HOUMA – Vandebilt Catholic, the top-ranked team and defending state champion in Division II, stood toe-to-toe with Jesuit, the top-ranked team in Division I, for 90 regulation minutes and two 5-minute overtime periods Wednesday night at Buddy Marcello Stadium.
But after 26 shot attempts, neither team could find a way to put the ball in the net as the game ended in a scoreless tie.
The Terriers (4-1-1) allowed the Blue Jays some early scoring opportunities and were outshot 6-2 in the first half.
But Vandebilt goalkeeper Ross Chauvin made three saves in the first half and received a huge assist from teammate Shane Henry.
Following a deflection off Chauvin, Henry found himself the lone defender between the ball and the net making a kick save that prevented a goal.
“That was the play of the game,” Vandebilt coach Doug Hamilton said. “Our defense really played an outstanding game. Shane Henry played really well throughout the game. The competition level in this game was outstanding, especially for such an early season game.”
The second half started with the Terriers’ offense maneuvering for a scoring chance.
At the kickoff Jonathan Menard passed to Taylor Pierron on the sideline, who then lobbed a crossing pass to a cutting Reid Amedee who was able to head the ball toward the direction of the net, but his shot sailed high.
The Terriers had another scoring chance late in the second half with a shot above the penalty box from Pierron that found its way through to Blue Jays goalkeeper George Rowley, who was able to deflect it with a diving effort.
“We are still trying to get our touch back with some guys coming on late from our football team,” Hamilton said. “But with the caliber of team like Jesuit It does not take them much to get ready to play.”
During the overtime periods, the Terriers outshot Jesuit, 3-1.
“This was just a really well-played match,” Hamilton said. “I know the score will probably indicate otherwise, but both teams played extremely well.”
Vandebilt will play host to another highly-ranked team from Division I Saturday when Brother Martin visits Buddy Marcello Stadium for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
