I know a Neville parent is truly offended by W. Monroe bashing. I hear that the Rebs hold their boys back in grade school so they'll be older for varsity football. Here in Alexandria we suffer the same problem of limited soccer competition, with one U-19 rec team for our girls to play on. They play tournaments or nearby rec association teams. We have had three girls go play select in Lafayette or Shreveport, but the travel problems are difficult. More interestingly is that several of our best players are softball players. Our top two scorers this year are both all-district softballers, one of whom signed with Southeastern to play for them. Some folks think you can only maximize your soccer talent if you're a one sport athlete, but why limit the kids to that?

Oh, by the way, here are the Enrollment figures for Ouachita parish high schools:
West Monore 82% White Sterlington 82.5% White West Ouachita 94% White Richwood 98.5% Black Ouachita Parish H.S. 56.80% White (looks like this is brand new school)
I expected some degree of segreation but was stunned by these figures when I got them from the Ouachita Parish School Board. I could not believe this system was not under any Federally suppervised order of desegregation.

Squarepeg, let's make sure I understand you. Because West Monroe does not have any large private schools as compared to say Lafayette ( St. Thomas More & Tuerlings) this somehow takes away from their athletic accomplishments. I don't know how you can blame a public school because it does not have private competition. The fact is the football program supports the smaller athletic programs ( like girls soccer ) to the point that these programs have some of the best facilites in the state. West Monroe's girls continue to progress and high school success will eventually translate into increased interest in the sport. This is a slow process but it has started as evidenced by West Monroe's victory over Acadiana High School this year and their 1-0 loss to Comeaux last week. So give them a break and talk about the progress they have made instead of rumors about children in grade school.

What I meant was that becuase the Ouachita School system is an empirically proven segregated one, there is no reason for parents to send thier children to private schools because West Monroe already provides the segregation they would otherwiise seek though "white flight". So West Monore keeps its athelets in public schools because it is part of a racist school system. How these percentages have managed to remain with out remediation is shocking to me. Without even looking at the numbers for Shreveport, I would predict most of the public schools are predominately black or closer to 50-50, so it would make sense that there would be more private schools like Evangel draining the atheletic pools. I think either West Monore has more of a midwestern demographic or the school system remains intentionally segregated. You tell me.

Let's keep the conversation on topic. If you want to talk about school segregation, take it to another board.
Soccer is the topic and the D I Bracket.
Keep it there.

I fully understand the frustration of coaches/players/parents, etc. in areas of North Louisiana where there are no local soccer programs to support the high shcool soccer programs. However, time will eventually remedy this situation. In the 80's and very early 90's, for 8 years, I coached the one and only U-19 girls team in Lafayette--and U-19 included everyone above U-14 age. We drove to Baton Rouge almost every weekend to play a game or two, and traveled to Jackson, Slidell, Beaumont, and Houston to play in tournaments. Now, there is a lot of local competition. Eventually, the same will develop in North Louisiana.

Squarepeg - did you see my handle - TigetDad? My children go to Neville - a Monroe City School - that has an enrollment of around 700 kids. Also check your stats on Monroe City Schools and you will see there is roughly 65% African American students. I was basically talking soccer and the fact that you have many options to utilize and we have few - nothing about the racial make-up of the systems. Also - West Monroe and their football - that is another line, subject, actually another website.

I'm not sure about INDY, but Burbank was no less than unplayable yesterday. The fields should be fairly saturated, although the sun seems to be slowly creeping out.
Hopefully St. Joe's/LHS won't look like a U5 mudfight.

Indy's drainage is better than Burbank and field 8 should be playable by 5:30. I see POSSIBLE mudfight to St. Joe's advantage for several reasons 1) it's their mud 2) a muddy field helps equalize the faster and stronger team (Lafayette). Should be a great game. As I hit post buttom the sun is making it's way out from the clouds.

Very hard game to predict. I am almost scared to predict any score with the amount of hate I will receive... Everyone has been saying that BRHS would lose in just about every game in the playoffs, as people will say again. Very close game ending 2-0 BRHS. Only a last minute goal by Sarah Benson that secures a BRHS win.
BRHS will have home-field advantage where they have not lost a single game. Check your inbox 'thewhitefob'! ;D

They have lights plus a pretty nice field while ours doesn't have lights, nor is it a good field. I am striping the field, I hope it doesn't look too bad.

Someone better make arrangements at Woodlawn to have the goals erected once again as they have been dismantled and moved off the field. If BRHS and MC are planning on a 6:00 kickoff on Friday it would be in every one's best interest to secure the missing goals or at least address the problem before it becomes one.
