ByrsSoccerParent, the point is not about some sort about bias against your district. A comment was made about poor behavior by some "fans." Regrettably, that is a growing issue in high school soccer. ANYTIME the officials have to stop a game to allow a sheriff deputy to bring order to the stands, there is a problem. There is a huge difference between shouting agreement/disapproval of a ref's calls and shouting obscenities at teenage girls. A line was crossed. Anyone who was at the game and heard knows just how clearly that line was crossed.
It is unfortunate that a very small number of young individuals acted in crude manner. It is deplorable that some seek to minimize it. I am very confident that the Byrd coach and principle do not share this view. I would wager that the message in the next assembly is not "be nice" or "positive attributes of the game" but will be "only act in a manner that will bring credit to yourself and school."
Since the board gestapo censored this topic on the D1 Playoff Bracket thread, I followed ShreveDad's advice and moved the discussion here to address the aforementioned post:
You're absolutely right. The point is not about any bias against Dist. 1. The point is that nobody should make generalizations about an entire group of people on the basis of the actions of a few--Especially when it has not been determined with whom the few in question are affiliated.
I don't know who you think is trying to minimize any unsavory behavior. I was sitting behind the two groups of fans, incidentally near the Byrd principal and assistant principals. I did not hear any of the comments about which you complain, nor did I make any such comments. Unlike you, I do not presume to speak for everyone. However, I doubt seriously that the Byrd administration heard any such comments. I know these men and I can assure you that such behavior would be sternly dealt with. In fact, I did not hear what the commotion on the field was about until I was leaving the field after the game was over. What I DID hear was constant berating of the referee, continuous questioning of calls, etc. by a couple of the Dutchtown fans.
Should we all assume that all the Dutchtown fans are that way? By the same token, should we all draw negative impressions about the Dutchtown players because two of them got yellow cards? Absolutely not. That would be ridiculous, wouldn't it?
Having been the traveling team, I have great respect for the Dutchtown parents and fans who took off work and traveled to Shreveport to support their team. They are to be commended--rowdy or not. Likewise, the Dutchtown girls played a clean game and represented themselves well. But, they are teenage girls who don't always exercise the best control of themselves in emotional situations. They are also to be commended--yellow cards or not!
The "behavior of some fans" may be a growing issue in soccer where you live, but in the three years I have been watching the Byrd girls soccer team play, this is the only time where deputies had to be called for anything. My response to the original comment about Byrd fans was simply to get the point across that readers of the post should not jump to rash characterizations about "Byrd fans" based on the actions of a few. Nor should they infer that anyone was attempting to minimize the bad behavior as you would have them believe.
Finally, I don't know what you are talking about with the wager and next assembly business, but my suggestion that we be nice and focus on the positive points of the game was kind of in keeping with the stated purpose of this board: To promote girls soccer. Sorry if you missed that.
