Caddo Magnet 3 Airline 1
This was an entertaining game to watch...the play was pretty frantic as it seemed both teams were a little nervous for the first district game. Magnet was looking for a little revenge after losing twice to Airline last year. Magnet probably had 6 corners in the first 15 minutes of the game and just could not get on the end of one. They finally got on the board when Ann Schaumburg finished a cross on the back side of the goal. The half ended 1-0. Magnet scored early in the second half on an identical play to the first goal as Celeste Goudeau had the final touch on the back post. Airline scored on a corner kick that bounced around in the box before being touched into the corner of the net. The intensity picked up considerably once Airline got on the board and the officials really let them get away with whatever they wanted to do. There were several times I couldn't believe no calls were made for either team. Magnet finished the scoring with Erin Brunson beating the keeper to the corner after a nice dribbling run from Carmen Ortiz.
Magnet really controlled the wings and took advantage of their speed to create several opportunities in front of goal. The finishing was off tonight but that will come with time. Overall good game from both teams, Magnet will be tough this year if they can keep their composure and not try to outrun everyone.

Byrd 6 Shreve 1
Byrd dominated Shreve last night in the district opener. Byrd had too much speed for the Gators. Byrd and Magnet look to be the teams to beat in District 1 this year.

A win is a win. There is no doubt about it, and congrats to Byrd for taking full advantage of the circumstances. However, there were some significant players missing from the Magnet side. The next time that they play should be quite interesting.
I could easily see this thing coming down to tie breakers when all is said and done.

That I know of, Magnet was missing 4 senior starters and a Junior starter, five of their best seven or eight players

Since most of the girls missing were on a trip that has been planned for months, I'm surprised Magnet chose to play such a big match now. They should have scheduled the match sometime later in the season. Big break for Byrd and they made the most of it.

Magnet was missing 7 players total...4 defenders and 3 starting mids. Byrd's coach was unwilling to move the game since she knew Magnet would be missing players. Magnet's coaches tried to reschedule several times and she would not accept any alternate dates. I expect Magnet's possession game to be much better next time around with the 3 mids back in there. Byrd deserved to win the game, they won most 50/50 balls and played very physical as usual. Magnet played the game with a freshman sweeper and 2 sophmore marking backs...they will be much more organized once their senior captain is back keeping them organized. Congrats to Byrd on the win but I expect a different outcome come later in the season.

Shreve has the same problem the end of January when several of our juniors will be away on a school trip. I want to publicly thank the Byrd, Natchitoches Central and Caddo Magnet coaching staffs for working with us to reschedule a game during that period.

It is my understanding that the game between BYRD and Magnet was originally scheduled for January 18th but was rescheduled (to accommodate Magnet) by the two head coaches for November 20th. This rescheduling left BYRD with an "off" week, but in an attempt to "work with other coaches" that is what was done. The alternate dates (to my knowledge) that were presented to BYRD conflicted with BYRD's schedule and the very late notice of this problem did not allow BYRD enough time to work out a change with another team. BYRD travels the weekend after Christmas to an out of town tournament. Adding a game to the holidays would further complicate "family time". While the circumstances were not the best, according to Magnet, maybe more thought should have been taken at the initial rescheduling instead of faulting the BYRD coach publicly on this forum.

I know its just me but why isn't NC in the schedule up top.? Aren't they undefeated? As mentioned in the boys forum, I haven't been around in a while.

No excuses this time...it was a good game and we had all our players (minus our 2 senior captains lost to knee surgery). I thought both teams played with a lot of heart and nobody deserved to lose. As I stated in my previous post, I thought Magnet would play a better game and they did. They possessed the ball more than in the first game and created more chances. Byrd's defense is strong and limited Magnet's chances but Magnet missed 3 or 4 opportunities from about 10 yds away. Coulda, woulda, shoulda...obviously these teams are pretty evenly matched and Bryd won because they found a way to put 1 in the back of the net. I thought Magnet played most of the 2nd half in Byrd's end of the field but it didn't result in the goal they needed. I think both of these teams have a good chance of advancing far in the playoffs. Congrats to Byrd on winning district...Magnet will learn from this and be ready come playoff time.

Times had a nice short article on Byrd/Magnet boys game, nothing on Byrd/Magnet girls game which probably already determined district championship. Nothing on Shreve/Magnet boys game that was huge as far as local soccer is concerned. I don't know what the answer is, I guess the Times people would rather stay inside in the warmth of the basketball gym rather than brave the cold of the soccer games.

just to update... District OVerall Byrd 6-0 10-1 NCHS 5-1 7-1 Caddo 3-2 10-2 Airline 2-2 7-5-1 C. S. 2-3 5-7-4 Southwood 0-4 2-4-1 Huntington 0-6 0-6
Remaining games of note
12/20 Magnet v. Shreve 1/4 Shreve v. Airline 1/6 Shreve v. Byrd 1/8 Magnet v. Shreve 1/9 NCHS v. Shreve 1/15 NCHS v. Magnet 1/29 NCHS v. Byrd
Byrd has the title locked up unless shreve or NCHS can beat them. They don't have any other tough games ahead. Hopefully, NCHS can run the table and beat byrd on the last day of the season to win district. Shreve's season comes down to a four day stretch of three games. Airline and Caddo will have to fight for position. Southwood and Huntington pose no threat.

Just to update the above schedule, the game on 1/8 will be Magnet and NCHS...the 12/20 game between Magnet and Shreve is their 2nd district game between them. Byrd should have the district title locked up, the two Magnet and NCHS games will determine 2nd.
