Lady Mustangs advance to regionals

Karen Wissing scored twice to help Caddo Magnet in a 4-1 win over Ouachita in the first round of the Division I girls soccer playoffs at Independence Stadium on Thursday.
Dorrie Vaughan and Julia Vaughan each scored a goal in the first half to get the Lady Mustangs (13-6-1) off to a good start.
Caddo Magnet knew little of its first-round opponent, so it kept the strategy simple.
"You come out and hope you play well," Caddo Magnet head coach Jonathan Orta said. "Expect the unexpected too. Ouachita is a good team with a lot of good athletes."
Ouachita's Hannah Haddock scored with 7:13 remaining on a penalty kick to spoil the shutout.
To get his team ready for the opening round, Orta used some unconventional methods. The Lady Mustangs hit the basketball court one day.
The reason? Orta wanted to stress transition and how to move off the ball. Using a different sport to show its relation to soccer highlighted his point.
"We've been working on this all year," Orta said. "When you make high-percentage passes you tend to have possession of the ball longer.
"We played well, but we could have played better."
Orta said his team got some perspective after losing a couple of games to teams it beat last year.
Caddo Magnet faces the winner of the Baton Rouge-Acadiana game. Baton Rouge, the District 4 champion, finished the season ranked No. 7 in the Division I poll. Acadiana finished No. 11.
"The whole goal was to win state," Orta said. "The girls don't get caught up in the hype. We've got to come out and play hard."

Loyola has no problem beating Haughton

Despite not playing in more than two weeks, the Loyola girls soccer team showed no signs of rust against Haughton in its Division II first-round playoff game.
The Lady Flyers bombarded the Lady Bucs, 7-0, at Independence Stadium on Thursday. Jessie Cassidy and Erin Moeller each scored two goals; Sarah Gilster, Lauren Cheaney and Jordan Smith added a goal apiece.
The last game Loyola (11-4-1) played until Thursday's game with Haughton was against Captain Shreve. Its final regular season game with Tyler (Texas) Lee was cancelled.
The Lady Flyers will meet Parkway, which beat Leesville 4-0 on Thursday, in the regionals.
Head coach Trey Woodham and his team saw Thursday's game as a tuneup for the remainder of the postseason.
"The girls were complaining about getting some playing time," Woodham said. "The Parkway game will be a lot tighter than this one.
"From now on, it's game to game. We don't look any further than that. They all want Parkway. The finals are the furthest thing on our mind."
For Haughton (4-7), it was a tough game going against one of the best Division II teams in the state.
Haughton head coach Dave Milner was proud of his team and its effort. The Lady Bucs held a team meeting the night before the game and talked about what they wanted to accomplish.
"The team really believed they could win," Milner said. "We held them for 20 minutes before they scored. For us, that was a win.
"I'm proud of their heart. We don't match well with anybody. When I look back at the end of the season, I'll look at the 20 minutes of the first half, the 20 minutes of the second half and their heart."
Loyola moves onto the regionals and its rematch with Parkway. The Lady Panthers beat the Lady Flyers, 3-0, on Dec. 28.
Although the playoff game was their second game in more than two weeks, Woodham thinks his team is hitting its peak at the right time.
"Each level we advance, it's going to be tougher -- that's the nature of the beast," Woodham said. "They understand what they're up against.
"We've started to climb against Shreve. That was our best game of the year."

Parkway overpowers Leesville

Parkway head coach Tere Alexander had some simple advice for the Lady Panthers leading up to their Division II first-round playoff game against Leesville.
"I told them, 'Don't go to play a soccer game; go to win a soccer game,'" Alexander said.
Her players followed her words, beating Leesville 4-0 at Parkway on Thursday. The Lady Panthers (16-5) will meet Loyola in the regionals.
Parkway went back to the basics in its preparation for Leesville. Its offensive pressure in recent games has been suffocating, peppering opponents with shots.
But, it's not how many shots you get on net, it's how many go in and Parkway was coming up short in that respect.
Parkway had 43 shots against Bossier earlier this season, but scored three goals. It had more than 100 shots in the three games prior to the playoff game, yet had nine goals to show for it.
So, Alexander had the team focus on the mechanics and it worked.
Jamie Lugo led the Lady Panthers with a pair of goals while Allison Smith and Olivia Ditt each had a goal.
"Jamie was on," Alexander said. "She's been playing hard lately. She's been taking shots and not finding the net. She was finding the net (Thursday).
"The shots were so much better (Thursday)."
The Lady Panthers haven't played consistent over the season despite their winning record.
"I hope we're on the upswing," Alexander said.
