First off, I'd like to introduce myself. I am in Louisiana on vacation and I live in Washington DC. I have been a referee (to include HS/NISOA) for over 10 years and have played for most of my life. I, like several of you, attended the Lafayette/Terrebonne game. This is what I saw:
I got there just after the Terrebonne goal was called back for offside, so I won't give an opinion on that. Based on what others told me (including a video I viewed at halftime) this was the correct call.
The referee correctly cautioned a Terrebonne player for committing unsporting behavior (tactical foul). He also diffused a situation with a Terrebonne player on the ground and a Lafayette player who accidentally stepped on her. This action was not intentional and he did the right thing by not cautioning/disqualifying the Lafayette player.
The referee did not give NFHS signals, except for emphasis (pushing). He also did not disqualify (red card) the Terrebonne player for a textbook DOGSO-F for the foul on the breakaway; I expected him to go straight to his back pocket. He was a little inconsistent at times, but who isn't? Overall, he performed adequately, although I would have liked to have seen a few more fouls called.
The incident with the Lafayette player on the strip of track...it was unfortunate and definitely not intentional. She swung at the ball and lost her balance. The Terrebonne player's momentum might have carried her into that strip, the Lafayette player's head did hit hard. There is a deeper issue with this....that strip of track needs to be covered or the field needs to be shifted at least 3 yards towards the visitors bleachers. It's extremely dangerous and most, if not all, of the throw-ins were from that strip (for those of you not familiar with Terrebonne, it probably runs 70 yards and is about 1 yd from the sideline).
Terrebonne played alot of longball, and that just didn't cut it. Lafayette fairly won the game.
Before any of you start flaming, I'll have you know I played for Terrebonne when we played at Southdown.
