FYI.... Dear Coaches, We are facing a referee shortage due to Katrina. Our refs are scattered everywhere. If you need a ref crew, you better call as soon as you find out your date, time and venue.

Gee whiz coaches, I gave you a heads up about the referee shortage. Now we've got ref crews having to cover two games in one day. Don't get all blown out of shape if that ref crew doing their second job ain't up to what you think they should be.

There are plenty refs around to do playoff games. There may not be many available because of the early times games are being played. The refs must take off work a half a day or more to be able to travel to other districts to cover a game. Not every one has the ability to take off from work. Please remember this when you see a ref at a playoff game during the week because some of them may be taking vacation time or comp time to be able to officiate at these away games. Tell them thanks for coming to your game. The pay that they get doesn't make up for the lost time at work.
"Now we've got ref crews having to cover two games in one day. Don't get all blown out of shape if that ref crew doing their second job ain't up to what you think they should be. " I don't see a problem with doing two games. The refs normally do two games a night anyway, the boys game and then the girls game or varsity and jy game. The center ref of one game will take the AR position in the second game.

Refs doing two games in one day are having to travel from one venue to another. Not an easy task nor very fun. New Orleans has a ref shortage. Many good ref crews are no longer available for games due to Katrina. They are no longer around or unavailable due to work... so yes, there is a shortage in South La.

BTW, when it comes to playoffs, referee crews prefer to ref only one game per day. We want to give the teams 100%. The teams deserve no less. This can't be accomplished if we have to do two games a day.

Yeah, but in a 4 ref crew, one ref has nothing to do. So he could do the center in the second game

Baton Rouge officials officiated 21 games in 3 days and turned away 4 games.

The 4th does nothing? Funny. Baton Rouge refs officiated 21 games in three days and turned away 4 games.

I would prefer a crew that is fresh. At least one of the AR's will be doing a second line of the day and if the first game was played at a very high speed. They may not be in position to make an accurate judgment on a critical call. Don't know how many Ref's read, but THANK YOU THANK YOU for your dedication to the game.

They may not be in position to make an accurate judgment on a critical call. But remember the refs are always closer to the play than the fans in the stands and have a better position

That covers a lot of area. Ok, let's get specific. Which city is your high school ref association located?

Wow! Have you seen the uniforms worn by the referees in Italy?
Will they be worn at the World Cup this summer?

To comment on the 4t official doing nothing. That 4th official is in charge of substitutions. It is a rule in LHSAA that there are 4 officials for each match. If I'm not mistaken, 4 officials are the norm in all levels of soccer above high school. I am not an official but I do admit that it is a thankless job and is a very difficult job. There are some that do great jobs and then there are some who arren't that great. It's just like reporting or coaching, if you think it's so easy and you can do a better job go for it.

I would like to start refereeing but can i do it from the stands, i find that it is alot less work and you dont have to know all the rules to do it. Also i think you can see better from up there. There are lots of people who already ref from the stands. I'm sure they won't be bothered to have another join them. Good luck and have a great season.

Yes, the 4th official is in charge of substituitions. If you ever watch a 4th official during an intense match, you will find him/her doing lots more than substitutions. 4th officials are also responsible for bench control (ever try to calm down an irate coach?), keeping records and for helping with fouls on the field. 8 eyes are always better than 6.

The 4th ref also is there in case one of the other refs is injured. The game can continue with 3 refs.
