she probably knows about tryouts and ages and everything. Another person who may know about tryouts is Steve Romig. Get in touch with one of those 3 people or find something on the internet and just tell them who you play club for (unless you don't, which sets you at no major disadvantage) and that you want to tryout. All tryouts are open are probably going to be at La Salle fields or Lafreniere. I will most likely be playing Y-League this summer (depends on college) and hopefully I'll see you out there.
