The Shreveport Times love affair with Loyola continues. Loyola the 4th or 5th best team in Shreveport/Bossier once again has the most girls named to the all city team. Whoever covers soccer for the Times doesn't know much about the girls game. This is the same guy that had Loyola as the top team in the city at the beginning of the year after they lost on of their best senior classes the year before. Just because you have a good team one year doesn't mean you will have a good team the next. This is also the same guy that was not even at the the 1st Byrd/Magnet game which were the two best teams in the city.
Not taking anything away from the Loyola girls but the Times need to pick the best girls not just because they were on the team last year. It happens year in and year out, once you get on the team you are on the team next year. Three or four years ago a girl that made all city her junior year was placed on the team her senior year. The girl did not have a good senior season and didn't make 1st team, 2nd team or HM all district but she made the all city team.
The Times you need to do things right or just don't even do it at all.

I'm doing this from memory so please excuse me if I make a mistake.
Coach of the year: Lisa Leverman (Byrd)
Players:
Julia Vaughan, Caddo Magnet (12) (M) Player of the Year Kate Querbes, Byrd (11) (F) Katie Drummond, Byrd (9) (F) Abbie Cowley, Captain Shreve (9) (F) Jessica Cassidy, Loyola (12) (M) Amy Norgard, Captain Shreve (12) (M) Amanda Krebs, Loyola (12) (D) Jana Post, Byrd (10) (D) Lauren Cheaney, Loyola (11) (D) Dorrie Vaughan, Caddo Magnet (10) (D) Elizabeth Sooby, Loyola (12) (GK)
Disagree with the statement that Loyola is the 4th or 5th best team in the area. I don't think they played Byrd this year and their match vs Magnet was a 4-3 or 3-2 thriller. Byrd, Magnet and Loyola were all about even in my eyes this year. Those 4 girls carried the Loyola team this year and all deserve to be on the team. I wish they had named a second team. Not sure why they didn't.

Thanks, Dad. I agree with you....it's strange that a second team was not chosen. It would have given observers a better idea of the pool that was the basis for how the 1st team was selected from plus it could have provided reconigtion for more of the girls in your area.

ShreveDad I somewhat agree. Those girls did carry that team. But I feel Byrd and Magnet are clearly the top two teams. Then comes Shreve, Parkway, and Loyola depending on which team showed up. Loyola lost 3-0 to Ruston in January which is not very impressive.
It has been stated on the boys board that the top teams generally get most of the selections. Byrd gets 3, Magnet 2, and Shreve 2. Loyola gets 4 that just doesn't make sense.
I think they should have picked a few more because there were some deserving girls that are just as good as the ones selected but didn't have the stats. I know in the case of the Byrd team we had at least three girls with over 8 goals each that only played in blow out games. Several of the starters were pulled in the easy games and didn't get a chance to pad their stats. I know several of the other schools didn't have enough quality players and therefore their starters played longer and were able to help their stats. There is nothing you can do about that.

Sportfan, being a Loyola player, I must correct you by saying we didn't lose to Ruston. In fact, we beat them 5-0, and 6-0. We lost to Parkway 3-0, but beat them 1-0 in regionals.

Also Jana Post is only a sophomore not a junior.

I think we need to clarify how the All City Team was picked. Each coach nominated his/her players to be put on the ballot. The Times reporter then compiled the nominations and sent the coaches the ballot. The coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. They voted for 6 offensive players, 4 defensive players and a keeper. The votes were then sent back to the Times reporter who tallied the votes.
Nobody can blame Brian at the Times. All he did was count the votes. The coaches picked the team.
My only criticism is they should have named a second team for both the boys and the girls. This is the first year I can remember where they did not have a second team as well as an Honorable Mention list.
